My parents got me a lifetime membership to CAA when I graduated. Besides the magazine, are there any other worthwhile benefits that justify the $500? I want my son to stay connected to Cal, but I stay connected to Cal without using utilizing anything to do with CAA.

You can text memos to coaches during games. Monty ran many of my plays, as did Braun before him. My memos were ignored by the last 3 hoop coaches.

You also get alerts when there are disturbances at People's Park.

Ask if he can get free lifetime membership if you donate $1000 to NIL.

My dad gave me one of them, too (back in the day). It was cool because it lasts a lifetime. What else does that? One benefit I have used is that you have to be a CAA member to register for the Lair of the Golden Bear. Used it five times!

Is this your son who plays in the Cal Band? I believe there is a Lifetime Membership for the Cal Band Alumni Association. Bundle the two!

Go Bears!

So when I graduated 2 decades ago, it was also $500 (I guess they don't account for inflation).

They allowed you to pay in installments. I paid $200. And stopped paying.

And to this day, they still try to get me to pay the remaining $300.

I currently have a "okaydo@berkeley.edu" email address. Except without the "okaydo."

But it's a cool screen name. It was my first email address of my life "okaydo@uclink4.berkeley.edu." (Again, without the "okaydo.")

When I graduated, they gave me a forwarding email address: "okaydo@cal.berkeley.edu." (again, without the "okaydo."

Then they switched to full-fledged email/gmail accounts. So I just have the "berkeley.edu."

All without being a full member of the CAA.

But here's the thing: I use YouTube. My account is signed on with my Berkeley email address. I have more than a decade of playlists and other stuff on my Youtube account. But I can't switch emails. They don't allow that. As a result, I can't use my Berkeley email to subscribe to things because you can't do that with a government account.

(I use my regular Gmail account for YouTube TV.)

I hate that they keep sending me magazines because it just makes me feel guilty for never reading them.

I have a lifetime membership because I camp at the Lair every summer. I think it's worth supporting the alumni association but I can't point to anything specific (outside the Lair) where it benefits me personally.

There is a Cal Alumni Association credit card. I have no idea what the benefits are.

The other day I passed by a maybe 65 year old woman at the self-checkout at the store. I noticed that she was paying with one of these Cal Alumni Association credit cards. The Cal logo was obvious.

As I walked by her I said:

"Hey! I like your card!"

She turned and gave me a dirty look before going back to what she was doing. She didn't say a word.

Gotta love the Cal alumni networking opportunities!

Maybe she plays for the other team. Or maybe you need a makeover.

Wow, that's crazy. Whenever I tell older women at the self-checkout that I like their credit card, I always get positive responses.

The camping privileges sound like enough.
Wish I were an alum so I could carry the card in my wallet.

Go bears.

I'm merely a 3x legacy, not good enough.
Buy the flocking card, dad.
Lifetime.
Your great grandchildren will appreciate the psychological influence it has on them.

Okay, who are you quoting here? I've heard that one before. Nice.

But I was going to say to Dimitrig, there's a difference between saying it humbly and appreciatively vs. saying it like a madman who think he can grab em by the card, do whatever he wants with the card.

Sounds like you have a Costanza wallet. I'm not sure where my card is but it's not in my wallet.

The card in the wallet is a metaphor. For all those life benefits that come with it.
But, good one.
And yes, I do tend to be a pack rat.

The Golden Age Passport to the National Parks lasts a lifetime. So far, anyway.
