The house is a mess and couldn't pass gas after eating a plate of beans.

Putin, who the GOP supports due to his "friendship" with Trump, has created a humanitarian disaster in Ukraine. The EU still has some resolve but we've abdicated our leadership role internationally due to GOP obstruction. The anti-American pro-Russian shills love it.

It wasn't long ago that the Putinistas were crowing about Poland abandoning Ukraine. Now Tusk is dunking on GOP senators for blocking aid (although at this point it's the house that stands in the way).

In other news, the Zalzhny situation just gets weirder.

Mikhail Gorbachev disagrees with you about promising not to move NATO eastward.
You're going to drop that bomb without a link to support it?

Jeffrey Sachs -- who was there, as part of the U.S. delegation -- said that the "Not One Inch Eastward" was the underlying premise for the entire negotiation. Otherwise, the former Soviet republics, like Ukraine, would not have given up their nuclear missiles.

Besides, Gorbachev was 91 when he died in 2022. Did he get railroaded in an interview? Was he still competent?

Sure, there have been NeoCon revisionists who've tried to deny reality, and claim that U.S./NATO leaders didn't really promise anything.... Obvious B.S.: "De-bunking Russian disinformation on NATO"

But through the magic of FOIA requests, many previously classified notes have been declassified, and they reveal exactly what Jeffrey Sachs and many others have been saying for years -- that everyone's understanding was Not. One. Inch. Eastward.

NATO Expansion: What Gorbachev Heard

Gorbachev continued that "The agreement on a final settlement with Germany said that no new military structures would be created in the eastern part of the country; no additional troops would be deployed; no weapons of mass destruction would be placed there. It has been obeyed all these years." To be sure, the former Soviet president criticized NATO enlargement and called it a violation of the spirit of the assurances given Moscow in 1990, but he made clear there was no promise regarding broader enlargement.
Of course, dumbo9 knows I posted the actual transcript of the talks between Baker and Gorbachev, which trumps anything posted by the leftwing Brookings Institution, but he doesn't want to talk about that. Still, I wonder how all those U.S. weapons got there since 2022. Must have been magic.

But then, Putin never promised the United States that it would never invade Ukraine, so it's OK.

Putin, in rambling interview, barely lets Tucker Carlson get a word in
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/02/08/tucker-carlson-putin-interview-released/

"Russian President Vladimir Putin spent the first 30 minutes of his two-hour-long interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson giving a revisionist historical tirade on the founding myths of Russia and Ukraine, the breakup of the Soviet Union and NATO expansionism.

…. By the end of the conversation, it was clear that Putin had no intention of ending his brutal war against Ukraine. But Carlson, who was sacked from Fox last year, seemed ready to surrender. Putin offered to keep talking. Carlson, evidently exhausted by the Russian leader's long-winded conspiracy theories and grievances against the West, thanked him and called it quits far short of the media coup that he had been touting.

Instead, analysts said, the choice to talk to Carlson was based partly on his perceived sympathy the former Fox host has repeatedly dismissed criticism of Putin over the years and the opportunity to appeal to the more MAGA reaches of the Republican Party during an election year. That could boost Donald Trump's chances of reelection and convince Republicans to continue to block U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

… He did not ask a single question about Russia's attacks on civilian areas or critical infrastructure in Ukraine, which have killed thousands. There was no mention of the war crimes facing the Russian leader, for the forced deportation of Ukrainian children. Absent too were questions on Russia's sweeping political crackdowns on Putin's critics or the long jail sentences meted out to ordinary Russians staging antiwar protests.

… At several moments, when Carlson tried to interject, he was chastised by the president.

… I'm not exactly sure what I thought of the interview … It's going to take me a year to decide what that was," said Carlson in a video published on his website."

I have never seen Biden do anything but condemn Russia and say Russia will not gain anything from their aggression and has conditioned peace on a full withdrawal from Ukraine. Given those circumstances, what would Putin say?

It is pretty clear, especially when he is winning the war territory and manpower wise, that it is bad negotiation strategy to publicly offer concessions to make peace when the other side is doing the opposite.

LOL to anyone who thinks Putin invaded Ukraine, sorry started a special military operation, because of nazis and NATO. He wrote a freaking paper about why he doesn't think Ukraine shouldn't exist and continues to claim it publicly. He's a revanchist and will take back whatever he can.

Carlson is a journalist. There was a time when journalists reported on things and interviewed public figures with a purpose to inform. It's hard to that time even existed now that corporate media has merged with the state.

Here's another interesting take on the Putin interview and an analysis by Carlson himself.

Not even Fox News could pretend that Tucker was a journalist. He's indistinguishable from the character SC played on the Colbert Report.

EDIT: Adding a fact check on this statement.

This is the most interesting part. It shows just how closely Putin is following Hitler's playbook.
Quote:

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans writes "Hitler was determined to make it look as if the Poles had provoked the hostilities and the SS obliged by staging numerous false-flag operations and 'Polish provocations' against Germans."

It adds "According to the testimony of Sturmbannfhrer Alfred Naujocks at Nuremberg, Reinhard Heydrich and Heinrich "Gestapo" Mller ordered Operation Himmler to make the Poles appear to be the aggressors and to justify the coming war."

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum says that to justify the invasion, Nazi propagandists accused Poland of persecuting ethnic Germans living in Poland.

"They also falsely claimed that Poland was planning, with its allies Great Britain and France, to encircle and dismember Germany. The SS, in collusion with the German military, staged a phony attack on a German radio station. The Germans falsely accused the Poles of this attack. Hitler then used the action to launch a 'retaliatory' campaign against Poland."
Unfortunately for Putin, his military is a hot mess so he will not make it nearly as far in realizing his revanchist dreams as his inspiration Hitler did.
