Without proof of what is true or false with regard to what each is spouting, the entire exercise is futile.

And there will never be any agreement regarding what the truth is since all fact checking organizations are called liars.

DeSantis continually screaming "That's a lie! He's lying! Liar!" is a very poor debating technique. It has a real 10 year old on the playground vibe.

*Boy, that $700M settlement Fox News agreed to has really dried up advertising money. Every other commercial is some Evangelical pitch of one kind or another.

*Gavin is basically in the position of debating Hannity and DeSantis.

Ron was finished before the debate even started. In the long list of fatal mistakes he made in his campaign, agreeing to debate a democratic governor that ... checks notes ... no one fears according to a conservative on another thread .. will be seen as a massive unforced error and a humiliation. And no one should be surprised.

Absolutely. No set of mutually-agreed-upon facts. Oy!

100%. DeSantis: "That's a lie!!" Translation: " How DARE you expose MY lie!!"

Yep. 10-year-old stuff. Very Presidential. ;-)

This is the problem that Fox, MSNBC, CNN, and PBS have. Most of their viewers are 60+, but the "target demographic" for advertisers & ratings is 18-55. These cable news shows are toast. As Bob Iger said, "The age of linear TV [i.e., cable -- and huge monthly cable fees] is over."

MSDNC will corral the biggest share of corporate ads, but they just demoted Mehdi Hasan, one of their most popular hosts, because he would actually challenge guests on their lies & controversial positions. Viewers like that, but guests, not so much.

Newsom: "When are you going to drop out of the race and give Nikki Haley a shot?"

"The clear goal for Mr. DeSantis was to reinvigorate his flagging candidacy against the front-runner, former President Donald J. Trump.

"By the way, how's that going for you, Ron?" Mr. Newsom snapped. Mr. DeSantis forced a smile but didn't speak, as Mr. Newsom continued, "You're down 41 points in your own home state." NY Times

But San Francisco has homeless people who are on drugs and they steal from the CVS! Also, Newsome went to a fancy restaurant during the pandemic!

Just to be clear: There are 2 target demographics.

For entertainment shows, it's 18-49.

For news shows, it's 25-54.

So while total viewership is great for bragging rights, advertisers care about the demo audience.

"And yet, the bias of the questioning was so over the top that it was hard for anyone to keep a straight face. DeSantis was given seemingly unlimited permission to talk over Newsom; when Newsom tried a similar tactic, Hannity swiftly intervened. One might have expected that Hannity would hazard at least one single challenging question to DeSantis, just to pay some lip service to the notion of reciprocity, but he didn't even bother with that. Every single question was some derivative of Ron, why is Florida so great? Why is California so terrible? Please refer to the fact sheet we've worked up for you.

โ€ฆโ€ฆ DeSantis debuted a brand new debate strategy: interjecting "that's a lie," or "false narrative," or "that's falseโ€ฆfalseโ€ฆfalse" off-camera while Newsom was speaking.

โ€ฆ.. Oh, and he brought his own props. As part of a particularly dreadful segment trying to justify his state's book bans, DeSantis produced some pocket porn: a cartoon rendering slightly censored that he claimed to have taken from a California sex-ed indoctrination titleunfortunately it was too small to really appreciate. Later on, when hammering Newsom on California's homelessness problem, he produced a pocket-sized poop map that documented sites of human feces in San Francisco, each denoted by different shades of brown pixels. He held it defiantly, waiting for the camera to zoom in on his folded brown splotch. Really. Yes, really.

โ€ฆ.. It wasn't really two-on-one, though. It was more like three-on-one, with the most formidable opponent coming in the form of the Fox News graphics team. The charts the network produced to factually foreground the lopsided questioning were perhaps the most egregious aspect of the entire event.

โ€ฆ.. One chart compared the raw number of mass shootings in California compared to Florida since the governors took over their respective states, without even an attempt to standardize for population size. California's population is nearly double Florida's. Crime is rampant, Fox News breathlessly insists, and the network did its part by contributing some of the most flagrant chart crime you'll find anywhere.

โ€ฆโ€ฆ You'll be happy to know that after the showcase Kayleigh McEnany said that she thought it was top-notch work from her colleague."

... I only watched the last hour.

I have a feeling a majority of Hannity's audience were surprised that Newsome (by himself) was able to completely humiliate DeSanctimonious, Hannity and his Fox News team.

Really impressive performance Governor!

I think I said back when the Republican campaign started that DeSantis lacked charisma and would look worse the more people were exposed to him.

That appears to have been a good prediction.

He still is.

He is just a horrible candidate and politician.

Just because I think Hillary was a horrible candidate and politician does not mean I doubt her smarts.

