State to probe why Pacific Palisades reservoir was offline, empty when firestorm exploded
A large reservoir in Pacific Palisades that is part of the Los Angeles water supply system was out of commission when a ferocious wildfire destroyed thousands of homes and other structures nearby, the Los Angeles Times found.
Officials said that the Santa Ynez Reservoir had been closed since about February for repairs to its cover, leaving a 117-million-gallon water storage complex empty in the heart of the Palisades for nearly a year.
The revelation comes amid growing questions about why firefighters ran out of water while battling the blaze, which ignited Tuesday during catastrophically high winds. The Times reported early Wednesday that numerous fire hydrants in higher-elevation streets of the Palisades went dry, leaving crews struggling with low water pressure as they combated the flames

"The Pacific Palisades fire may have been caused by the re-ignition of an old fire, according to a Washington Post analysis of images, radio communications and witness interviews (gift link).
Firefighters had put out the old fire six days before the Palisades fire started. Residents believe that one was caused by New Year's Eve fireworks. Then, the Palisades fire appeared to start from the same spot.
The big picture: "From Colorado to California to Hawaii, flare-ups of previous fires, known as re-ignition, have been the cause of some of the nation's most catastrophic and deadly wildfires," The Post reports."

From what I heard from a former LA Water and Power District official, the Palisades water system had capacity of 3 million gallons.
3 tanks at 1 million gallons each. They were full and became depleted by 3AM on January 8th according to LADP and Power CEO and Chief Engineer Janisse Quinones at a press conference.
3 million gallons gets depleted pretty fast when you are battling so many infernos and homes.
Quinones said that the demand was 4X greater than "we've ever seen in the system"
Thus, these narratives from the Orange Buffoon and his buddies are pretty stupid.
There is no such "water restoration declaration" as Trump has claimed and it doesn't matter what's going on in the SF Bay / Delta, Colorado, or Eastern Sierra water systems.
It all comes down to do you have adequate local storage?
Think your block is "safe" because of a fire hydrant on it?
Think again.
That hydrant is probably only good for fighting a fire on one home for 4 hours at 1200 gpm.
Buildings 10 feet or less from each other require at least 1500 gpm for a minimum of 2 hours of firefighting.

The capacity of that reservoir above Palisades alone is 117 million gallons, so your figure of 3 million gallons is way off.
Had that reservoir been online, they would have had all the water they needed, as well as water pressure in the hydrants on the hills.
That is a heartbreaking (yet informative) read. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.bearister said:

One Week Until No Joe said:The reason these fires are so bad is because man presumes he can control nature. Nature is more powerful than man and always will be. Fires are part of nature. Best you can do is have lots more small fires in the hope of reducing the one part of the fuel that you have some small ability to control. Can't control the rain. Can't control the wind. But you can control where you build houses, what materials you build them with, the infrastructure you build to put out the fires that do start, and what you do with the extra water you get from the good rainy seasons.Big C said:

The insurance companies saw this coming, it should not be a shock to the LA mayor and other leaders. The reason they cancelled fire insurance is because the risk was so high they had to raise premiums, but LA blocked them from doing that, so they cancelled policies. The whole thing is a failure of leadership, there's no other way to deny this. Oh and btw, they are going to have to count on the feds to bail them out. The scale of this eff up is going to be felt by the entire country.
It is a despicable stance Republicans are taking, where they won't back aid to blue states like California unless they stop being woke. President Biden and Dems made no such demands of red states.
