While I actually enjoy sports in which the OBJECTIVE is fighting, they way they just let the hockey players continue to fight like that just drains the sport of credibility, for me. Can you imagine this happening in other sports? With the refs just standing there while guys duke it out, it makes it look like professional wrestling. It's a joke.

I've had hockey fans try and explain it to me, but I don't get it.
The ref's don't want to get hit by an errant punch. They let the fight continue until the players tire out before they jump in and separate the players.

I don't think that's the reason. If the penalty were one year suspension for hitting a ref, even with an errant punch, they wouldn't get hit. What kind of fine/penalty will that Wilson guy get? I guarantee you it would be much greater in any other sport (especially seeing the graphic that fighting is business-as-usual for him, i.e. multiple offender).

I admittedly don't "get" hockey, but I'm thinking that the brawls are considered part of the show in the NHL. College hockey is big back East and I'm assuming they don't fight like that.

I see them do that and it just makes me think that the whole thing is a joke (even though I know it's not and is a highly skilled sport). Again, I enjoy boxing, (real) wrestling, martial arts and sometimes MMA, where I know that that's the objective.
Having played and referred hockey for many years, including college hockey, I can attest that you really do not want to get in the middle of a fight. The ref watches the fight to assign the penalties and the two linesman will break up the fight when it is safe to do so. If more than one fight is going on how are you going to break it up with only two people? Fighting usually does not last long (it is really tiring) so let the players get it out of their system.

Fighting in hockey is less common than it used to be in the NHL. Quite often it is retaliatory from a cheap shot on a star player or goalie.

It is a highly skilled game and watching it on TV does not do it any justice. It is MUCH better live, especially college hockey. One of my favorite rivalries is Cornell vs. Harvard. They hate each other and the games are really exciting when you can attend in person. Cal vs. $tanfurd was also fun to watch at Berkeley Iceland (sorry it is no longer exists).

Why is it that, in other sports, opponents are not allowed to duke it out for awhile because (allegedly) it wouldn't be safe for the refs to break it up?

And, asking out of ignorance, to what extent is fighting allowed in college hockey? Youth hockey?
I don't know the extent of fighting in youth hockey these days but when I was playing it did not occur very often. In college hockey fights do happen but not that often. Major junior hockey in Canada (and the Northern part of the US), which still produces many NHL players, is where fighting occurs.

Hockey is quite different than football, basketball in that contact is more prevalent which leads to heated situations that can lead to fights. Fighting is not ALLOWED (contrary to what you believe) but it does happen. If fighting was allowed then why do they penalize it? The NHL rules could be changed to completely eliminate fighting but the NHL has not taken that step. Having the refs jump into a fight is NOT going to stop fighting. I am not asking you to agree with the rules, just trying to point them out to you. If you don't like the sport, don't watch it...its your choice (I find golf boring with no purpose so I don't watch it).

Maybe if they let fights "happen" in golf we would both watch it more!

John Daly's career might have been much better.

"Nobody hits 73 home runs in a season without assistance. Nobody wins five straight Tours de France. And in a sport like horse racing ... maybe it's simply too much to expect a guy to win a record seven Derbies between 1997-2021. without beating other cheaters at their own game." The final sentence by the Fox host - talk about putting words in someone's mouth! Geezo.

"You're hear to say, Bob Baffert's team did not cheat to win the Kentucky Derby."
This was after Baffert tried to blame a "different America". Host is like, "no, no, let me show you how it's done!"

How is this for foreshadowing:

An event sponsored by a cheater, won by a cheater, and then the sponsor craters after 2 years because of the fiscal incompetence of the cheater.

Takeaway: Ban the winner for life; Elect the sponsor POTUS

"32 years ago today, Donald Trump's first Tour de Trump cycling race concluded in Atlantic City.

The backdrop: The 837-mile race was intended to become America's version of the Tour de France. The '80s was a high point for the sport in the U.S. and NBC Sports signed on to telecast the event.

The race featured 10 stages across five states, beginning in Albany, New York and finishing in front of Trump's Atlantic City hotel and casino.
114 riders from 15 countries competed, including Greg LeMond, who had recently become the first American to win the Tour de France.
The big picture: Trump's namesake race lasted just two years thanks largely to his empire's billions of dollars of debt. DuPont became the main sponsor in 1991 and the "Tour DuPont" lasted until 1996.

The final two editions of the race were won by a young rising star from Texas. His name? Lance Armstrong." Axios

All lies

In a brief press conference after the vote, the new leadership team claimed that their conference is unified. Stefanik thanked Trump for his support.

"He is a critical part of our Republican team," she said. "The American people are suffering under the far-left radical socialist policies of President Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In just over 100 days, we have an economic crisis, we have a border crisis and we have a national security crisis."

A couple of weeks ago when I was walking my dog there was a young man walking a few hundred yards ahead of me. A white Tesla pulls away from the curb a couple of hundred feet ahead of him and drives up to him and stops. He gets in the driver's seat and drives off. He was driving the car with a phone app.

*I found this when I returned from the walk:

"Tesla owners who purchased the Full Self-Driving option on their car received it as part of the version 10 software update that went out last week. Using just a smartphone, you can "summon" your car to you from a maximum distance of 200 feet, as long as the car is within your line of sight.Sep 30, 2019"

A few years ago, don't remember how many, a guy in Pacific Heights was having his Tesla serviced in his driveway by the remote Tesla mechanic. We stopped and spoke with him. When the mechanic finished the owner "pulled" his Tesla back into the garage using the app while standing there talking with us.
