It would be a terrible move, politically, to put fat tariffs on Colombian imports: Americans lost their s*** when the price of eggs and gas went up; imagine if it's their coffee and cocaine.

Trump understands that we have the strongest and most diverse economy in the world, and that means we will prevail in any economic disputes.

We are Columbia's largest trade partner; we actually have a trade surplus with them. They get refined petroleum from us.

Ask yourself this, who would take a bigger hit, the US with higher coffee prices or Columbia with higher gasoline prices? Easy answer. (it would actually be a double whammy for Columbia because they send us crude oil that we refine and send back. They would get a double tariff at the gas pump).

Part of the reason we are Colombia's largest trade partner is because before the recently elected president Petro they had a staunchly pro-American administration. Playing hardball with Petro is going to push them into China's arms, I wouldn't be surprised for example if China builds refineries there, they have been making major inroads into South America.

It works both ways.
It's not as "absolute" of a proposition as you make it.

The U.S. imports crude petroleum from Colombia which amounts to roughly $6 Billion.
Along with smaller amounts of refined petroleum products.

Coffee was next at $1.8 Billion.
Followed by cut flowers which amounted to $1.6 Billion.

We exported $5.3 Billion in refined petroleum products.
Followed by $1.0 Billion in corn and $766 million in Soybean meal.
The latter could be easily sourced from Brazil or Venezuela.

By the way, it's Colombia.
Not Columbia.

The US can survive a trade war with any individual country, true. But if you keep doing it over and over to everyone . . .

We still have a large trade imbalance with the EU, Canada, and other nations. It's very difficult for American companies to sell their products in Europe (like cars). Some of this may have evolved from the Marshall Plan.

What does the US import from Colombia? Trump threatens tariffs

Oh crap, I was the one that started with Columbian (since edited). And there was just a big deal about somebody from the White House spelling it that way.

Columbia is the university; Colombia is the country.

I was kind of making a joke about the "coffee and cocaine" thing, but it would be logical to assume that I'm Ignorant Bear, if I'm spelling the darn country wrong.

The Cartel stuff is great but in typical Taylor Sheridan tradition, he pads and ruins at least 40% of the series with the subplot about the ditzy ex wife and daughter. He ruined 1883 with a blonde young woman too. Does he sleep with them? Horrible actresses. Always blondes.

I don't know all the details, but generally, yes. What does the average murder convict serve now - 4 years?

We know that most of these individuals have clean records, and what constitutes violence can be overblown. Four years is plenty of time.

President Trump is truly moving at Warp Speed - but I hope at some point he would address the condition of the DC jails. Apparently they are horrendous, and the J6 hostages exposure to that may be what many experience. Mold on the walls, no mattresses, minimal blankets, etc.

Attorney William Shipley details Process violations for the J6 hostages, including violating Rule 20.
