Trump totally deserves a comparison to Hitler for the simple reason two or three of his lads, aides, are in fact NAZIS; Bannon, Miller, Gorka. And they've pulled directly from the Nazi playbook to use America.

Well since the same National Socialist German Workers' Party does not exist, he can not be a Nazi technically.

But, if watching Miller speak--his values, cadence, arguments, vernacular, use of propaganda, and even body language--and knowing for what he argues and the positions he holds (white supremacy and authoritarianism), if the parallels to Goebbels and other Nazi mouthpieces do not gob smack you, then either you do not know how to read people or history, are blindly partisan or contrarian, or don't know how analogies work.

Trying to be smug about "there you go with the Nazi argument" (Godwin) or how do you KNOW he's a Nazi, misses the point and danger intentionally.

Again, the COMPARISON (meaning there are important similarities not that they are identical) is with the rise of the regime and the ways in which citizens normalized, excused, and stood idle. It's about us. This is not an analysis of Hitler or Trump as Hitler. You've changed the subject.

The original quote was a call to citizens (the GOP) to stand up and not repeat the mistakes of the past that LEAD to atrocities when political interests or indifference enables the continued rise of an authoritarian regime that in turn ENDS in a Hitler and his being the greatest murderer in history. Before Hitler was the "greatest evil murderer" there were his followers believing he was making Germany great again and that he would NEVER end up destroying the country and tearing down all semblance of decency and culture and values. You can poo-poo the comparison all you want, but maybe the people around you sounding the warnings are not idiots and it might be better to be cautious rather than ignore the compounding evidence.

Tonight the Turks and Russians invade the Kurdish areas in Syria and tonight the U.S. betrayal of an ally who fought side by side with U.S. Special Forces for almost 20 years will begin. Republicans must be proud that the Idiot in Chief is the standard bearer of their party. What does this say about this country and its promises to its "allies"?

"How horrible, fantastic, incredible it is that we should be digging trenches and trying on gas-masks here because of a quarrel in a far away country between people of whom we know nothing.

Since this board is as far left as a board can get and since many of the conservatives here do not support Trump, I question your purpose in engaging in your soap box grandstanding here, especially making the trite comparison to Hitler. This seems like you wanting to show how special you are instead of actually expecting any results with your post.

I love how the right wingers, RWNJs and conservatives LOVE to mince words and define Nazi in such specific and confined terms...as in but I *AM* not a Nazi.

Okay so you RWNJs are Nazi adjacent, junior Nazis or Nazi-Lite. BFD...same shtt, same smell.

Look bub, Nazi is the same as white nationalist, KKK, proud boy, racist authoritarianism...all things Trump and his minions Miller, Bannon and Gorka support. All these are white identity and hate groups and there are Trump staffers and consultants who align.

Here's something to ponder, more than one thing can be true at the same time. A person like me can post on these boards AND be politically active in other ways too. I can write letters to newspapers and government officials. I can attend rallies and protests. I can contribute to causes. I can engage in conversations with people. AND I can post here. The most important we thing we can all do is NOT be silent. Even preaching to the choir is a form of pushing back and emboldening us all as we talk to other people and take other action. I find it re-charging to get positive feedback here and to hear other smartly worded discussion of the dangers of Trump.

Do you really think that it's a waste of time for us to discuss things you disagree with, or that we agree with each other? Does this mean that you never talk to your conservative friends or listen to conservative media--because it's just (as has been crassly stated here) a "big c@rcle jerk"?

You may take issue with some of the things stated here, but the expressions of protest here are part of a much bigger picture that are protecting you and the Trump supporters from themselves.

As for "Nazis on this board," that's such a cartoon way of engaging in a serious question. As I stated the Nazi party no longer exists, so of course there are not literal Nazis. There are however a spectrum of behavior and belief and defense of evil that is parallel to the rise of every destructive movement in human history. Rather than mocking those who are cautious and alarmed, a better response would be to self-examine and be just as vigilant and VOCAL in the criticisms of assaults on our Democracy and basic human decency. Remember, a "Nazi" isn't an Orc from the Lord of the Rings born of black magic from the mud of the Earth, they are ordinary citizens of a Democracy who let their own bigotry, or silent complicity, or greed empower sociopaths to take a once great country to barbarism. How many Nazis thought they were Nazis? How many after WWII said they were Nazis? So yes, the views and opinions of many on this board make me believe that they are de facto Nazis--meaning persons who in the time of Hitler would have capitulated or contributed to the rise of that regime and are doing the same now with Trump.

Is it really more important to make sure that the Liberals on this board don't think they're so "special" (by your assessment) or is it maybe more important to state your agreement that it is the President who is not so special or above the law or a real threat to our Constitution and country. The small steps of normalizing the slide to evil is the evil itself.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a socialist.

History is playing out again, are we Americans actually strong and decent enough and is our form of government durable enough to stop it. Each citizen needs to take a stand. Is Trump's next step some form of declaring Marshall Law or war time powers of the executive...? So Conservatives need to stop worrying so much about Liberals thinking they might have been right, and admit that they were wrong and join the fight against what is happening before it is too late.

