Cal women's swim and dive hopes to reclaim Pac-12 crown for 1st time in 6 years

Over the next few days, every swimmer on the team has the same intention: topple some trees and break Stanford's chance at completing a five-year conference-winning streak.

The Bears have not had the bragging rights of being Pac-12 champions since 2015, and while in sports there are never sure things, Cal's dominant performance over Stanford, who has won the conference every year since 2017, as well as wins against elite programs in USC and UCLA, means the blue and gold may have something special brewing.

It appears that this season, the odds may be in Cal's favor to chop down those tall trees, which have been at the top for far too long, and to finally bring the trophy home.

Elliott Carr covers women's swim and dive.

Of course exhibition swim will not qualify for points but would it qualify for NCAA if A or B marks are met?

Great first evening with two 1st place finishes! One thing that I cannot figure out is why Izzy Ivey was on the Cal B 800 free relay team. She swam faster than any of the four swimmers on the A team and posted the 4th fastest time in the nation for the 200 free. HC McKeever must have a reason for this strategy. Can Ivey be substituted in the NCAA meet for one of the other swimmers? Cal has the second fastest clocking in the country and is one second + behind Virginia (I think). I hope that Izzy will be able to anchor the 200m free relay tomorrow night. She had better not be too tired...

Isabel Ivy had the fastest 200 leg swum with the B team. She would probably gave the Bears the best chance to win this event in the Championships. Since she is limited to 4 relays would the 800 remain the leg she will sit out?

Izzy could swim all 5 relays but she would only swim in two individual events. My guess is she skips the 800 Free Relay, and swims 100 Free, 200 IM and 100 Back at NCAAs, as well as the four "sprint" relays.

4 in A-Final of the 500. Robin Neumann leads the Bears with a second seed (4:39.92), followed by sophomores Ayla Spitz (3rd, 4:40.28), Rachel Klinker (5th, 4:43.86) and Sarah DiMeco (6th, 4:44.63). Freshman Mara Allen swimming in the C-Final (19th, 4:55.84).

Furds make up other 4 A-Final slots.

Two Bears in each finals heat for tonight. Alicia Wilson leads prelims with a 1:55.97, followed by freshman Isabelle Stadden (3rd, 1:57.99).

Ema Rajic (9th, 1:59.38) and Alexa Skorus-Neely (15th, 2:01.72) will swim in the B-final, while Tea Laughlin (17th, 2:02.36) and Natalie Tuck (18th, 2:02.53) lead the C-Final.

Great analysis there!

Even tho Izzy has skipped the 200 IM today (apparently in favour of either the 50 Free later in this session or her "usual" tough 100 Fly-Back double tomorrow?), it would make sense from a scoring potential perspective for Teri to slot Ivey into that aforementioned 200 IM / 100 Back / 100 Free schedule come NCAAs.

My feeling is that although Izzy may well tackle the other shorter 4 relays @ Nationals (like what she's doing here @ the Conference Championships), it may be arguably more advantageous to Bears for Ivey to contribute to the 800 FR at the big dance (to position Cal to credibly challenge a very potent Virginia relay), especially if Elise Garcia can come up with the same degree of improvements in her sprint fly as she has demonstrated in her sprint free splits this season...

Really psyched to see Ayla & Rachel's progress in the mid-distance frees, seeing that their primary chops lie in the backstroke & fly area respectively!

Bears haven't traditionally been known for their depth in the distance free events in the past, so this is quite an exciting development.

The pair having already shown their value to that winning 800 Free relay last night, which didn't even need Cal's fastest 200 Freestyler's contribution (Izzy) to touch the wall over 2 & a half seconds ahead of the Furdette runner-up team.

Is Emily Gantriis ok? She was the top seed yet finished in 17th place for 50m free qualifiers this morning. Normally, the freshman beats her two Cal rivals [E Riley & E Garcia] who were this morning's top two qualifiers.

Izzy exhibitioned her 50 Free, coming in with a time of 22.08 which would have been the top seed (Eloise leads the field with a 22.09).

