the biggest misconception about cal basketball is that coach martin (who played in the nba & was coached by gene keady plus he's a smart guy, he not a dumb azz) didn't understand offensive schemes compared to coach montgomery (which is an unfair comparison vs arguably the greatest strategist the game has ever seen, the bears ability to score after timeouts on schemed in bound plays under mike was ******* unreal)...cuonzo told me & his prospective recruits that as long as they played very physical man to man nba level d, he would let them improvise/free lance nba style on o...that's the sobering reality of today's college recruiting & failure to understand this will result in non nba level players on a roster

I do not want to remotely criticize a kid who has nothing to do with the situation, especially on hearsay evidence that I have no way to verify. This is a response to you. A 3.67 at PHS coupled with "solid" test scores does not get you within 10 miles of getting accepted at Cal. Further, what you were asking of them was not only unethical and unwise, it is literally illegal. I'm sure he is a decent kid and I'm sure if he applied he was accepted at another UC.

I have no way of knowing whether that influenced Martin's decision as you claim. (I suspect the much higher salary that we were never going to match was the deciding factor) but if he expected automatic entry for all his kids into the school whether or not they are close to matching the academic profile of an admit, he can GTFO. If he was effectively recruiting for Missouri while still our coach, he can GTFO really hard.

Not that I am accepting that any of that is true, but I am saying that anyone who cites this fact pattern at Cal that needs to be changed needs to find someone else to root for. We are a public university serving the people of California, not a basketball team with a university attached. I guarantee if you put it to a vote of faculty or of students or of alums or of the taxpayers of California, the idea of admitting the basketball coach's son just to make him happy is going to lose overwhelmingly. You either need to accept that or move on to an organization that is more aligned with your principles

I will say I am of two minds here on Zo's son. That is a slippery slope. But the program would be better off.

Full disclosure - I was a faculty brat and my dad, brought in more in grants most years (and thus the 45% "overhead" charge from the univeristy) than the BB program makes on its narrowly defined Net. That isn't unique. But faculty kids get NO special dispensation from admissions (whereas they would at a decent number of other institutions - including the CSU system that gives them a SIGNIFICANT price cut). Once you start doing that I don't know where you draw the line and it feels like Martin shouldn't have complained _IF_ (and this could be a big IF) Williams was upfront and honest about it. I would not be shocked (at all) if that wasn't the case and Martin felt bait and switched by the time his son was applying....or he could have been frustrated as the full effects of Ward Connerly's prop 209 became clear and how that creates a significant variance between UC (and California at large) and every other state in the country.

I agree with that EXCEPT - and this is a bit of an interesting debate - UC is an outlier here. As noted above, CSU provides a SIGNIFICANT benefit to faculty/staff kids. Many other schools around the country do. Then lets add on Prop 209 - which means that whereas the Martin's saw their son likely wooed like crazy by other institutions, Cal's hand were tied (for good or ill).

Now I am not saying that Cal should change. But I do think a full debate should acknowledge that when one aligns with Cal's "values" that puts it at odds with most of the rest of higher education.

1. Cal's hands are barely tied by 209. They easily accept applications from socioeconomically disadvantaged students with far lower gpa's and test scores. In fact a big impact of 209 was that changes UC had to make to get around it forced them to factor in economics a lot more. Prior most of Cal's affirmative action admits were wealthy minorities whose disadvantages were questionable. That probably does make it harder to use a diversity policy to admit the kid of a wealthy coach but I would argue that is not what a diversity policy is supposed to be for.

2. I don't much like the policy for CSU, but their slots are not nearly as scarce or valuable as Cal and UCLA.. that makes a big difference.