I know you are smart enough to know the difference between being smart and being a good politician.

Elon Musk is one of the smartest men. He would also be a disaster as a candidate for president.

Just because DeSantis flamed out as a Republican candidate and stupidly chose to run to Trump's right instead of more to the center like Haley does not take away the fact that he is smart and most assuredly smarter than perople here. I assume you think you are smart but I also assume you may flame out as a candidate if you ran.

DeSantis must have some political skills to have won by such big margins in Florida, so I will give him that. But clearly he's unable to make that work on the national stage.

As opposed to the geniuses on the left who thinks supporting Hamas, taking the sting away from Musk by having places like UC Bekerley unwelcoming for the Jewish community, using terms like Socialism when they don't really mean it, promoting Defund the Police when crime and safety are one of the key items, giving more money when people were putting prior payments in savings and were dying to spend in the face of unprecendented supply chain constraints, saying inflation is transitory despite every other inflation being sticky, putting Biden with all his baggage as the candidate when he may be the only potential candidate other than Harris who could lose to the dangerous Trump, and keeping Menendez in the senate while promoting (rightfully) the expulsion of Santos.

Let's cut to the chase. Do you think you are smarter, on a holistic and objective (as opposed to narrow,, incident by incident basis) than DeSantis? Forget your glib comments on putting down the Republican party (which is deserving of mockery like the Democratic party). And writing glib comments in a forum full of winners spending hours on a football OT forum trying to make themselves feel superior debating the same **** year after year is not defacto proof of superior intelligence.

I'm smart enough to know how your December 1 re-engagement with OT will end. Would you like me to tell you or have you figured it out yet?

Hillary is smart. She came across as smart in debates and was a credible candidate. She made some boneheaded mistakes as well.

But I'm going to go one step further because I think I have to slow it down in order for you to actually understand the point here.

Desantis is smart. He's smarter than Gavin. I've never claimed otherwise. But the problem is that Desantis is operating a game plan that is predicated on and designed for dum dums, since that's what the GOP has become. So Gavin, a less smart person than Desantis, was able to easily defeat Desantis in a debate (putting it mildly) because Ron is trying to sell a loser of a platform to dumb people. Desantis may very well be capable of having a sophisticated policy debate beyond what Gavin could handle, but that would make Desantis lose even more badly to Trump and other GOPers and thus it will never happen.

You're a smart guy but you keep coming back here apparently oblivious to what happens to you when you do. How long before you ball up your fists in anger and run away again? A day, a week or more?

You create your own narrative about me. If your argument is so valid, why do you always try to make this personal?

You create a fake narrative that I rolled up my fist in anger. Why would I be angry. I have been busy with family and board work but have come here from time to time. In fact, other the stupid **** that people repeat over and over, I have even commented from time to timesz. Yes, the same topic after 1,00th time gets boring but I didn't walk way in anger. Where did I write that I did that recently? Why do you take these discussions so personally and emotionally that you make personal attacks and make up a fake narrative?

It seems like you are making the same points that I am - namely that he is smart, and definitely smarter than people here. He just ran a bad campaign. So people here saying he is not smart is objectively laughable.

Don't take these things so personally that you feel the need to make up some fake narrative or go on a personal attack. Calm down and just be confident enough to discuss rationally. You always accuse people of getting angry but you are really the one who seems to take these things personally.

I am sure you have important enough things in life that you see these for what it is. Just bunch of bored people shooting the ***** Don't get so angry.

And writing glib comments in a forum full of winners spending hours on a football OT forum trying to make themselves feel superior debating the same **** year after year is not defacto proof of superior intelligence.
You got me 93. I'm running for president and my intelligence is relevant to the 2024 election. I'm smart enough to understand relevance.
So, do you think Hillary is not smart because she ran for president and ran a horrible campaign and lost to a loser like Trump? Asking since you are smart enough to understand the relevance.

I stopped reading after this remarkably self-unaware claim. If you are unwilling to even read your own posts, why should we pretend this is a real conversation?

That appears to have been a good prediction.

And remember, Desantis is one of the smartest Republicans.

I agree with you - Desantis really is one of the smartest GOP politicians. He's a towering intellectual compared to many of national prominence. The problem is that the GOP platform is built for dum dums.

First of all, is there a posting frequency requirement to be viewed as not being angry? I posted recently on the meaning of polls since that was a new topic. Didn't feel like commenting on all of the old posts making the same old arguments. What is the requirement for future reference to avoid not being accused of walking away in anger?

You are the one who is making all these personal. You have the longest and personal and hostile arguments with Oski, beargoggle, etc, making some shockingly personal accusations toward strangers and yet you keep accusing these folks of making personal attacks. So who is not self-aware?

