Calm down.

I'm descended from Brewster of the Mayflower (1620), but also have Scottish and Irish ancestors who came in the mid 1800's.

Orangemen?
I don't know any of this history you just referred to.

It was a joke. Are you really that devoid of a sense of humor? Do we need to talk about how black Vice President Harris' lineage was before being raped by a slaveowner?

Sigh….

My post was indeed a reference to jet black skin of the South Sudan players.

The dark black skin color of people from South Sudan is often described using terms such as "ebony" or "jet black." This deep pigmentation is characteristic of many Nilotic ethnic groups in the region, including the Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk peoples.

Here in the US, we have historically referred to anyone who has the slightest hint of African roots, whether it be in their skin tone or the curl of their hair as "black". However, if you look at the diversity of African DNA, per famed geneticist Spencer Wells… well, from Google AI:

Quote:

Geneticist Spencer Wells has discussed how Africa is the most genetically diverse continent in the world, and how all humans share DNA passed down from their African ancestors. In his TED Talk, A Family Tree for Humanity, Wells describes his Genographic Project, which uses shared DNA to understand how humans are connected. Wells notes that African populations have greater genetic diversity, less linkage disequilibrium, and more extensive population substructure than non-African populations. Africans also have genetic adaptations that have evolved in response to their diverse climates, diets, and exposure to infectious diseases.

Wells also notes that all humans share a single ancestor in Africa, Mitochondrial Eve, who lived within the last 200,000 years. On the male side, the Y-chromosome Adam lived around 60,000 years ago, which is only about 2,000 human generations. Wells uses the ancestry of the Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings family to illustrate that all humans are essentially family, and that only 8% of genetic differences are found between the classic "races".

So, take a population a humans that lived in Africa, spread out and began to mutate, differentiate one from another… and then, one subset of those left Africa and began to further mutate and differentiate.

…It's all quite fascinating. I celebrate our shared human diversity!

It dawned on me while typing all this that a possible "opposite" expression of human coloring could be in the red head gingers of Scotland or the blonde/blue of Sweden. They are as different from mainland Europe as the Nilotic people are from the average African.

I simply must find that photo of me with Manute Bol - whatever happened to that?

Thank you for assisting in the defense against fools. But I don't think it's proper to automatically state (as commonly happens) that descendants of white men and black women were the product of rape, even if the man was a "slave owner".

I'm not trying to minimize the horrible aspects of slavery, which included rape.
I'm just saying, we don't know exactly what the nature of any one particular relationship was.

Rape is a powerful and varied word. It can mean physically overpowering, tearing a person's clothes off. Assault. Battery. It can also mean exploitation of coercion.

I imagine that sometimes a person who has grown up in a social system with severe inequality could allow themselves to engage willingly in a sexual relationship for personal gain, for personal interests. Is this "rape"?

Dr. Henry Louis Gates discusses such delicate topics with guests on his show Finding Your Roots excellently! I recall at least once he showed a black guest, who was the product of one such relationship, that the slave owning white man remained married to his black slave (mother of his children) for decades, long after the emancipation proclamation was announced.

Gates pointed out that we could never know the nature of their relationship, or how it began, but it did end with all the hallmarks of a committed love relationship as we know it now. It was states as such in the man's will upon his death.

tRump just exponentially ratcheted up the self loathing/Tom factor for any Black person that votes for him.

With his limited intellect, absence of self awareness, tone deafness and supplemented by his delusional state, he actually thought he was going to speak to that convention and hide his contempt for them.

I don't know if calling 1/3rd of younger black voters Uncle Toms is good move, I suspect it isn't, but I have no doubt it will be very common from non-black Democrats in the coming months.

I don't think it is a good idea to call a group of people black, which is just a color, when the proper spelling is Black, which refers to people of the African diaspora (I'm pretty sure your team, with glee, enjoy the politicization of the word and consciously use the lowercase b).

I also don't think it is a very good idea for anyone to vote for tRump, especially a person of color. If 1/3rd of younger Black voters don't like being tagged with the term "Tom," then they should stop acting like one.

Surely you understand that many people disagree with the idiotic decision, only made some 5-10 years ago, to capitalize the "B" yet leave the "W" in "white" lowercase. You must understand why that decision would bother a large portion of the population.

I'll take it a step further and point out how stupid it is to call blacks "African American" when many of then are from non-African parts of the world. Many blacks themselves are opposed to the silly "African American" label.

It is what it is. We are far too focused on race. It is not healthy.

I'm in no position to state a thing about this relationship I just learned of. But I'll wait for the upcoming research. Maybe Harris should become one of Gates' show guests. That would be awesome!

Anyone else here watch Finding Your Roots? I'm a big fan!
Gates does more for race relations than anyone because he shows us, explains to us, teaches us how America really is one big melting pot.

Sadly, we keep F'ing it up by creating divisions where none are necessary.

To wit, violator #1: Donald Trump, aka Total Ass Whole!!!!

I don't think Donold is looking for a "winning" argument as in winning people over to his side so much as he's looking to rev up his base. They get excited when he attacks minorities.

He won in 2016 because his deplorables were more energized than Clinton voters (though demographics have shifted in the democrats favor since then). He lost in 2020 because the anti-Donold vote was more energized.

In 2024 we will see who is more energized. Vice President Harris has certainly pumped some energy onto the Democratic side. Donold is now trying to do the same for his side.

Trump remarks on Harris' race echo his birtherism about Obama

https://www.axios.com/2024/08/01/trump-kamala-harris-black-birtherism

"Donald Trump's audacious lie about Vice President Kamala Harris' race confirmed what many had long suspected: running against a Black woman could summon the former president's worst impulses.

Why it matters: Amid outrage from Democrats and discomfort from Republicans, Trump is doubling down on his incendiary claim that Harris recently "became a Black person" for political convenience.
In one fell swoop, Trump hijacked a news cycle dominated by the enthusiasm surrounding Harris' campaign and redirected attention to his long and controversial record on race."

Unfortunately, people are mostly desensitized to it or watching the Olympics.
