Two movies I enjoyed recently. Both very concise and beautiful.

Pig was so unlike what I expected.

Didn't know what to expect during the movie until the end when I realized it was ultimately about letting go of a loss.

I had the same experience. It felt like it was heading towards an expected vengeance direction, but went somewhere way more interesting.

Watched this tonight. It was entertaining in a Lone Survivor kind of way. That "fantastic" rating by the other person was maybe a bit much but I enjoyed it.

Review: 'Plane' is an entertaining, old-school action thriller | Datebook

https://datebook.sfchronicle.com/movies-tv/review-plane-is-an-entertaining-old-school-action-thriller

"Often these days, watching movies seems like watching someone's else's therapy, or at least someone else's indulgence. Movies go on forever and have no impact."
-Mick LaSalle

A good movie for those that like old school escapism and entertainment as opposed to those that go to cocktail parties and pretend to love movies like The Banshees of Inisherin and the Shape of Water.

*Hard to believe Mark Colter isn't a major star.

*The movie is not an A but is a firm B in a world of mostly hard C films.

Say, has your subscription to the resurrection been canceled yet?

(That right there could be a movie!)

She Said on NF is an interesting watch, but in some ways flawed
Lincoln on Hulu when your is a serious mood
Ghosted is funny and good ride while being amazingly unrealistic (just go with it)
I liked A man Named Otto with Tom Hanks, but other may find it to close to a lot of other movies

Anyways, in wake of Treat Williams dying, I thought I'd rewatch the first episode of Everwood, which aired in 2002.

And it's still very good.

Very, very good.

I urge you all to give it a try.

If you have Amazon Prime, just type in "Everwood" in your search bar. And watch Season 1, Episode 1.

Give it a try! I think you'll like it.

(And it has Chris Pratt, if he's your kind of guy.)

Treat Williams died Monday.

John Beasley, the show's narrator and co-star, died on May 30.

(If you watch the episode, you'll see Stephanie Niznik, who died in 2019.)

Anne Heche, who appeared in a later season, died last year.

It's a great show.

Check it out!

So much death.

But it's a good show.

Everwood was created by a guy named Greg Berlanti. Since then, Berlanti has become a TV powerhouse.

On my return flight from England, where you'll recall I was on a genealogical hunting trip, I watched The Lost King.

Philippa was guided by feelings to find king Richard III under a parking lot.

The film did not win big at the box office or the critical acclaim, I imagine. But it was SPOT ON about how a good portion of my research has gone.

Sixth Sense's "I see dead people", might taking it a bit too dramatically, but Yes!

Any genealogy sleuthers out there, watch this film, use the force, let your feelings show you the way! It works.

We went to see "The Killers of the Flower Moon" tonight.
Sadly, I cannot recommend it. It is L O N G. It could/should have been good. The material was there. Scorsese swung and missed on this one, IMO. It should have been about 1+ hour shorter.

BBC/Amazon Outlaws.

Brilliant ensemble (lot of big names internationally like Walken, Steve Merchant of The Office fame, Irish actor Ian McElhinney from Game of Thrones and a thousand other things, etc. that are misfit characters that fit a lot of stereotypes, that come together for huge laughs. Sorta of a take on what would happen if The Wire meets The Office became a British comedy.

Saw an incredible film last night.
Beautiful boy.

And then I wrote my sister-in-law this morning.

Good morning (sister-in-law),

I watched a pretty serious and intense film last night on Amazon Prime TV called "Beautiful Boy" with Steve Carell and Timothy Chalomet.

It's about addiction, relapse, recovery, relapse…. Father and son, the addict. Such familiar territory! Hard to watch, but I feel it's important ground to cover!!

It's shaped the family structure and individuals so much. At the same time that I was cringing, I wanted to share lest it happens again. It's such a common thing to happen, and if only we could inform in advance.

A person need not be in danger of the problem themselves in order for the film to be instructive.

I never want anyone to ever again stumble stupidly into issues of drug and alcohol addiction, either as a parent or a user. My parents had little clue what was happening.

Hard facts of life. It brought up so many memories and realities that are still with us. Those were some hard hard days, and yet, (brother) continues to drink, and I see how his behavior and cognitive are both stunted and impaired.

The drugs discussed in this film is crystal meth and heroin. There is rehab and NA meetings familiar to us, and doctor-talk about the tragic affect on brain function - brain damage.

I realize brain damage is a reality, through drugs/alcohol, through general aging. I think it's important for young adults to know the course of life that can lie ahead of them. Themselves, their children, others they may know in life.

Overdose is the leading cause of death for Americans under 50, I think it said! Incredibly serious and prevalent! And yet, that stat says nothing about the multitudes more whose lives are adversely affected, short of death. It's a scourge upon our nation and all of western civilization!

And yet, we tend to never discuss these things.
I think that's a shame, a missed opportunity where the stakes are so high. Never get started, never just "try", always say NO - be vigilant and aware!

Why must each generation learn things over again when we've already learned? Why do we fail to visit these grounds again as a reminder, as a re-lessoning?

I recommend this difficult film.
Group discussion starter.

In honor of Traitor Trump's victory in Iowa last night, I decided to watch on Netflix tonight "American Traitor: the trial of Axis Sally".

I'd love to see Trump go on trial as a "traitor", because you KNOW what the punishment is for being a traitor! Trump himself especially wanted us to remember that!!!

SPOILER: weak film in many aspects of a fascinating corner of history. She was not guilty on 7 charges but guilty on the 8th. Sentenced to 30 years, served 12. Returned to teach in ohio. She died in 1988. Not worth watching. And the level of traitorous behavior is minuscule compared to Trump.

I recommend Maestro. It is mature. A real movie, not the regular Hollywood trash. You have to listen to dialogue, be willing to invest in characters, appreciate story development. If you want chase scenes and explosions this one isn't for you. I expect this movie to come away with Academy Award nominations and wins. Lead actor and actress, music, makeup, etc. The two acting leads were superb.

I recently saw the trailer and decided not to watch because it showed a gay lean by the star. And now look, I've got absolutely nothing against folks that are gay, and I feel for their social struggle (!). But I don't like films that are created with often the sole objective of putting gay characters in the face of the audience so as to normalize it. I want a film , not a lecture.

But if you say it's that good, I'll watch it!!
And report back here.

I will confess that I bristle when I feel like sexuality is forced on the audience for the sake of apparent inclusivity, etc. Without giving anything away about the movie, that is definitely not the case here - addressing homosexuality is being true to the main character and allows the movie to explore a core dynamic in the relationship that is central to the movie.

I also recently enjoyed The Holdovers. There's a tiny bit of Hollywood feel good / redemption in the story but otherwise it's another "not cheap Hollywood crap" movie, which I approve of.
