Not a forever war so we are good there and once again, Biden was criticized for how he ended things.

True, nothing lasts forever.

That said, is there a point where you would say that this has gone on for too long. When do you think it will end? When do you think it should end?

I'm no fan of the Iranian government. It would have been great if the people there had risen up after we took out what's his name (even if we had no right to do that). But it was unlikely to happen... and didn't. So now what?

That's a tough question, one to which I don't have a ready answer. All I can say is, the mess we have now, this is why you don't start crap like this unless it is much more thoroughly thought out in advance.

Huge mistake by Trump; maybe his worst one ever. I'm wondering how hard his generals tried to dissuade him.

To me "forever war" just means one without a clear goal that just keeps going on.

Iran seems to fit that description at that point. Whatever the original claimed goals were we seem to have pretty much given up on those and yet it goes on.

Trump just keeps making "stuff" up as he goes along.
Only devout Kool-Aid drinkers would believe this narrative.

Trump now claims Iran has already been denuclearized. So what was the point of the war?

3 months in, Afghanistan and Iraq weren't considered forever wars. The jury is still out about how long we'll be fighting Iran.

I heard that but I'm wondering if they were as vociferous as they might have been.

I notice Caine hasn't been on the mic lately (to the best of my knowledge). This is separate from what he may or may not have told Trump in Feb/March. Not much he can say now.

Before the War, typically 125 - 140 ships would pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day.

Nearly 80 per week since early May is laughable.

Traffic through Hormuz is going to be halted with the renewal of hostilities. Another month or two and the oil supply shock is going to be sizable.

I interrupt the all-important discussions on flagging, locking, ignoring and sock puppets (other threads) to note that President Trump said he plans on taking over the Strait of Hormuz and charging ships 20% (of the value of their cargo?) to pass through.

Where he thinks he has the right to do this, I'll never know. Maybe he got the authority from the President of FIFA.

Anyway, we seem to be back to square one, as we have already started to bomb the crap out of Iran again.

Do you think providing shipping protection is free? Should it be free? I mean a lot of these nations were paying off Iran to travel thru the Straight already..we know the UK was doing it. I mean they can pay nothing and go thru, they just won't have protection

The US can't protect ships transiting through Hormuz, I think the 20% toll is meant for those ships that pay Iran to go through and that the Iranians let through.

So Col. Bone Spur is going to block the Straits and charge 20% of the cargo. Hasn't Iran already closed the Straits and started charging fees? Col. Bone Spur is a super genius playing three dimensional checks while everyone else is playing checkers.

What fee collecting mechanism is Iran supposedly using?

The same one that they are talking to Oman about instituting. Didn't the administration say that there should be no fees charged, and yet they say they are going to charge 20%. What fee collecting mechanism are they going to use? Isn't that illegal? So Iran can't charge fees but we can? Per the Insurance Journal, Iran started charging ad hoc fees for going through the Straits as of March 25, 2026. The IRG wants to formalize the charges but, as of now they are being charged on a case by case basis. The mechanism and currency they are using to pay the $2 million per vessel is unknown at this time but, some vessels have made the payment.

When you find out the mechanism they are using please post and let me know and I will surely do the same.

Then, Trump got involved (and I mention Trump and Trump alone because this is 100% on him).

"Oil's top players are building their way around the Strait of Hormuz instead of waiting for the fight to end, Axios' Emily Peck writes.

Why it matters: Countries and companies are racing to move oil and gas out of the region without passing through the strait, the world's most important and vulnerable energy chokepoint.

Zoom in: Goldman Sachs analysts identified seven pipeline and infrastructure projects (under construction, planned or deemed feasible) that would allow oil to bypass the strait entirely.

The analysts found that new pipelines under construction or in the works could carry enough oil to replace more than 45% of what Gulf producers used to ship through the strait by the end of next year.

By the end of 2028, the number rises to more than 60%.

Between the lines: These projects could come together fast. Goldman found that similar pipelines have historically taken a median of 2 years to build and even quicker when built in response to a supply crisis."

That's great news. The current tension appears that international commercial ships are hugging the Oman coast to avoid paying Iran. Iran has tantrum and then attacks them. US responds by firing missiles at Iran. Iran responds by firing missiles at local US allies.