3. I am fully aware that other academic institutions regularly engage in inappropriate influence in the admissions. As I said, join them if you want. I am confident if we have this debate in the Cal community, the idea of doing this will not come close to winning favor

The college admissions process is a cesspool. Cal should not use the antiquated ethics of other as an excuse to join the cesspool. UC should set an example. If corporations did comparable things to universities they would be massively and publicly fined. Corporations used to do similar things as normal course of business until there was a massive crackdown in that culture. It will come for universities as well. And it should. The days where influence and connections got you spots that should be selected by merit should have ended long ago

3. I am fully aware that other academic institutions regularly engage in inappropriate influence in the admissions. As I said, join them if you want. I am confident if we have this debate in the Cal community, the idea of doing this will not come close to winning favor

The college admissions process is a cesspool. Cal should not use the antiquated ethics of other as an excuse to join the cesspool. UC should set an example. If corporations did comparable things to universities they would be massively and publicly fined. Corporations used to do similar things as normal course of business until there was a massive crackdown in that culture. It will come for universities as well. And it should. The days where influence and connections got you spots that should be selected by merit should have ended long ago
Preferred admissions (and not just for athletics) is a way of life in private school, and as Harvard can tell you ,has passed legal muster in the federal courts. Just look at the children of US politicians. faculty, large donors, royalty, celebs, and on and on. Or you could look at Cal when DiFi's husband calls (Google it) or Chancellor special admissions. Also there is not anything in the holistic approach that Cal takes that says they can't consider relationships (see Jeff Tedford's children). For example, that wonderful GPA might not be a high class standing in many privileged high schools these days, particularly after AP is added. Ninety-eight percent of students accepted to Cal placed in the top ten percent of their high school graduating classes. In those days there were also test scores. It may be that when all was said and done, the relationship still didn't justify admissions, given all the other criteria.

I doubt Cal was going to hold CM given the money is home town school threw at him. The problem lies with selection of his successor IMO. This seems like an academic exercise. The issue is what you do now with the program.

the biggest misconception about cal basketball is that coach martin (who played in the nba & was coached by gene keady plus he's a smart guy, he not a dumb azz) didn't understand offensive schemes compared to coach montgomery (which is an unfair comparison vs arguably the greatest strategist the game has ever seen, the bears ability to score after timeouts on schemed in bound plays under mike was ******* unreal)...cuonzo told me & his prospective recruits that as long as they played very physical man to man nba level d, he would let them improvise/free lance nba style on o...that's the sobering reality of today's college recruiting & failure to understand this will result in non nba level players on a roster

I do not want to remotely criticize a kid who has nothing to do with the situation, especially on hearsay evidence that I have no way to verify. This is a response to you. A 3.67 at PHS coupled with "solid" test scores does not get you within 10 miles of getting accepted at Cal. Further, what you were asking of them was not only unethical and unwise, it is literally illegal. I'm sure he is a decent kid and I'm sure if he applied he was accepted at another UC.

I have no way of knowing whether that influenced Martin's decision as you claim. (I suspect the much higher salary that we were never going to match was the deciding factor) but if he expected automatic entry for all his kids into the school whether or not they are close to matching the academic profile of an admit, he can GTFO. If he was effectively recruiting for Missouri while still our coach, he can GTFO really hard.

Not that I am accepting that any of that is true, but I am saying that anyone who cites this fact pattern at Cal that needs to be changed needs to find someone else to root for. We are a public university serving the people of California, not a basketball team with a university attached. I guarantee if you put it to a vote of faculty or of students or of alums or of the taxpayers of California, the idea of admitting the basketball coach's son just to make him happy is going to lose overwhelmingly. You either need to accept that or move on to an organization that is more aligned with your principles

DiFi's husband broke the law. The fact that he is uber wealthy and get away with it doesn't make it right. I think the public response to that should indicate that the public doesn't want that type of deal.

I think if you asked most people they would wish that institutions don't work this way. They just can't stop it. Harvard is private. Cal is not.

On that GPA. Let's be clear. A 3.67 UC GPA at an affluent high school is not a good Gpa. for those that are 50 like me, that is probably like a 3.1 or 3.2 in our day and I am being generous. First you have grade inflation. Such that about half of all high school grades are A's. In affluent schools it is higher. My kids generally score 98-100% (sometimes higher than 100%) in classes where you need an 89.5% to get an A. With weighted classes,that 3.67 equates to 8 A's and 16 B's. That is not even approaching top 50% of the class let alone top 10% in an affluent high school. As I said, I don't accept that number as real for Martin's kid, but the argument is being made that Cal should accept a kid with that GPA which I'd bet puts him bottom third, from an affluent high school with all those advantages. There is no freaking way that kid is qualified.

