The thoughts, feelings and opinions of the mother in the 60 Minutes segment that has an adult son with schizophrenia that lives on the street seem so much more compelling than those of some j@erkoff judge or homeless advocate like the one in the segment. Mom has walked the walk, the others just spew word salad.

Yeah a lot of those so called advocates don't want the problem to go away because their $$$ would go away. When I volunteered to do PIC a few years back I got that feeling the unhoused are caught in the middle.
And for those A holes that assume the BS feed to them it's personal choices you are wrong and you make the problems worse. COL in the Bay Area is so high that 100k is low income. People working 40 hours week should not be sleeping in cars. Damn near every Lyft driver I talk to says they work the max hours then switch to Uber to continue working. It's bad business out here…

S.F. ramps up clearing homeless encampments after court guidance

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/sf-homeless-camps-lawsuit-coalition-ninth-circuit-18387283.php

"In a statement, City Attorney David Chiu said he was "pleased" the Ninth Circuit agreed that Ryu's preliminary injunction does not apply to residents who refuse shelter or those who have a shelter bed and choose to maintain a tent on the street…..

Breed's post reflected the tension that has grown between the city and advocates for the homeless. She noted that employees are likely to be monitored by coalition members.

"They will film our city workers. They will try to tell our workers what they can and cannot do," she said. "These activists are the same people who hand out tents to keep people on the street instead of working to bring them indoors, as we are trying to do. And they are the same people instructing and encouraging people to refuse shelter to remain on the street instead of going indoors."

Yes services have to be accessible and a regimen has to be adhered to. But then here comes the rub everyone working in/running these locations are not going to be cool/good people and in a temperamental situation things at a minimum mean people leave and unfortunately at max is someone gets hurt. The people working these jobs are most likely on the verge of becoming homeless themselves…

Addressing how and why this situation came to be so the changes which are needed to make sure people don't become unhoused in the first place need to be first and foremost.

Over the next year as the 1,000's of paused evictions go through the Bay Area homeless population will increase 2-3 fold.

Maybe a 1st step could be to not focus on PSH but on enough beds of some type so cities can enforce laws about sleeping on the street. Even if it is a cot under a roof, get people off the streets.

Not going the PSH route is a waste of time and money and lives. This has been proven time and time again. Very little if any ROI

Before people become homeless because of COL only !!! And then become drug addicted and mentally unstable. Need policy that address the incoming homeless… there are not enough beds for them all. And even for those whom go into shelters then what ?

Democrats have introduced a bill to ban hedge funds from owning single family homes. This is a great idea that will reduce the cost of housing by removing deep pocket demand from the market.

Wealth inequality contributes to the high price of housing (the high price of all assets) because the wealthy invest with their excess funds. This search for return seeks out all assets eventually. It is the running thread from the dotcom bubble to the mortgage backed securities bubble to the everything bubble.

As wealthy investors seek out single family homes as investments, average Americans get priced out. This Democratic proposal will help by making it harder for the wealthy to target single family homes as investments.

I am a big believer that the way to eliminate homelessness, in addition to affordable housing, is to treat the substance abuse and mental health issues and provide job skill training. With that said I have a few questions:

1. In San Francisco, what percentage of the homeless population are locals that lost their jobs and housing?

2. For those not locals, when they became unemployed and homeless, what made them decide to relocate to the Bay Area, an area with a very expensive cost of living?

3. Would the homeless in the Bay Area consider moving to an area with a lower cost of living and more employment opportunity? If not, why not?

4. What percentage of the homeless population had a substance abuse problem or severe mental health issues before becoming homeless?

5. What are all the reasons the homeless deny the offer of shelter?

6. Should the homeless be allowed to live on the street when shelter is available? If yes, why?

7. If homelessness is caused primarily by lack of affordable housing and not by substance abuse and untreated mental health issues, then what is the explanation for this outcome:

How To Solve Our Soaring Homelessness Problem | The Heritage Foundation

https://www.heritage.org/civil-society/commentary/how-solve-our-soaring-homelessness-problem

"Homelessness set two records in 2023. The increase in homelessness between 2022 and 2023 was the largest ever recorded since the government began collecting data in 2007. That brought the number of Americans living in homeless shelters and on the streets to an all-time high.

….. Some unique factors contributed to the jump in homelessness in 2023, but policies to address homelessness have been off track for a long time. For two decades, the federal government has taken a "housing first" approach to homelessness, focusing on "permanent supportive housing" with low or no barriers to entry.

This means providing permanent housing without any conditions, such as meeting sobriety requirements, participating in drug treatment, engaging in mental health counseling or participating in job training. The idea is that giving a person housing will solve homelessness.

…… For example, between 2010 and 2019 California increased its number of permanent supportive housing units by 25,000, but the number of unsheltered homeless people in the state increased by 50%.

….. The Birmingham Model is an example of a successful treatment-first program. It combines housing with treatment, providing people with a private unit while requiring recipients to abstain from substance abuse. Those who fail to remain sober are moved to a spot in a shelter; they can work toward regaining the private unit by staying sober for a week.

….. The federal government should stop prioritizing the costly and inefficient housing-first approach. Instead, funding for programs addressing homelessness should be tied to improved outcomes, such as reduced substance abuse, better mental health, moving people into self-supported housing, and reducing overall rates of homelessness. Approaches to helping the homeless will vary based on the individual."
