In prior decades many commercial pilots came from the military where they racked up considerable flight hours.

That's probably verboten, given DEI Wokeness.

When Scottish grandfathers start crashing planes, we'll criticize them.

Hey, maybe this plane crash just happened and no one knows what the reason is yet. Anyone think of that

Footage shows a very, very hard landing that was also a bit off-center, collapsing the starboard landing gear, tearing off the wing on that side, which turned the other wing up and flipped the fuselage upside down. Pilot error.

You've got some expertise in airline disasters, then?

Even to this amateur's eyes, it did look like a very hard landing.

I was a base training captain for a major airline. It looks like the aircraft did not flare (raise the nose) before touching down. A 'no flare' or 'late flare' can sometimes happen when the pilot becomes overly focused on the crosswind. In crosswind landings on some aircraft types, the technique used is 'wing down, opposite rudder'. The aircraft in the video has the right wing down indicating that there was a significant crosswind from the right. It looks like the entire force of the hard landing was absorbed by the right gear and right wing which then suffered structural failure.

Don't you think its a bit odd that so little information has been released about the pilots? No names (maybe they have privacy concerns), no description of their experience, etc. For the DC crash, we almost immediately had that type of information.

While we don't know the cause of the crash, I have seen several interviews where pilots/experts have indicated that the plane descended way too fast and failed to "flare" (lift its nose). It was too hard a landing. We don't know why yet - could be due to a mechanical issue or even weather. But mostly scenario is pilot error.

One additional factor - the best and/or more experienced pilots fly bigger planes. Regardless of age/sex of the pilots, there was a reason they were flying the small commuter plane and not a widebody jet.

Let's see the stats for the last 20 - 30 years of accidents.

Typical age of the pilots, years flying, type of training, sex, pilot test score (?), rank in training class, training school, etc.

I'm happy to wait for further information to come out before passing judgment or making speculation.

Interesting that you're so willing to wait and see in this case before "speculating", but not in many others. It is almost like your political preferences play a role as to when you're inclined to speculate and make assumptions (like wildly asserting Musk is the de facto president).

I say Musk is the de facto president because he acts like it live on camera.

And anyway, whatever you accuse me of you yourself are at least equally guilty of, if not more so. Why don't you give up on trying to impugn my motives and just address arguments on the merits? I'm getting tired of this sanctimonious routine.

Sanctimony mixed with ignorance is all the right has. They have no results they can point to. No policy other than slash and burn. Just slavish devotion to one man and his oligarch buddies.

Would you be OK flying to Canada in stormy winter conditions with a 26 year old pilot who got her license 38 days ago at the helm?

Assuming this is true, then it seems likely there was a pilot-error problem.

There's a whole lot yet to be learned/investigated. Before we bury the pilot because a) she's a woman and b) young, let's not forget she was working as a flight instructor before moving up to jets. That would tend to suggest a better level of expertise than the average 26 year old pilot.

Still, I expect the rush to condemn will continue unabated for the near future. A year from now when the final report comes out and if (a big if) there were factors beyond the pilot's control, I fully expect it to go unnoticed around here.