+ paid a fair amount more
+ was much closer to "home"
+ looked to be far less likely to jerk him around on multiple issues and had less impediments to winning

1. I don't know if the 3.67 is good enough for a preferred walk-in. (Not saying it is or isn't, but preferred walkons usually have good grades.)

It became clear that Martin and Cal admin had no conversation about recruiting restrictions before he took the job. That is certainly initially Cal's fault, but at some point you also have to blame Martin for not adjusting and continuing to recruit players that wouldn't pass admissions.

Cal "jerked Cuonzo Martin around" when they...
- didn't finalize his contract for ages
- didn't stick up for him right away when Yanni got in trouble
- didn't even have a court for the team to practice on on some occasions

Maybe all those things were part of the bureaucratic mess that is Cal, but I can sure understand why Martin may have felt like he wasn't being treated well.

Personally, I am glad this is back. A lot has happened for me since 2016-dam evacuations, fires, multiple job changes, political chaos, racial chaos, virus chaos. I am far more cynical and grumpy than I was 5 years ago. It's nice to be reminded that I had a fun, entertaining outlet like Cal basketball and this thread. The thread was, at its core, hopeful, boisterous, enthusiastic - as Shocky is in person. He made some of my most memorable Cal moments possible and happen. I got on the floor with players after the game because of him, got to sit courtside and marvel at Kam's height, at Jaylen's athleticism and Ivan's skills. And if I had t caught him after one particular game, I would have had to walk the 20 blocks back to my car. Cal was full of promise as a program and the spirit of Shocky helped liven up the floor and these boards. It's been boring since- both in Haas and here.

I'm going to take his return as an omen. Maybe Fox can pull something together, probably not, but at least I can dream of a Monster Class coming that will bring back even a modicum of interest in Cal basketball.

since there are only around 29 posters/fans on this board these days, who's really reading the monster?...that would be a much more diverse & significantly younger readership including high school & college players & their friend/families/coaches, exactly the targeted segment that cal basketball needs to connect with in the future to sell out haas & create internal/external energy...and yeah they do not post on this board, censorship is for losers

I don't know if EVERYTHING the monster stated was true and I don't really care.

There was a lot of good TRUE info and, at least as important, some fun and excitement (which is sadly missing these days from California Basketball).

reading comprehension 101: both ivan & jaylen (who were both readers of cal's monster class during their high school recruitments) had a significant # of under the table offers including brown's 200k from georgia but guess what?...neither one of them accepted any of these illegal offers (which is tax fraud as you point out), they both fell into the cali sunlight clean as ****

neither one of them got **** by coming to berkeley other the promise of an education at the #1 ranked public university in the world, that's how the magic of cal basketball works...the only thing that was a little bit edgy was coach martin offering bishop o'dowd's lou richie an assistant coaching position which is legal under the ncca regulations...lou told me he did not feel comfortable in accepting the job as he thought it was a conflict of interest, then coach martin pivoted to yanni...cuonzo later made this strategy work with the porter family in missouri, the porter deal potentially could've happened in berkeley if roberta wasn't so adamant on leaving the bay after joshua wasn't accepted by admissions

how clean/ethical is coach martin?...5 star mcconalds all american caleb "biggie" swanigan (also a reader of cal's monster class, a 1st round nba draft choice out of purdue, currently signed to a 3 year $5.2m guaranteed contract with the portland trail blazers) made his official visit during young ivee's visit & wanted to join ivan & jaylen as golden bears which would've been a legit final 4 potential team with t-wall, the bird & j mat...unfortunately caleb (who was adopted) could not get letter of intent signature approval from his dad/guardian who told cuonzo that he would only let his son go west if he would pay for all his travel expenses from the midwest to every game...coach martin passed on that deal
