It is possible to save property with proper planning and action. Many posters here would have us believe that the government was powerless and nothing could have been done to prevent the catastrophic results of their poor preparation and lack of action.

"The Pacific Palisades fire may have been caused by the re-ignition of an old fire, according to a Washington Post analysis of images, radio communications and witness interviews (gift link).

Firefighters had put out the old fire six days before the Palisades fire started. Residents believe that one was caused by New Year's Eve fireworks. Then, the Palisades fire appeared to start from the same spot.

The big picture: "From Colorado to California to Hawaii, flare-ups of previous fires, known as re-ignition, have been the cause of some of the nation's most catastrophic and deadly wildfires," The Post reports."

There are three fundamental issues at play here:

1. Getting water to any fire
2. Fuel load reduction
3. Incompetent management

LA County knew this was an extreme weather event, and Karen Bass: left for Africa; while a top deputy was out on suspicion of phoning in bomb threats; and left her rookie water manager in charge.

"In the Palisades, there was a shortage of water at a certain point, or is that not accurate?" Musk asked.

"There was water, we have water reservoirs," the firefighter replied, but stressed that too many fires burning at once resulted in low water pressure, with some firefighters unable to battle blazes

"Just an example, if we have one building burning, we can flow 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters) a minute on that one building," he said. After the exchange with the firefighter, and apparently unable to lay the blame where he wanted to, Musk stopped the recording."

That firefighter apparently did not mention that the main reservoir for the Palisades region had been sitting empty for a year. Capacity 117 million gallons right on top of that fire, empty and offline!

Quote:

State to probe why Pacific Palisades reservoir was offline, empty when firestorm exploded

A large reservoir in Pacific Palisades that is part of the Los Angeles water supply system was out of commission when a ferocious wildfire destroyed thousands of homes and other structures nearby, the Los Angeles Times found.

Officials said that the Santa Ynez Reservoir had been closed since about February for repairs to its cover, leaving a 117-million-gallon water storage complex empty in the heart of the Palisades for nearly a year.

The revelation comes amid growing questions about why firefighters ran out of water while battling the blaze, which ignited Tuesday during catastrophically high winds. The Times reported early Wednesday that numerous fire hydrants in higher-elevation streets of the Palisades went dry, leaving crews struggling with low water pressure as they combated the flames

What would be the demand BEFORE the fires took off? In the fires beginning stages when a response was more manageable, less water would be needed and could reduce or halt its spread. Early action is key. The fire probably grows exponentially.

A LEO I know suggests more assets should have been moved to the area more quickly and proactively.

Then again, the Mayor was in Africa and her Deputy is allegedly suspended over alleged bomb threats. FBI investigating. And the LADWP is a rookie water manager.

How many days would it take to fill the hilltop reservoir? With dry conditions and strong winds coming, it should have been filled expeditiously.

I have no dog in this fight so if the scope of this tragedy could have significantly been reduced but for the reservoir situation, then let heads roll.

I suppose my only real interest is to confirm the fact that guys like Trump and Musk are not interested in any facts that run counter to the narrative they are married to for the maximum political weaponization of this horrible situation.

This article raises interesting issues regarding the empty reservoir and causation:

*I assume water delivery is a major issue regardless of the status of that reservoir. A Fire Chief in the 60 Minutes segment last night said they would have needed 28,000 fire trucks to fight the massive blaze and there aren't that many in California. Add to that the fact the winds kept the water/fire suppression dumping planes and Chinooks out of service at the most critical time.

From what I heard from a former LA Water and Power District official, the Palisades water system had capacity of
3 million gallons.

3 tanks at 1 million gallons each. They were full and became depleted by 3AM on January 8th according to LADP and Power CEO and Chief Engineer Janisse Quinones at a press conference.

3 million gallons gets depleted pretty fast when you are battling so many infernos and homes.
Quinones said that the demand was 4X greater than "we've ever seen in the system"

Thus, these narratives from the Orange Buffoon and his buddies are pretty stupid.

There is no such "water restoration declaration" as Trump has claimed and it doesn't matter what's going on in the SF Bay / Delta, Colorado, or Eastern Sierra water systems.

It all comes down to do you have adequate local storage?

Think your block is "safe" because of a fire hydrant on it?
Think again.

That hydrant is probably only good for fighting a fire on one home for 4 hours at 1200 gpm.
Buildings 10 feet or less from each other require at least 1500 gpm for a minimum of 2 hours of firefighting.

