This scenario is exactly why we can't have armed citizens behaving as vigilantes. No one knows who is a criminal and who isn't, not even the police.
Even now we aren't sure if this kid was a criminal or not. What if the police or some other armed person who heard that he shot someone had gunned him down?
Adding more guns to these situations is not the answer.

Also, it should be noted that the first man killed is on video assaulting another individual prior to his death.

While fleeing a second time, establishing self defense, he fell and was hit in the head with a skate board. He fired once. When a man approached with a hand gun pointed at him, he aimed his rifle, but didn't shoot. The handgun man raised his arms and the shooter lowered his rifle. However the handgun man continued to approach and was shot in the arm.

I've acknowledged that self-defense may be applicable. The prior records of the victims is wholly irrelevant as it had no bearing on the situation. This poor, confused, allegedly dimwitted kid had no idea who they were or what they had done in the past. It didn't play into his decision-making. A 17-year old with an AR-15 has no business being out after curfew. I'm not sure there is ever a good time for a 17-year old to be walking down a street with an AR-15 but that's America for you.
If you read the complaint against the killer, there are a lot of facts that need to be proven, and he will have an opportunity to avail himself of his affirmative defenses, including self-defense. It's not quite so simple to conclude that he was entitled to shoot people after retreating, because it would still need to be a reasonable use of deadly force. According to a journalist who provided a lot of the probably cause for the arrest, the kid didn't know how to handle his weapon, but, as they say, this is the price of freedom in America.
What I can say for sure is that if it's true his mother knew he illegally possessed an AR-15, she should have culpability here. If she drove him to Kenosha and permitted him to be out after curfew, she should have some culpability here. The police who encouraged him and other militia members to patrol the streets with long guns after curfew, they should certainly have some culpability here. This is an incredibly messed up situation. This boy was failed by so many adults (including whoever is responsible for radicalizing him) and the result is that 2 people are dead and this kid's life, limited though it was for a school dropout with the issues he had, is probably forever ruined. Other than being a hero to other radicalized mall cop militia, there doesn't seem to be a lot of upside.
EDITED TO ADD: I think you know this, but just because some unarmed dude taunts someone else to shoot them, isn't a defense to murder.
This will be a fascinating trial and I sincerely hope that laws will change in this country following the conclusion. Not hard to imagine that this will make enough people realize it's a bad idea for minors to be able to open carry assault rifles in our streets, as they can in many states. Let alone the fact that adults can and do.
