This war has been very costly for Iran... but they ain't givin' up because they pretty much have us over a barrel (of oil!).

What's the latest, Trump wants to try the-mother-of-all-international-sanctions against Iran? Oops, he has pretty much alienated most of our allies. They're unlikely to do what he suggests now, why should they? They're getting a good chuckle out of this, lately, no doubt. At our expense.

We're low on ammo/missiles and fresh out of ideas. No end in sight. And Trump's bored of the whole mess.

Iran has absolutely no leverage. They do not have us over a barrel. Trump's not bored, he's out waiting Iran which is exactly why Iran has no leverage.

Iran has no leverage? The Strait of Hormuz is 90% shut down.

You are correct.

Iran has no leverage? The Strait of Hormuz is 90% shut down. Iran knows darn well what our missile-and-ammo situation is. They know darn well that we don't want to send in ground forces. And, unfortunately for the Iranian people, their government doesn't give a s*** about them, so if we bomb them some more, they could give a crap.

Nobody with any credibility whatsoever -- left, right, doesn't matter -- thinks this is going well for the US. We're just "lucky" it's happening thousands of miles from our borders (but that will change when they send some terrorists over here).

It's not 90% shut down and they have lost their primary source of income. They are dead in the water and have absolutely not leverage over this situation. They know they are screwed economically and have no shot of any win in this war.

I'm not saying Iran is doing well; their military has been degraded and they have suffered major losses. Why, look at those two schools we took out! But it's an asymmetric war: the definitions of what constitutes winning and losing are different for them than it might be for us. It's like in Vietnam, when we thought we were winning based on body count, but North Vietnam thought winning was surviving to be able to fight another day.

I'm not basing this on body count. I'm basing this on economic factors. Iran has no ability to survive this without capitulation. We do. That's not Iran winning. That's not Iranian leverage.

I can't speak for you, but I suspect that many Republican types who are still saying they support this war would not be saying it if the President was a Democrat. Any chance this applies to you, as well? Please take a moment to reflect before answering. It is a normal tendency to back "your guy" instead of admitting he's wrong. I'm sure I have done that myself.

Who are some knowledgeable folks who don't seem totally partisan who are saying this war is going well for us?

There is only so much that can be done with bombing. We have learned this repeatedly. Do we, at some point, send in ground troops? Gosh, we're getting closer and closer to the mid-term elections.

I am no fan of Iran. Whatsoever. I'm guessing that about half their citizens can't stand their repressive regime, but are just laying low so they don't get jailed or killed by the IRG. However, I don't see us as winning too many "hearts and minds" over there lately.

This has been a terrible move by Trump from the very beginning. Done for little reason, with little forethought.

I wish Trump didn't go to war. I've said this before here. I cannot change the fact that he did. I understand his reasoning but still would have chosen to avoid the war all together. Now that we are in the war, I almost fully support what has been done so far. We decimated their military, cut off their main supply of income, and created a stranglehold on their economy. All without putting boots on the ground. Iran's subsidiary groups are in shambles. Iran's economy is in shambles. Iran is holding on by a thread.

  • Access to dollars and U.S. banks: A foreign bank facilitating Iranian trade could lose access to the dollar-based financial system.
  • Access to the American market: Companies must decide whether Iranian business is worth risking their much larger U.S. operations.
  • Shipping and insurance: Sanctioned vessels can struggle to obtain insurance, financing, repairs, port access, and reputable crews.
  • Security relationships: Countries such as the UAE depend heavily on U.S. weapons, intelligence, investment, and diplomatic support.
  • Fear of future enforcement: Even before penalties are imposed, banks often "over-comply" because they do not want to become Washington's next example.
China probably won't fully comply simply because Washington asks. The United States would have to sanction major Chinese banks, ports, or state-owned energy companies to create genuinely powerful leverage. But that could provoke retaliation, disrupt trade and oil markets, and escalate the broader U.S. China confrontation.

More sanctions probably indicating that military option is off the table but aimed mostly at third countries- China , etc. But why should they comply?

China can retaliate against US capital and joint ventures in China, they can cause a stampede on treasuries and as you say thwart already fragile trade talks. Unlikely much more happens on sanctions than what has already happened.

We've also made allies angry with us for doing damage to their energy security and economies. And we've radicalized more Iranians and other Middle Easterners. And we have wasted countless military resources and dollars that could have been used on health care and infrastructure here. But Republican presidents have to have their wars.

You're looking at this in a microcosm. The full impact of this won't be known for years but it's already starting to look like the right decision and a win for Trump.

Oh only Republican presidents like war? Kosovo, Syria and Libya are calling.

We are no better off than we were 6-months ago.
The MOU is dead. There is no off ramp for Trump.

Umer Karim, a researcher at the University of Birmingham, said the problem is the goal posts have moved and progress will depend on one side caving to the other's interpretation of the deal.

"The old MOU is essentially dead in all aspects," he said. "The task of the mediators to have the two sides reach some sort of a compromise have become even more difficult in the current circumstances."

Iran is already caving, the walls are falling down around them. I love that Trump is "waiting" this out. Economic pressure will likely cause the last few dominoes to fall.

Lol at this being a win for Trump.

And Trump's Iran War is nothing like the other wars in Kosovo, Syria, and Libya. We didn't start any of those. 1 was peacekeeping, 1 we weren't in, and 1 we intervened only to stop Khaddafi from committing a massacre.

Even Bloomberg is starting to admit the truth. It's only going to get worse for Iran. They have lost all leverage and the world is moving on without them.

I love it, too!!! A lesser President than Donald J Trump would have tried to finish up this war at least a few months before the midterm elections. Fortunately, President Trump prioritizes "doing the right thing for the American people and the world" above petty political considerations! GOP lawmakers in swing districts need to understand this!
