The 107th running will be this coming Sunday at 11 am Eastern on NBC.

A simulated practice session goes "bad" as Katherine Legge isnt able to slow quickly enough and drives up the back of Stefan Wilson. Wilson sustained a vertebrae fracture and will not be able to race. Graham Rahal (who got bumped out of the race in qualifying) will take his place in the #24 car for Dreyer & Reinhold Racing.

Ouch!

*JC was my favorite as a boy.The other favorite was Parnelli Jones. Could there be a cooler name for a race car driver?

Many memories of craming into an Oakland theatre to view live transmissions of the 500 in 1964, 65, and 66. Me and my Cal roomies were big fans of Clark, Hill, Stewart and Dan Gurney. Technology revolution playing out in front of you. Gurney's Eagle was a gorgeous machine.

Remember the Andy Granatelli Turbine Car?

"The STP-Paxton Turbocar was an American racing car, designed by Ken Wallis as the STP entry in the Indianapolis 500. Parnelli Jones drove it in the 1967 event. After leading for much of the race, a transmission failure with only eight miles left ended the run. It crashed during qualification for the 1968 race; the damage was not fixed and the car ended its career."

Don't remember that one, but thanks. I do remember the Granatelli / STP Novi of 1965 / 1966. For me, it was about as far as a front engine design could go given the engineering advantages of the rear engine machines demonstrated by Lotus. Historically, the Novi had a huge powerful engine, tons of torque that could break any gearbox it happened to be connected to. Sorry, regret I am unable to post a photo (there is one at 65 Indy Hurtibise).
