The Republican Party holds overall control of the state's education system. The Governor, Lt. Governor, and House Speaker are all Republicans. They select the 9 members of the State Board of Education. The State Superintendent is appointed by the Board, but must be confirmed by the State Senate, which is also currently controlled by Republicans.

Local school boards and superintendents are chosen by the voters or city councils. Local leaders may be Republican, Democrat, or Independent. Stronger Democratic control is found in heavily populated urban areas and the Mississippi Delta, while rural areas skew heavily Republican. (courtesy of AI)

Apparently, it is working, for test scores at least.

Ole Miss is slowly beginning to vote a little like it did way back in Reconstruction after the end of the Civil War. In those days, thousands of Black men registered as Republicans, and went to the polls and sent two Black senators and the first Black congressman to Washington, and also elected or appointed some 226 Blacks to State government positions.

Regarding Mississippi schools: My first reaction is to desperately find a way to discount the "Mississippi Miracle".

Instead though, California ought to take a long look at what's going on there and see what we might borrow.

One challenge here in the Golden State is that we have a high percentage of non-native English speakers.
