I definitely an grasp the concept of increasing the fan base and maximizing revenue. I also understand the RPI game, and have pointed out why playing an away game against a team with high winning percentage would boost our RPI. High RPI gets us a better seed, or into the tournament, which in turn boost fandom. So, chill on that point.
If we are going to play an away game now and then, as we should (no?) then why not someone so local, making it less time consuming?
What I do not understand is the financial dealings. For instance, how much $ can Cal get by playing at Oklahoma, at Oral Roberts, at Hawaii, at St. Marys? How much do we have to pay Any of those teams to come to Cal?
How much in ticket sales do we get from hosting a game? How much does it cost us to host a game? What is the net?
There is definitely a collection of numbers involved that go into such a decision and that needs to be weighed against the RPI gain plus the ordeal (which is easy for St. Marys).
Without such numbers, it's really hard to evaluate. I assume it's strong in favor of not playing there, otherwise, we'd be doing it. All the top teams avoid such games, by in large, playing a ton of nonconference at home. So, I take your word for it.
But, geez, guys, don't be so chicken about playing in front of 3500 rabid fans. Just go beat them. End of story.
And if you want in, you can get a ticket!