Not being able to watch this morning's heats, Emily's time does present a bit of a mystery. Her front half was fine, in fact it was the 2nd fastest of the entire field (just 0.03 sec off Claire Glover's 10.70), but her back split of 12.09 was almost a sec slower than her usual...indeed 30 or so non-exhibitioned swimmersactually went faster than her in that final lap!

Hopefully Gantriis' performance here was just an uncharacteristic mis-step from a freshie and not in any fashion injury-related, as she should have an opportunity to redeem herself timewise in the C final, as well as in the 200 Free relay tonight...

It sounds like Emily may have missed her turn, if there is a large difference between her splits. There was this issue last week at SECs with another top sprinter, so I think there just needs to be some fine tuning.

Please feel free to correct any erroneous assumptions on my part here lol, but I do believe that exhibitioned swims @ the Pac-12 Championships are considered legit for NCAA qualifications purposes, as are time trials held during the competition.

Forgot to mention in the above post that the relay which Izzy could consider dropping @ NCAAs in favour of the 800 FR may potentially be the 200 MR, if someone can really step up big time to take on the sprint fly leg (i.e. Elise or perhaps even Rachel).

STANFORD SLOTTED TO OUT-PACE CAL ON DAY 2 FINALS OF PAC-12 CHAMPS, UCLA TO RISE

While the Cal Golden Bears have been dominant this season in the Pac-12, they haven't yet made a big move at these Pac-12 Championships.

Instead, Cal and Stanford had virtually the same outings this morning, with Stanford putting up one more swimmer into an A-final than Cal, Cal getting one more B-finalist than Stanford, and the teams tying with four C-finalists apiece. That mirrors how the teams looked on the 1-meter last night; each had one diver in the A-, B- and C-finals.

After Arizona out-scored Stanford by ~20 and Cal by ~30 on the 1-meter, Stanford and Cal should both barrel past the Wildcats tonight. Cal and Stanford make up the entirety of the 500 free A-final tonight, with Stanford's Brooke Forde (4:39.86) and Cal's Robin Neumann (4:39.92) both cracking the 4:40 barrier, while Cal has top seeds Alicia Wilson (1:55.97) and Eloise Riley (22.09) in the 200 IM and 50 free, respectively.

With the swimmers in strong positions, Stanford and Cal need to worry about placements in each final; if you're the top seed of a final, and you wind up dropping down to eighth, that's bad news in terms of projection-to-reality scoring.

DAY 1 SCORES
Arizona - 179
Cal - 172
Utah - 167
Stanford - 165
UCLA - 148

I believe at one of the dual meets several weeks ago, Emily Gantriis had actually swam fly on a 200 MR leg, with Elise anchoring. Could use either Eloise Riley or Elise on the anchor.

Another alternative would be to leave Izzy off the 400 MR. Rachel had actually swam a 51 fly leg on the 400 medley B relay at Pac-12s last year, and Elise was 52.2 last night on the B relay. All 3 are entered in the 100 fly tomorrow, but Rachel also has the 200 free.

Yes, Teri will thankfully have a wee bit of wriggle room & options, depending on how everyone performs these next few sessions in addition to their in-season accomplishments...

Cal results so far:

500 free: 3-4-6-7 from Ayla (4:38.05), Robin, Sarah, and Rachel, with freshman Mara winning the C-final. Forde and Tankersley take 1-2 in the A-final.

200 IM: 1-2 punch from Alicia and Isa! Ema takes second in B-final (amongst other Bears in the B and C heats).

50 freestyle had a three-way tie for second place (Eloise) and two-way ties for fifth and seventh places (Elise). What a crazy A-final, with a Washington State swimmer taking home the gold there to beat out LSJU, Cal, and USC swimmers amongst all.

Notably, Emma Wheal (LSJU) would have won the event with her B-final time, 22.12 over Washington State's Chloe Larson (22.18). Emily, winning the C-final in 22.23, would also have scored high in the championship final.

LSJU leading the rankings by about 50 points tonight, before the relay. I know Teri's focus is on the big dance, but hope the Bears continue to have strong morning and night swims to bring home a title from PAC-12s this year!

