Nah, Bush Jr was way worse- we are still dealing with his disasters. Trump is mostly inconsequential

I understand your point. Bush Jr was conventionally bad in an unmatched way in our lifetime. Trump is unconventionally bad in a way that threatens and weakens the Republic (attacking elections, atracking the media, copying up with dictators, grifting for billions of dollars).

Lots of people here voted for them 5 times and will claim to have good judgment.

Pretty much everything Trump has been done can be reversed.

Can be, but with concerted effort. First, MAGA has to be stopped. His crew will get away with the vast majority of what they've done. And the national debt going from $20 trillion to $40 trillion is no joke.

Debts come and go. Bush resulted in millions of dead, the Patriot Act, creation of Homeland Security and ICE, torture, spying on Americans, assassinations, chaos in the Middle East All of that has been institutionalized and with no consequences or legal action.

Other than the deaths, you could say all those things can be reversed. I suppose in the long run all 3 of Trump's Supreme Court picks will be "reversed". But in the long run we are all dead. It will take a generation to rebuild the institutional damage Trump has done.

None of Bush''s policies were or will be reversed because there is no political consensus to do so; just like there was no consensus to hold anyone accountable about leading the country into a phony war. Trump's damage is trivial by comparison and easily reversible

Can you give us an example of federal government debts going away? It seems like we've had never ending debt increases my entire lifetime. There was a brief period when Clinton had a surplus, but the debt didn't go away or even shrink much.

It's a sad state of affairs in BI OT when I look over the above and feel I have to add the words "federal government" to try and forestall the semantic hairsplitters from making a frivolous counter argument to derail what I was trying to say.

Brewers take Game 3 with 16 hits.

10 - 1

Exploded for 8 runs in the 5th inning ALL with 2 outs.
A World Series Record!

Gasser throws 6 shut out innings.
1 hit.

Not been done since Sandy Koufax.

Deficits don't go away, they mostly rise and fall. But deficits are always with us- killing a million plus people, trampling on liberties, spying on
Americans, starting a fake war, creating new agencies towards " homeland security," torture and assassinations; these are the legacy of the Bush administration which have made the US less free, less democratic, a willing participant in foreign wars and with more domestic repression by the federal government. All this endures with bi-partisan agreement.

I also think this election has zero to do with debt, nor is either party running or going to do anything about debt. Trump's party will lose because of inflation.

Okay, our foreign relations might be easy: "That was Trump; he was a one-off. Let's wipe the slate clean."

I remember that period. It was1998, and lasted until 2001. At the time Clinton and Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House worked hand in hand on it, and were successful in balancing the budget for the first time in years. They both took credit for it, because they had both worked so hard together to get it done. I naively thought that a new day was dawning in America. Perhaps if they both had stayed longer in office.......... Nah, the cynics would win again, as new politicians came to town, and the parties began attacking each other, seemingly worse than ever, egged on by a press that does the same, only more so. Helluva way to run a railroad.

Fiscal conservatives who probably voted for Bush / Trump five times always trying to take credit for Clinton's success. Clinton raised taxes on the rich and invested in the middle class (defeating Gingrich in the process) to balance the budget. Gingrich just happened to be there. The worst aspects of the Clinton Presidency were when he found common ground with Gingrich, for example in the deregulation that led to the 2008 fiasco and the trade status with China.

Morality is entirely subjective. Many would argue Biden was the lowest tier of morality when he wasn't even actually acting as president. Or when he flooded the borders. Or when he and his team skirted the democratic system and put Kamala in as the dem candidate.

A brain dead President and the government assures us he's sharp as a tack until a presidential debate.

Take a look at what polls say about our institutions, they've been on the skids for a long time, our " democracy" as well.

I think there is a significant difference between the two sides. Not to say that the Dems always occupy the moral high ground... referring more to policies. In terms of morality, though, we've reached a new low with DJT.

I get that InstitutionalistBear is an entirely different poster.

Morality is entirely subjective. Many would argue Biden was the lowest tier of morality when he wasn't even actually acting as president. Or when he flooded the borders. Or when he and his team skirted the democratic system and put Kamala in as the dem candidate.

I'm pretty sure Biden's team wanted him to be the candidate, not Kamala. The rest of the party coalesced around her as the best option, given the short runway.

I don't remember Biden or his team speaking out against it as the leader of the democratic party

Not so sure.

Okay, our foreign relations might be easy: "That was Trump; he was a one-off. Let's wipe the slate clean."

The tariffs? Just reverse then. Same with spending priorities.

But ethical standards, selfless behavior and respect for institutions seem like they are easy to degrade but hard to build back up.

Once he stepped out of the race he was no longer the leader of the party. And let's not be cute and act like he stepped down entirely of his own accord. It was intense pressure from everyone else that got him to step down.

Not to mention the purging of good people working in our institutions. Good people aren't so easily replaced.
Tell me about it. That's been my work place for the last 18+ my months. Most of the good experienced people were purged. There's been a reliance on automation and AI and things have suffered somewhat.

The funny thing is that once it became clear we were critically understaffed, we had a hiring spree and now we have more people in my office than in all the 20+ years I've been here. The new hires are good, but it'll be several years until they've matured to the level of our old staff.

That wasn't "skirting the democratic system", it was just politics. Can be compared to Mitch McConnell's "reorganizing" the Supreme Court (which I hated because he totally got over on us, the SOB... wish the SOB had been our SOB).

So if we're going to talk about morality and protecting the democratic system then we should also talk about the degrees of difference between swapping out a party nominee because the existing one has either dropped out or been incapacitated and trying to overturn the results of the actual final vote.