Getting back to the original premise of the article:

Quote:

Turkish troops and their Syrian rebel allies attacked Kurdish militia in northeast Syria on Wednesday, pounding them with air strikes and artillery before launching a cross-border ground operation that could transform an eight-year-old war.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-syria-security-turkey-usa/turkey-launches-ground-assault-on-syrias-kurds-republicans-turn-on-trump-idUSKBN1WO05Z

I don't know of anyone that supports Trump on this move, and the damage to American alliance-building, deal-making and foreign policy options (both future and present) are damaged for a long time. This will create a more unstable world and promote international conflict.

Further, why increase military spending (when the US already dwarfs the next several countries on most money spent) when all you are going to do with that bigger and badder military is withdraw the US from a leadership position.

The comparison to Nazi's specifically and fascists generally has been overused historically. That doesn't mean a comparison is never apt. And that is why the comparison should be used sparingly. Calling George Bush a fascist is stupid.

I am not saying Trump is a fascist and I'm not saying Republicans are fascists. It is, however, appropriate to draw comparisons to early fascism. There is a road to fascism. We know what the start of that road looks like. As a country we have had tacit agreement that we don't set foot on that road even if it may personally benefit us. Because there has always been a historical understanding that you can't always control events when you head in that direction. No one really knows how far you can go down that road without finding your way back. Most people in Germany did not see the murder of millions as being the end of the road they were travelling.

Trump is the first one that just runs down that road with zero concern for what it means. As long as it is good for him, he doesn't care. Many Republicans protested at first, but once they saw their livelihoods at risk, they either shrank in fear or they convinced themselves that it was better not to stand up because someone who lets him do what he wants but know it is wrong is somehow better than someone who just thinks it is right.

WWII was made more terrible because Chamberlain was afraid of a bully and thought somehow placating him at every turn would keep Britain safe. WWII was ultimately won because Churchill knew that Britain was not safe and knowing that Britain might lose he stood up to the bully. The longer you wait to do something the harder the fight.

Trump may not be leading America to fascism, but he is certainly showing how it would be done.

I don't disagree. The insipid part about fascism (authoritarian capitalism) isn't the economic philosophy (capitalism) but the authoritarianism in which the state controls behavior, belief and speech. From that perspective, fringe element of the left reflect tendency for authoritarianism as well (e.g., controlling behavior and punishing others for not confirming to the desired speech or beliefs). The other side of fascism is Bolshevism (authoritarian socialism). Calling out Trump (who shows a strong desire for authoritarianism) and not calling out the far left who demonstrate the same desire to control beliefs and speech is unbalanced.

So, if you really believe we are in so much danger, what are you really doing about it? Congratulations on posting that on the board where 99.9% of those think like you.
You say 99.9% of the people that post here think like leftists. Yet there are at least 5 or 6 people that think like you, Calbear93. SOMETHING MUST BE TERRIBLY WRONG WITH OUR FORUM SOFTWARE! There should be 5,000 to 6,000 leftists to balance out Calbear93 and his like minded folks. I'm only seeing a small fraction of the 5,000 to 6,000 leftists! Where are their posts! Something must be done about the silenced majority!
Wow, you completely missed the point. If I thought there was true and immediate danger from the far left and I wanted to make an impact, I probably wouldn't post in the Fox News cesspool forum about why I don't like the left. Of course, if you think preaching to the choir is the most impact you can have in the face of such great danger, bless your heart.

You dramatize the immediate danger and argue that the conservatives must change. And you do so in a far left forum. I can't wait to see all the good you are doing to ameliorate the danger you speak of.

Since this board is as far left as a board can get and since many of the conservatives here do not support Trump, I question your purpose in engaging in your soap box grandstanding here, especially making the trite comparison to Hitler. This seems like you wanting to show how special you are instead of actually expecting any results with your post.
If you think this board is as far left as a board can get, I could show you a thing or two on the internet
Yeah, I don't think I would want to see the weird websites you frequent.

Seriously why all the talk about the far left boogiemen when the far right has the presidency and is basically telling the American people to take the constitution and shove it the next person's butt and FCCK democracy.

Are you lads forgetting Trump pulled an unilateral, solo decision about Syria that is both authoritarian and rather stupid for American interests?

Why the focus on the left when the current extreme right is doing the damage. Anyone who doesn't believe Trump's Syria move was a major mistake...raise your hand, then defend your position.

The other side of fascism is Bolshevism (authoritarian socialism). Calling out Trump (who shows a strong desire for authoritarianism) and not calling out the far left who demonstrate the same desire to control beliefs and speech is unbalanced.

Trump is the actual President. It's entirely reasonable to call him out more often than some fringe elements on the left.

So you won't call out the wave of authoritarianism demonstrated by those in power on the left (the Squad) until they have even more power? Most of Never Trumpers like me called out his authoritarian tendencies even when he was running. Where is your outrage for those on the left? Is the objection a matter of principle or a matter of political party?

Explain to me how The Squad is authoritarian.
Controlling speech and behavior. Calling for economic ruin of anyone who does not obey their mandate on how we should behave. Trying to destroy the reputation (including those in her own party) if they happen to disagree. Inciting a mob of their blind followers to harass and bully people into professing what they mandate is the right thing to say and believe.

Even those who are more along the lines of liberalism as opposed to authoritarianism are calling out this cancel culture and bullying tactics on the left.

What laws or other legal actions have they proposed that would restrict the speech of those they disagree with?

I'll be honest, most of this seems like alarmist silliness. "Being mean to people who disagree" is not authoritarianism. There needs to be a more concrete threat than hurting your feelings.
