What a turd. Last night listened to the full Charlie Kirk podcast w Hairgel, and GN continued to use the Lord's name in vain with a devout Christian. He closed the program w two more slurs, and then said "Get over it."

Clueless and lack of class.

ALL CAPS? The interns working for Newsom aren't messing around this time.

Kinda confused why MAGA wouldn't be proud to own the fascism here because that is where Miller drew his inspiration from, including the Goebbels "money shot" word "Storm."

Is using ALL CAPS the left-wing green light for assassination?

Will Newsom's new censorship edict prevent discussing illegal immigrants?

Not a good policy to run for POTUS on. $500K - $1 million fines for harassing or Hateful online comments about historically marginalized people. (Ergo, not Europeans.)

This is a great example of what is so wrong in our politics. There are rational reasons to dislike/oppose GN. I probably am in that camp

But he is absolutely NOT to blame for those fires nor the loss of life. We have enough "n" to draw fairly straightforward conclusions.

1) The worst situations is when we have nighttime santa anas that limit nighttime operations by helicopters and air tankers for safety reasons.

2) Ground assets are limited in areas where topgraphy/development limit routes out.

3) Limited setbacks also a problem as fire leap from structure to structure.

4) Windblown embers are traveling up to 3 miles and sparking new fires at the worst of the event. This makes ground crews particularly at risk and why most agencies demand at LEAST 2 ways out before they commit to structure protection.

5) Most structures are lost within 10-12 hours - long before other agencies can send support. Sending support early is problematic because with climate change AND development at the urban/wildland interface they have their own worries to be concerned about.

No governor is stopping those fires. No amount of water was saving homes. The ONLY thing that stops them is when the wind stops. And Palisades was particularly problematic (the map is fascinating) because the winds set up alomost on a perfect vector for the street grid layout meeting that fire was jumping house to house without any natural breaks from the streets.

The worst part about Wood's tweet is that it takes responsibility away from where it should - individual homeowners createing defensible space, understanding risk, hardening eves and looking at how their home could combust.

He became governor in 2018 and could have made fire suppression a top priority, not orthodoxy. Yes, there still would have been some damage.

- he exaggerated fuel reduction efforts at least one year
- fire / hiking trails haven't been maintained in PP for years
- he released a SoCal trained volunteer wildfire crew for political reasons; precious time was lost as our National Guard went through basic fire training
- he could have increased the numbers of trained wildfire personnel
- he released prisoners early who were trained to fight wildfires
- he could have pushed President Trump and Biden to clear / maintain State Federal lands
- he could have pushed Karen Bass to do more
- he could have changed state policy temporarily, or permanently, to allow outside crews to immediately attack the fire; not have to travel to Sacramento for certification! Wave the requirement, or put the Inspectors onsite
- we could have bought one or two giant super soaker airplanes
- he could have relaxed state rules for home owners to remove trees on their own property
- same for animal grazing (goat crew $500, human crew $28,000); goats helped save the Reagan Library!

Newsom wasn't proactive; Arnold Schwarzenegger was on some issues.

I really don't know where to begin. You clearly do not know fire (are you even FROM california???)

Again, a lot of the stuff you are talking about in respect to GROUND crews is almost irrelevant during an evening santa ana fire. We saw it in San Diego during both the Witch and the Cedar fire. As a Cal person you should know the history of the oakland hills fire - when the winds picked up at night there is limited things that can be done with an ignition. These fires essentially burn until the winds die down and you can NOT put ground crews in many places because of the risk your are placing them in.

you can't fly super soakers at night. It is too dangerous. WAY too dangerous. Depending on the winds and visibility they maybe grounded during the day.

Homeowners absolutely could have removed trees and there was no state policy that prohibited that. But once it got into the Dense parts of PP and Altanda the setbacks are too small and the fire was jumping structure to structure. I looked at pre-fire pics from PP....on the worst hit blocks the setbacks looked less than 10 feet.

Animal grazing is of limited impact in the chaparral that predominates in both fire areas. It is most effective in areas where you have non native grasses (such as in the Simi Valley Area).

Finally, one aside. Part of the dumbest things said about the fire is comparing proper forest management (fire breaks, clearing dead trees, thinning) which are effective in hard word/pine forests with chaparral which dominates Southern California and which is the gravest threat in Santa Anas. For example - sparks travel up to 3 miles. Given the nature of those sorts of fires you would need to have fire breaks a mile wide to stop fires during the night. They work in the DAYTIME because you have helicopters/fixed wing to lay down suppressant ahead of the advance and can put out spot fires that ignite. But neither of those work for fires like PP.

The ONE thing that could have been done was deenergize the grid. But that creates a firestorm of protest. Only after a decade of success has San diego semi-warmed to it - and even then MAGA republicans in East County scream about it. But doing that during January probably could have helped. I assume that will be much more the SOP for Edison and LADWP moving forward.
