during labor day weekend of 2010 tony woods beat the crap out of his girlfriend in front of their 8 month old child...woods was arrested and charged with three counts of assault for kicking and pushing courney lorel barbout who suffered a fracture of her spine in the attack

against the 6'11" 250 lbs woods, courney had no chance to protect herself

wake forest did the right thing and suspended woods

so oregon's sleazeball mbb hc dana altman recruited woods to shore up the ducks interior defense

steve alford & dana altman are enablers of players that commit crimes of violence against women if it means they might win a few more games

dana altman is once again relying upon 6 transfers for the ducks 2013 season...2 of these transfers are srs: mike moser & jason calliste

the 2 sr transfers are not student athletes in any sense of the word...moser & calliste will arrive in the fall & then depart that spring with zero academic progress and/or achievement...they are like transients

beyond devaluing the already shaky oregon degree (which is considered a jc caliber education with its 90+% acceptance rate), those players that have worked within the bb program for several yrs are recruited over & benched in favor of guys who don't even know where the library is in eugene

so who else did altman recruit for the 2013 ducks?

*elgin cook, declared ineligible during hs in milwaukee for having a gpa under 2.0
http://themilwaukeedrum.com/2011/02/13/the-tragedy-of-elgin-cook-other-mps-black-student-athletes/

*lonzo bell from lbp was declared ineligible before the school yr

*christiano felicio from brazil was declared ineligible by the ncaa after attending a roseville "prep school" handpicked by altman that is facing allegations of academic fraud & child abuse
http://fox40.com/2013/01/10/roseville-prep-academy-coach-arrested-for-physical-abuse/

bottom line
*****a cal degree helps you move forward in life & marry the girl of your dreams
*an oregon degree helps you get hired as the night shift supervisor at the truck stop in medford & probably marrying a lot lizard

the art of the deal starts with an education

a cal haas undergraduate business school degree provides the necessary business skills (ability to find the hidden pipe bomb in 300+ pages of financial & legal documents, etc.) to successfully move forward without a mba (thereby saving an additional 2 yrs of schooling)

stanford & ucla do not offer undergraduate b-school programs, one must study economics which is a less than optimal area of study if one is pursuing a well rounded business foundation for killing it in biz down the road in today's fiercely competitive operating environment

the leader scorer for the bears at saturday's scrimmage was ocean league mvp & volume scorer #15 jordan mathews with either 22 or 26 pts depending upon who was keeping stats

jordan is #24 against loyola & #40 thomas welsh in the foto below...mathews will represent #15 this season in deference to more tenured ricky kreklow who will wear #24

all american jabari bird will get #23 (his favorite player growing up was michael jordan, jb used to watch space jam over & over as a kid) as former #23 alan crabbe is now in the nba & once again wearing #23 for the portland trail blazers

hopefully mike montgomery biggest challenge in 2015 will be figuring out what #s jabari bird & bod's #23 ivan rabb will rock that season

Calling on the Shockster, please don't go MIA on us with all of the questions cropping up on the Basketball Board....

Would love your comments on a number of recent developments:

  • How did Idrissa Diallo's visit go? Sure hoped he would commit on the spot and don't like the idea of him visiting wild Eugene this weekend. Hope he can see himself fitting in better with true student/athletes and high class/high character players we have better than the hired guns at U of Nike. Idrissa is reputed to love warm weather and Eugene is expecting an uncharacteristically nice October weekend, with a sunny Saturday and temps in the low 70's. When our eldest considered the U of O years ago we were happy to have his visit timed with a rainy day to give him a good idea of what to expect. Naturally he selected the University of California (Davis) instead...

  • Mr. Welsh is clearly doing his due diligence in his college selection process and we were happy to hear today that he plans another visit to Cal. It sure seems that our group of scholar athletes will be a better fit for an academic (and basketball) minded athlete like Thomas than the trust fundsters at UCLA. On the other hand it was not good to hear that he will also visit Stanfurd but hopefully he can see that Monty's development of big men is miles ahead of Stanfurd.

  • And finally, a recent poster on the basketball board mentioned a dour outlook on the players, season and recruitment of Mr. Rabb. Curious as to whether you have seen that post from "til we wobble" and wondering if he may have spoken with jj. If so is that someone who generally plays things close to the vest and conservatively, kind of a glass half empty, don't count your chickens before they hatch person. After all, Monty himself has seemed uncharacteristically positive about his frosh and optimistic about this team...

