I had to finally watch the special after hearing about the criticism on his trans remarks for two weeks. I've never found Chappelle that funny as a stand up comedian (loved the Chappelle Show), and this one is no different. But the small but loud outrage machine is demanding I be offended. Ho hum.

It's weird how the non-apology apology has pervaded our culture.




Anyways, SNL is stuck between a rock and a hard place. The dude has made homophobic jokes attacking one of SNL's gay writers, who is close to Lorne Michaels.

They could keep him. And it would be awkward (especially with 2 gay cast members).

But if they fire him, there will be shouts of "cancel culture." And Trump will be outraged. And it would really boost this guy's career even though his comedy "risks" = racism.

In 2015, SNL hired a standup comedian named Jon Rudnitzky. He was the only hire that year. He was young, a 2012 graduate of USC (below is his commencement speech). He was barely on the show and was dumped after one season. And his career has continued to be low-profile. Maybe it's better they go that route.



Lorne Michaels is a Republican Trump supporting guy who has tended to favor white guys (I remember one year when they hired 5 white guys out of 6 new cast members). That's why it took him 44 years to hire a fully Asian cast member. But in recent years, he's sort of come around to diversity. They had 5 black cast members last year. Chris Rock convinced him to hire Leslie Jones five years ago. Fred Armisen convinced him to produce a Mexico City-set Spanish-language HBO series. He hired a Latina cast member for the first time 3 years ago.

(Of course, conservatives are gonna say, why should representation matter? Well, 1 out of every 4 Americans is either Latino or Asian. But that has not been reflected in TV, movies and especially SNL.)

It's weird. A lot of this guy's defenders were saying comedy was about outrage. And I get it. I watched the Alec Baldwin roast this morning. And saying outrageous even ethnic/racial/gay jokes are funny. This is not what this guy was doing. He was using the C-word in a demeaning way about Asians and repeatedly using it. Like a lot.

If he used the N word in the same way, it wouldn't even be an issue. He'd be a goner last week. If he called Dave Chappelle, whose wife is Asian, a N-word who loves C-words. It wouldn't be an issue.

If he told jokes mocking 9/11 victims, it wouldn't be an issue.