The capacity of that reservoir above Palisades alone is 117 million gallons, so your figure of 3 million gallons is way off.

Had that reservoir been online, they would have had all the water they needed, as well as water pressure in the hydrants on the hills.

Had that reservoir been online, they would have had all the water they needed, as well as water pressure in the hydrants on the hills.

Your narrative assumes that the water tanks could be re-filled by this Reservoir at the same rate the water is being used by the firefighters.

Got a link that substantiates that claim?
Was the Reservoir's water system designed and engineered with that pathway in mind?

Had the reservoir been operable, water pressure in the Palisades would have lasted longer on Tuesday night, said former DWP general manager Martin Adams, an expert on the city's water system. But only for a time.

"You still would have ended up with serious drops in pressure," Adams said in an interview Thursday. "Would Santa Ynez [Reservoir] have helped? Yes, to some extent. Would it have saved the day? I don't think so."

A DWP official acknowledged that the reservoir's absence likely contributed to some diminished pressure and dry hydrants in upper regions of the Palisades.

However, a spokesperson for the utility said in a statement that DWP was still evaluating the effect of the reservoir being placed offline, and that staffers were conducting a root-cause analysis.

"Our primary focus is to provide water supply throughout the city," the DWP spokesperson said, adding, "The system was never designed for a wildfire scenario that we are experiencing."

Well, at least this is a valid question. I hope all three don't share the same feeder line, but there still would be water incoming.

If outflow is faster than inflow, that is another management failure, and why didn't they modify that situation for the always-eminent 20- or 40-year conflagration? Same for the feeder line into that primary reservoir.

Why wasn't the reservoir system designed to also provide wildfire assistance? Desert environment, more than ten million inhabitants, and Santa Ana winds normal. Were residents supposed to fight fires with purses and Gladstones menus?

There are dozens of ways to reduce the fire load (fuel) instead of just crossing our fingers and jetting off to Africa or France.

We have 24,000 National Guard in California alone, yet only 1,800 have been called up.

The reason these fires are so bad is because man presumes he can control nature. Nature is more powerful than man and always will be. Fires are part of nature. Best you can do is have lots more small fires in the hope of reducing the one part of the fuel that you have some small ability to control. Can't control the rain. Can't control the wind. But you can control where you build houses, what materials you build them with, the infrastructure you build to put out the fires that do start, and what you do with the extra water you get from the good rainy seasons.

Democrats had too many unforced errors with the above.

And the solution- rebuild 5000 square foot houses in the same area occupied by two "environmentally conscious" celebrities who purchase carbon credits to cover their trips to Tahiti

It's interesting that all the ballyhooed " carbon savings" from our state initiatives on power generation have been wiped out in a week.

The Texas Freeze was a once in 72 year travesty. At least seven resigned, and at least one person was fired.

The Santa Ana winds happen yearly. California has chosen to limit logging, thinning, controlled burns, etc, and redirect money to solar panels, open drug bazaars (aka homeless), even subsiding the open use of hard drugs. Recently the state couldn't even account for $24 billion spent on said drug bazaars. California also openly entices and subsidizes illegal immigration. The Sierra Club also allegedly sued to destroy fire trails, which makes fighting fires much tougher. (Environmental extremists claim fire is natural, but omit that we have 50 years of fuel on our forest floors, forests and hillsides out of equilibrium, and neighborhoods built into forested areas.)

Where are the annual fire breaks, controlled burns, herds of goats, etc.? Chaparral is different than forested areas, but maintenence is still needed.

Our fires continue to get bigger and hotter, destroying the environment and soil. If we logged and thinned our forests, fires would be less intense, easier to manage, we could harvest trees, and prevent CO2 from entering the atmosphere. If it's really the boogie man.

The Tubbs Fire in 2017 burned over 36,000 acres across populated Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties, destroying more than 5,600 structures and 22 lives. I used to drive there several times a month and never saw a single instance of thinning, maintenance, or fire breaks. $5.6 Billion in costs is one estimate.

The Mendocino Fire of 2018 burned 459,123 acres.

Also in 2018 The Camp Fire caused 85 fatalities, took 18,000 structures, causing an estimated $16.5 billion in damages.

The August Fire in 2020 burned 1,032,648 acres.

The Dixie Fire of 2021 burned 963,309 acres.

Yet the idealogues are consumed with not maintaining our forests, harvesting lumber (which provides jobs and lowers lumber prices), cutting fire breaks, having controlled burns, reducing Super Fires and CO2 release.