Day 3 Prelims (will be updating as more results come in)

400 IM: Our two entrants are both in the A-final, as Alicia Wilson takes 2nd in prelims with a 4:09.21. Sarah DiMeco in 5th (4:13.32).

100 Fly: 2 Bears in the A-Final, led by Izzy (2nd, 51.92) with Rachel Klinker not far behind (3rd, 51.95). Elise Garcia (9th, 52.84) and Ali Harrison will swim the B-Final (13th, 53.72) with Elizabeth Bailey in the C-Final (24th, 55.58)

200 Free: Robin takes the top seed (1:43.88) and leads 4 Bears into the A-Final. Right behind her are Ayla (3rd, 1:45.40), Eloise Riley (6th, 1:47.00) and Emily Gantriis (8th, 1:47.23). Mara Allen is in the B-final (14th, 1:50.15)

100 Breast: Ema sets a new school record (58.57) en route to the second seed in finals! Ali follows up her 100 fly with a 6th place seed for tonight (1:00.49). C-Finals also have 3 Bears in Natalie Tuck (17th, 1:03.49), Emma Davidson (22nd, 1:04.24), and Alexa Skorus-Neely (23rd, 1:04.52).

100 Back: Three A-Finalists led by Isabelle Stadden (51.55), with Izzy right behind (52.15). Tea Laughlin sneaks into the A-Final with a 53.47, good enough for 8th. Isabella Riley (20th, 55.85) and Elizabeth Bailey (22nd, 56.61) are in the C-Final.

Stats for this morning: Cal is 13/3/6 in A/B/C final swims. Stanford is 12/4/0 (if my math is correct, will wait on SwimSwam to verify numbers...)

2021 PAC-12 WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 3 UPS/MIDS/DOWNS

With Stanford leading by just over 40 points after yesterday, Cal has the edge in individual pool events.

Stanford had a big showing with 4 up in the 400 IM, but Cal has 4 up in the 200 free, while they also had a big showing in the 100 back. Overall, Cal has one more A-finalist than Stanford, while Stanford has one more B-finalist. In the C-finals, Cal has six swimmers, while Stanford has none; those C-finals will see Cal swimmers trying to move up on seeds and score towards the top of the final to swing this meet back into Cal's favor.

SCORED PRELIMS (excluding today's diving)
Cal - 417
Stanford - 370
UCLA - 300.5
Arizona - 226
USC - 205.5
Utah - 164
Washington State - 117

DAY 2 + SCORED PRELIMS (excluding today's diving)
Cal - 979.5
Stanford - 962
UCLA - 689.5
USC - 619
Arizona - 588
Utah - 533
Washington State - 306

Andrew Mering (Editor) :
"As weird as it sounds, Stanford will likely be leading at the end of the night. The above analysis doesn't include platform diving as the prelims there won't be done for a while. Stanford have divers that went 1-2 in that event last year on their team, so they will probably pick up the 17 points that Cal are currently leading them by in the current projection."

2021 PAC-12 WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 3 FINALS LIVE RECAP

This morning, a stacked trio of swimmers in the 400 IM went sub-4:10, including top seed USC junior Isa Odgers, yesterday's short IM winner Cal junior Alicia Wilson, and defending Pac-12 champion Stanford senior Brooke Forde. A total of four Stanford Cardinals will be in the top 400 IM final.

The 100 fly and 100 back finals will feature Cal junior Izzy Ivey. In the fly, USC senior Jemma Schlicht is seeded ahead of Ivey. Meanwhile in the 100 back, defending champ Ivey is also seeded second to freshman teammate Isabelle Stadden. Could Ivey top the 100 fly, defend her 100 back title, or top both?

Sandwiched between Ivey's swims will be the 200 free and the 100 breast. Answering to Stanford's 4 A-finalists in the 400 IM, Cal qualified four Bears into the 200 free A-final, led by senior Robin Neumann and senior Forde. Yes, Forde will swim the 400 IM/200 free double tonight. In the 100 breast final, USC freshman Kaitlyn Dobler will shoot for her first Pac-12 title, joined by Cal junior Ema Rajic and defending Pac-12 champion Stanford junior Allie Raab.
