A letter was sent to the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate citing his authority as Commander in Chief and claiming compliance with the War Powers Resolution, which requires notification within 48 hours of military action.

Literally 2 different press conferences in one.

Hegseth with an audience of 1.
And Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Dan Caine with an audience of America.

Caine was great at sharing information this morning with the media about Operation Midnight Hammer and many strategic specifics about the military plan. Very professional, low-key, unemotional.

Hegseth was totally opposite. Just another animated Trump attack dog.

He did nothing other than blast the media and attack CNN for their reporting even though they reported exactly the "preliminary, low confidence" of the DIA report that was not a "coordinated intelligence assessment".

Hegseth even attacked his former colleague at FOX NEWS Jennifer Griffin for asking a most basic question and saying to her face, "You've been the worst!"

One really wonders how big of a Fool's errand this is, given that more battle damage assessment (BDA) and intell will be coming out.

Beating up the media looks stupid.
There isn't anything that they reported that was false.

"The President has rejected the Defence Intelligence Agency's leaked initial judgment that the American attack on Iran's nuclear facilities may not have been a knock-out blow, with a White House spokesperson also saying: "This alleged assessment is flat-out wrong."

Speaking from his home in California, Panetta said: "There's no question that when the US President makes a statement that our intelligence assessments are wrong and doesn't believe our own intelligence, that creates a very dangerous moment."

"It undermines the work of our intelligence professionals who really are focused on trying to provide the President with the truth. When the President questions their credibility, that certainly undermines their morale, I'm sure.

"But secondly, it also creates a real problem for the President, because if he rejects the intelligence he's receiving, then what will be the basis for the decisions that he makes in the future, and that is a very scary prospect."

No. He won't tell Congress what he's going to do beforehand, and now this morning I read that he won't tell them the intelligence report after it's happened.

The military and information services ALL reside under the executive branch and so he's going to co-opt the entirety of it, along with the IRS, the Federal Elections Commission, 5 of 9 SCOTUS judges, etc etc etc, and then when any judge rules against him he'll just say "whatever, try and stop me with your mere paper rulings".

Kinda sounds like a dictatorship, right?

There is some uncertainty as to the effectiveness of the bombing raid, definitely some damage cause to the Iranian facilities but the extent of that is uncertain.

Trump and the IC stating that the damage is extensive closes the door to further attacks, including potential Israeli nuclear strikes on these sites. The Israelis don't have any bombers capable of dropping heavy bunker busters like the ones used by the B2s, however they do have tactical nukes that could be delivered by their fighter0bomber fleet, which would destroy Iranian sites. They are of course reckless enough to use these against Iran, which would be a major, major escalation. So Trump claiming that the mission was accomplished is the responsible policy move here.

Now "the sky is falling, Iran can attack any day" was taken off the table, giving President Trump room to maneuver. The IC is trying to put him back in that box.

Meanwhile, the IC is still trying to remove Tulsi.
Part of me wonders what IC means in this context (probably not Integrated Circuit), but most of me says life is too short to worry about movielover's shorthand transcriptions.
"Intelligence Community" is my guess.

I find this humorous because when it suits Trump he would call the intelligence community part of the so called "deep state".

You know what deep state means?
It means anyone who has been in DC for a long time. And they are the enemy of Trump because he's new and at any rate doesn't want to adhere to any of the old ways. No norms. Nor rules. No conventions. As Marty Baron said, Trump wants to be the arbiter of facts regarding justice, social policy, interest rates, military and foreign relations - everything. He wants to walk in and have control of it all, and anything that gets in his way and he doesn't like he can simply call it the "deep state" to discredit it politically and attempt to take it over.

When he likes the intelligence community, it's HIS intelligence community.
When he doesn't like it, it's the so-called "deep state".
His followers are too stupid to get this brainwashing that he does.

It would have been enough to fly over the country undetected and drop munitions in their desert just to show. Perhaps that's what they did - I mean, how many deaths attributed to bombs we dropped? I've heard nothing of that.

Those people's loved ones will want revenge.

Closing the door to further attacks for now. If there are repercussions to this action they won't be felt after only a week. It will be months or years down the line.

Right, Israel has been dealt heavy blows, up to 150,000 citizen claims for compensation for property damage incurred in those 12 days. Once they recover (might take a lot of time to replenish their air defense), they could resume bombings, if Trump greenlights it.

Here are two good posts on the extent of Israeli damage from this war:

Highlights: up to 150K property claims, 30 highrise buildings in Tel Aviv condemned,...

Quote:

The Weizmann Institute, Israel's prestige export, lies in shards, 45 labs gone and $500 M in biomedical IP incinerated, pulling decades of grant pipelines and pharma partnerships off the table overnight. Intel's Kiryat Gat fabs froze mid-wafer, choking a supply chain that feeds 64 % of Israel's exports and 1/5 of its GDP; the high-tech sector now runs on skeleton crews because 300 000 reservists were yanked from R&D floors and data centers to guard empty runways at Tel Nof. Commercial flights halted twice at Ben Gurion, insurers jacked premiums, and foreign airlines rerouted around a country that once sold itself as the region's safe hub.

Capital is already in flight. More than 80 000 Israelis emigrated in 2024, the largest outflow since 1948, pushing the two-year total above 500 000 and forcing Netanyahu's cabinet to slap a travel ban on Jewish dual nationals to stem the leak. Investor confidence cratered: venture funds paused term sheets, construction sites stand idle, and mega-projects wait on credit that no longer clears. The finance ministry, staring at a deficit set to shove public debt past 75 % of GDP, begged for an extra $857 M in defence cash while slicing $200 M from hospitals and schools.

Analysts peg Israel's aggregate loss between $11.5 B and $17.8 B, up to 3.3 % of GDP, before counting long-tail hits from halted exports, cancelled IPOs, and sovereign-risk downgrades. Iran, still sitting on its uranium stockpile, spent a fraction of that yet forced the self-styled "Start-Up Nation" into a liquidity scramble, an insurance panic, and a brain-drain spiral. Tel Aviv promised deterrence; Tehran handed it a balance sheet in red ink and the visible stamp of strategic humiliation.

No. The Deep State means career bureaucrats who disagree with the policies of this admin and who use their position and the access to information it enables to undermine the administration by things like leaking information deemed contradictory or damaging. It's people who put their own interests and beliefs ahead of their duty to serve.

Yeah, like the 51 IC experts who were rounded up by the campaign manager to sign a statement about Hunter's laptop they knew was false.

This is so simple it's ludicrous. If you cannot abide by the policies of an admin you either work within the department to influence policy (advise re your area of expertise, and accept their decisions) or you resign. You do not actively work to undermine the administration by leaking info to members of the media who share your disdain for the admin.