Try this. Just debate the points and not make personal attacks against the poster. And if you are not reading my post, why bother replying? You must have better things to do.

Classic 93 narrative arc.

Shows up out of nowhere (his previous foray into OT ending just as the dozens of prior engagements have, and just as this one will in an hour, a day or a week), responds to an on topic post about the debate with a bizarre attempt to involve me in a discussion about Desantis' intellect.

I respond with a post agreeing with you and pointing out something else (which could in no way be deemed as personal).

You respond yet again, this time with a personal attack. I mostly ignore your flailing attempt to bait me, since I know at this point you are pretty close to losing it (and, like most people here, I've seen you lose your sh^t time and time again on OT for a wide variety of reasons).

Next, as I apparently failed to take the bait to your satisfaction, you once again made this personal.

Having finally agreed to stoop to your level and respond, you then had the gall to pretend like I was the one who started the personal inquiry and went on with your absurd line of inquiry that somehow I couldn't criticize Desantis unless I thought I would do better as a candidate for President. You've made similar arguments in other contexts so I can only presume that you actually think this is a logical response to criticism. Because you will disappear soon, I'm going to do you a favor and not speak any further on the absurdity of your claim before we start talking about Ivy league schools and pedigree.

Are we done here or are you going to continue to hilariously pretend that I'm the one who made my ridicule of Desantis a personal discussion between you and me?

Just to be clear, this is nothing personal. I don't know you in real life but I do know what you do as a poster here. And the ending to this little exchange was preordained from the very second you were triggered to write a post attempting to bait me into a discussion about my personal intelligence, as if it were at all relevant. You don't have to be as smart as Ron Desantis to see where this was heading. And now we've reached the logical conclusion.

Because I can see the future, I can confidently say I'm going to ignore your next post since we all know it will be full of vitriol and I've proven my point well enough.

You just cannot seem to argue points but would rather roll in the mud in personal attacks.

OK, I posted earlier this week. https://bearinsider.com/forums/6/topics/118308/replies/2267899

And yet you seem to want to take a temperature on my pattern on posting and what that may mean. Why? Why do you care? What am I to you other than words on some over-its-prime OT board? Me getting bored with the old topics doesn't mean I am angry when I still post on new topics.

You are also not being honest in your post. You did not agree with me initially. You took another dig at DeSantis' intelligence by saying he is smart for a GOP. That is an unfair characterization based on his actual bio.

What was my personal attack against you and how did you "ignore my flailing attempt to bait" you? And this is your idea of ignoring? Since you called to question his smarts, I was truly asking if you think you are objectively smarter than him. Why is that an insult? I don't think I am objectively smarter than him. I am not offended by that. Wanted to see if you felt so much superior to him in smarts despite his accomplishments that you think he lacks smarts. That is your idea of a personal attack? Here?!

And my response about the idiocy of the liberal platform wasn't about you. It was a counter to the implication that the idiocy (which I acknowledged) resides solely on the right. I pointed out the idiocy on the left. Again, not a personal attack.

And then you stated snidely that I was right in noticing that you were running for president.

Again, my non-personal attack response was that Hillary is smart but she was still a bad candidate. As such, someone can still be viewed as smart while being a candidate. Hillary lost to freaking idiot Trump. Does this mean she is not smart anymore? I know you are too smart to make that argument. How is that a personal insult?

Then you went down the rabbit hole of how I ran off in a huff (even though I have been posting - just not as frequently since this board feels like a deja vu with the same people making the same arguments on same topics).

So, just refrain from personal insult, don't take me saying you are too smart not to know that Hillary can be smart and still be a bad candidate as a personal attack, and stop with this false sense of familiarity with people you just know here. You don't know oski003, beargoggle, or me, and you making some assumption about us is somewhat an arrogant position to take. So can we stop with personal accusations and just debate the points without hypersensitivity?

I'm sure that DeSantis is smart compared to the average person on the street (you know, the Jay Leno interviews and all... ). But what has he done/said in the past few years that would indicate that he is really smart? I think people who say he is smart are just going by what he did in his college years. And, okay, judging smarts, that is a point in his favor. But he sort of reminds me of the five-star recruit who, for whatever reason, can't play all that well in college. Got overrated.

Is DeSantis "smarter than Gavin" because Newsom has dyslexia and "only" graduated from Santa Clara? When I listen to the two men talk, I am not at all thinking that DeSantis is smarter. Part of this might be my political bias, but I see plenty of smart people right of center and plenty of dumb ones who are left of center, so maybe it's more than that.
