I had neighbors who retired from Amgen a few years ago and bought a second home in Ashland, Oregon. They really loved the Shakespeare Theater Festival that runs for 7-months across three theaters and the cultural scene.

A year ago they sold their home here and moved up to Ashland permanently.

FYI

Ashland, Oregon, is a city in the Rogue Valley known for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Southern Oregon University, and its vibrant arts scene, nestled at the base of the Siskiyou and Cascade mountains near the California border. It's a cultural hub with galleries, theaters, and restaurants, attracting tourists with its outdoor recreation, including nearby Mt. Ashland Ski Park, Lithia Park, and access to the Rogue River. The city has a progressive, outdoorsy, and artistic character, with a history as a railroad and resort town that revitalized around its cultural institutions.

A friend moved to Lehi, Utah, loves it. Was talking to me from Starbucks and laughed. A woman left her purse in the seating area while she went to the restroom, no concern for its safety.

Well, it keeps the riff raff out.

Only high class people only.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

No it doesn't lmao. Feel free to look on our streets and in our jails.

Imagine the picture if Newsom hadn't closed 3-4 prisons. More repeat felons locked up, safer streets, but less money for illegal immigrants.

Well, their new extravagant Capitol expansion includes private, secure entry / exits, so Democrat Socialists don't have to answer reporters questions after ridiculous votes.

He's closing a 5th one now I think. County jails are exploding at the seams and the only release valve is to parole more people and do it earlier into sentences.

Too bad the misinformation merchants on this board are at it with the misinformation re: Newsom:

Yes, Governor Gavin Newsom is systematically closing prisons in California, but official data shows these closures are a result of a shrinking inmate population rather than a mechanism forcing early parole or mass releases.

The Status of Prison Closures
By the time Governor Newsom leaves office, his administration will have shut down five state prisons. The state's overall incarcerated population has plummeted from a peak of roughly 173,000 in 2006 to around 91,000the lowest level since the late 1980s.
The facilities affected by this reduction include:
  • Four completed closures: Deuel Vocational Institution (Tracy), California Correctional Center (Susanville), Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (Blythe), and the California City Correctional Facility (a leased property).
  • The fifth upcoming closure: The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is scheduled to close the California Rehabilitation Center (CRC) in Norco by October 2026. [
The closures are driven by a need to eliminate empty beds and cut spending, with the upcoming Norco closure projected to save the state $150 million annually to help address the state budget deficit.

Are Closures Causing More Releases and Parole?
No, the closures themselves do not trigger early releases or automatic parole.
When a prison is shut down, the inmates are not let out; instead, they are reassigned and transferred to other remaining facilities within the state system. The CDCR explicitly confirmed that no inmates are granted early release because of the upcoming 2026 Norco closure.
The broader long-term drop in California's prison populationwhich made these closures possible in the first placeis tied to other distinct factors:
  • Prior Legal Mandates: A 2011 U.S. Supreme Court order forced California to reduce catastrophic overcrowding in its prisons.
  • Sentencing Reforms: Voter-approved ballot initiatives over the past decade (such as Propositions 47 and 57) shortened sentences for certain nonviolent crimes, changing how quickly individuals naturally exit the system.
  • Parole Realities: While the Newsom administration previously expanded credit-earning opportunities for inmates to shave time off sentences through rehabilitation programs, data from the Board of Parole Hearings indicates that actual parole grant rates have remained strictly regulated, with the board approving a relatively small minority of overall referrals. Furthermore, recent legislation like Proposition 36 is projected to lengthen certain prison terms, actually slowing down or delaying short-term releases to parole.
While local law enforcement groups and correctional officer unions have criticized the closuresarguing that consolidating inmates increases density and violence inside the remaining facilitiesthe shutdowns do not dictate or accelerate individual inmate release dates.

1) Close prisons.
2) To help reduce overcrowding, give folks lower sentences.
3) To help reduce overcrowding, put folks with lower sentences in local jails
4) Because there is no room in local jails, catch and release.
5) Property crime runs rampant.

I've never seen so many career criminals w long rap sheets walking free.

1. Many charges never even filed or investigated due to backlogs or local reticence, DEI, etc
2. Many citizens now don't even file crime reports bc of non prosecution, and in some instances, they don't want their insurance premiums raised, or coverage dropped (like auto)
3. Charges downgraded
4. "Diversion" programs
5. Prosecutors and judges don't convict, others get sweetheart deals
6. Some released on personal recognizance
7. Reduce the Demand to incentivize prison reduction
8. California citizens voted in Prop 36 overwhelmingly - 70% - to stop REPEAT retail and drug crimes, but Democrat Socialists only allocated a paltry $370 million to implement it

At least at the Federal level, Trump freed up federal penitentiary space by pardoning J6 convicted felons (including Proud Boys) that caused serious bodily harm on police, some with deadly weapons. As Holy Hubert used to say, "God Bless his dirty heart."
