Interesting story. Those aren't the only large urban cities with big cats. Back in the early 1970s, my Boy Scout troop was camped out in Redwood Regional Park, which was inside the city limits of Oakland. The kid I was sharing a tent with woke me up about 4 AM because he heard a weird snuffling noise like someone with bad asthma. I heard it too. It wandered through our camp and at one point went right by our tent. We were too scared to look outside. Finally it seemed to be getting further away, so we got our courage up and poked our heads out of the tent. We saw what looked like the back end of a big lion about 50 feet away and we dived back into our tent. It seemed huge but we decided it had to be a mountain lion. Later we learned a couple of the other scouts heard it too but went back to sleep. We talked to a park ranger and he said they had occasional reports of mountain lions but no confirmed sightings since the 1920s. I expect they were always higher up in the hills and wandered down into the park at times. Since mountain lions are nocturnal and the park is closed at night (except for a few overnight campers once in a while), they rarely got seen. It probably smelled our food.

Good article.
I was surprised to hear in 1898 an elected politician calling for lynching of black men. Insane rhetoric!

I found this Medal of Honor recipient story particularly interesting:

"Dwight W. Birdwell, an Army specialist, helped to drive back as many as 1,000 enemy troops during an assault on a Saigon base during the Tet offensive in January 1968, using his tank's machine gun and his own M16. After being wounded and ordered onto a medevac helicopter, Mr. Biden recounted, Mr. Birdwell slipped out the other side of the helicopter to continue fighting.

After returning to the United States from Vietnam, Mr. Birdwell, a member of the Cherokee nation, started a law firm and later served for 12 years on the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court."

"MIAMI Shohei Ohtani made history once again, becoming the sixth pitcher since earned runs became official to have 10 strikeouts and zero earned runs in three straight starts. He also became the first player to have 10 strikeouts, two RBI and a stolen base in a single game.

Wild stat: The Angels are 5-1 since the start of June with Ohtani on the mound, and 6-21 when anyone else starts." Axios

The Most Pathetic Men in America - The Atlantic

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/07/kevin-mccarthy-lindsey-graham-trump-devotion-2024-election/661508/

"Trump said and did obviously awful and dangerous things racist and cruel and achingly dumb and downright evil things. But on top of that, he is a uniquely tiresome individual, easily the sorest loser, the most prodigious liar, and the most interminable victim ever to occupy the White House. He is, quite possibly, the biggest crybaby ever to toddle across history's stage, from his inaugural-crowd hemorrhage on day one right down to his bitter, ketchup-flinging end. Seriously, what public figure in the history of the world comes close? I'm genuinely asking.

Bottom line, Trump is an extremely tedious dude to have had in our face for seven years and running. My former New York Times colleague David Brooks wrote it best: "We've got this perverse situation in which the vast analytic powers of the entire world are being spent trying to understand a guy whose thoughts are often just six fireflies beeping randomly in a jar…..

Without the complicity of the Republican Party, Donald Trump would be just a glorified geriatric Fox-watching golfer….

Like Vladimir Putin, Trump will take what people let him take. He will do what he can get away with. The courage and character of Ukraine stands in perverse contrast to America's cowering Republican Party, whose resistance might as well have been led by the Uvalde police.…

My mind roils with thought experiments of what else Republicans could tolerate from him: What if Mike Pence had been hanged? One would hope it would have been disqualifying, but who knows? Right now, the two most likely people to be sworn into office on January 20, 2025, are Joe Biden and Donald Trump (requisite "to be sure" here about all the variables age, health, jail sentence, etc.). Best-case scenario: Trump loses, his inevitable attempt to cheat the result is unsuccessful, and no one dies this time. And then America sails off again into the future with 109-year-old Joe Biden at the helm. Sigh."

Yet another devastating takedown of Trump and his acolytes.

Regarding his hypothetical, "What if Mike Pence had been hanged?" It has many times occurred to me that a great response to the rioters/insurrectionists would have been to have Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence come out, arms locked, and face them (make sure the cameras were rolling). Worst-case scenario, they die, but it would be as martyrs, getting all the virgins that martyrs allegedly get. Anyway, that would have been high enough on the "drastic measures scale" to have maybe made an impact. Maybe...

If Mike Pence would have been martyred, he would have literally died for America's sins and our nation would be redeemed and on its way to salvation. It would have perfectly fit into his religious beliefs.

I view it as a missed opportunity. I wonder if he and "mother" see it that way.

*In your scenario, I hope Pelosi would at least have the common decency to wear her Italian beach attire.

Looks like another "crime" leveled at Antifa/BLM was a false flag. This one was also insurance fraud for a Trumper. Maybe he'll get the presidential medal of freedom if a Republican becomes president.
