Once we have them under government subsidies, the industries will all die off and then they will have to receive government subsidies. Then they'll have to apply for jobs under our new Communist structure.GBear4Life said:
I understand what Dems are trying to do, but they act as if the working people don't have employers who have to operate and succeed to pay them. If you want to lament that this is the paradox of capitalism, have at it. That's a discussion that is worth having - but it's separate from the issue. There are also varying degrees of how and why to help big business.
Yeah, sure, your sarcastic title about Democrats lacking compassion for the working man was perfectly civil.LMK5 said:Can't you have a single discussion without getting the claws out? Why are you so thin-skinned?AunBear89 said:

The piece says that the parties are still negotiating deals on a bill that both sides can agree on. Democrats are voting against McConnell's attempts to bring the Republican bill to the floor before these negotiations are complete. That part just seems like political games, trying to "win" news cycles and whatnot. I think it's dumb, but it probably doesn't mean anything to the ultimate substance of the bill that does get passed.AunBear89 said:

As liberals, many of you probably like these ideas but they have no business being crammed into this desperately needed aid bill. It's pure, bull*&%* shameless politics, trying to take advantage of a crisis to help them gain further political strength.Quote:
1. Corporate pay statistics by race and race statistics for all corporate boards at companies receiving assistance
2. Bailing out all current debt of postal service
3. Required early voting
4. Required same day voter registration
5. 10k bailout for student loans
6. For companies accepting assistance, 1/3 of board members must be chosen by workers
7. Provisions on official time for union collective bargaining
8. Full offset of airline emissions by 2025
9. Greenhouse gas statistics for individual flights
10. Retirement plans for community newspaper employees
11. $15 minimum wage at companies receiving assistance

Problem is that on the county level, the documentation processing is probably very doable even with people working from home. On the national level, it would massively delay getting the money out quickly. But the federal officials are already doing a good enough job delaying the assistance getting out, so I bet that we have record turnover in Congress and the Senate in 2022 at minimum and maybe even 2020 if they really piss people off.Anarchistbear said:
Santa Clara County's program is a model of what this should look like:
Eligibility Criteria & How to Apply
To qualify for financial assistance, a household must meet 3 criteria:
You must be a resident of Santa Clara County
Your household income must be less than 80% of the average median income (see table below)
You must have a documented loss of income related to COVID-19 impacts due to health, employment, or school/child care closures
Size of Household Maximum Income
1 person $72,750
2 people $83,150
3 people $93,550
4 people $103,900
5 people $112,250
6 people $120,550
7 people $128,850
8 people $137,150
Eligible households will receive direct financial assistance, based on documented loss of income as a result of COVID-19 impacts (maximum of $4,000 per month). Assistance may be requested once per month for the duration of the public health emergency, as long as the household continues to experience an economic impact and funds are available. Basic information and referral to area services will also be available for households.

I don't have a dog in this fight (independent, hate Trump), but the fact is that between the Senate Bill and the House Bill, the Democrats have crammed more off-topic pork in to critical life-or-death, historic, urgent legislation the GOP has. Is there anything comparable to stuff like this in the Republican bill (seriously, I'd love to know):
$35M for the JFK Center?
$300M for the National Endowment for the Arts
$300M for the National Endowment for the humanities
$100M for NASA (I love space research more than most, but don't get the urgency to fund them)
And then almost $300M additional for the IRS. That one is debatable as they have a $12B operating cost but what are they going to do with it?
That's $1B that could be used to offer a product and production bounties to medical device and biotech companies.
I have two small businesses that are on track to get killed by this thing. Am working on layoff plans right now and trying to structure credit facilities (futile, credit markets are carnage).
Dems are out of touch. It just appears to be madness. I wish we could make every politician have to start and run a business for a month and realize a) it's very hard and b) employers aren't evil.