Given the unfortunate football season the interest in basketball insights (and good news) is at an all time high...

everyone is entitled to their opinions (but i'm gonna bury people in biz or discussions about golf course architecture or cal athletics that make up facts)...isn't that what truly makes the university of california, berkeley one of the great institutions of independent thinking in the world?

the cal bb staff has done a masterful job with both idrissa diallo & thomas welsh in their recruitments...now idrissa & thomas need to evaluate all the info & make the best decisions for themselves from a 50 yr perspective

with respects to ivan rabb's recruitment, mike montgomery & gregg gottlieb are trying to a certain extent to manage expectations...he's the #1 player for 2015 in the universe & every major hc in the usa is trying to get in front of him...it will be very difficult for the bears to prevail but the odds were against the bears too when the bay area's last #1 player jason kidd signed with the bears & electrified the cal bb program

why might ivan sign with the bears?

this was a non starter ivan's freshmen yr as academically he struggled during his transition yr to the rigors of bod's challenging classwork...but the light went on for ivan, he started attending tutoring sessions both before & after school and has raised his gpa to 3.15...he is truly now a student athlete with a balanced perspective & will be recruitable by world class universitites like cal, stanford & duke

ivan's dad is encouraging him to take a serious look at his national options but his mom wants him to "stay kind of close" & grandpa is a longtime bears fan

how many of you are going to attend a bod game this season wearing a cal hat and/or shirt?...if you missed watching jason play at st joseph are you really going to miss this potentially once in a lifetime opportunity?

the final chapeters in the recruitment of idrissa, thomas & ivan have yet to be written...

but make no mistake about it, the cal MONSTER class is here in berkeley right now!

as i wait with a cal buddy for our delayed flight to scotland* now is a good time to share the story of jason kidd's recruitment

*we will be traveling to trump's new course in aberdeen to continue my quest of playing the golf magazine world top 100 courses, the trump course is the sole new entrant to the 2013 list that i have not yet played...other highlights will include the machrie on the isle of islay (immortalized by the long and winding road), my favorite course in scotland the quirky cruden bay and of course, a return to the home of golf, the old course at st andrews

when kidd was with the phx suns, i used to host j, the team's asst coach frank johnson (later become the hc before losing too many games & having an affair with the also married wife of the suns largest corporate sponsor resulted in him being fired (kidz, that's that's the quickest way to throw away a promising career) along with my close friend the now deceased dr gary mack (the team shrink...counseled j on marital issues with mrs crazytown, joumana) at my summer club in flagstaff, forest highlands (which is considered the augusta national of arizona)

j told me during one of our rounds together that his final college list included kansas, arizona, ohio state & kentucky with the jayhawks probably the leader despite his never actually ever visiting lawrence...he started playing in informal pick up games at harmon organized by his friend monty buckley...j told me there was a defining epiphany like moment when walking thru a grove of trees near the creek north of harmon with his bb bag over his shoulder on a beautiful bay area afternoon that it all came together for him

kidd realized how much he loved his mom & dad and that he wanted to share his college experience with them...it was that simple in jk's mind-he never even made an official visit to cal, there was no need to do so

so j played in front of his mom & dad and friends at the #1 public university in the world before moving on to generate $200+m in nba earning before recently being named the hc for the brooklyn nets

i last saw j at whisper rock a yr ago & he told me that he's never regretted his time at cal...he cherishes the collegiate memories he shared with his parents, dad steve died in 1999 (real talk, our parents will not love live forever and our time with them is limited)

fast forward & another top player in the usa from oakland is faced with similar choices/opportunities

what are your priorities in life, ivan?

#5
mom matters#

keep in mind that academically ivan is a better student that jason & also jason never had a monster class in front of him as teammates when he picked cal

balanced student athletes, like former cal/nba all star & current mayor of sacramento kevin johnson, realize that regardless of talent level, basketball can be a violent & cruel game that every player is only one play/second away, one broken leg/hip, etc from being done forever on the basketball court

but nobody/nothing can ever take away a degree from a world class university

look carefully at these guys, their eyes & comfortable body language with each other

the monster class guys truly like each other

what is a monster class?

all of these guys are strong students & true student athletes...there are no dumb azzs in this group

all of these guys have an edge to them (just like their coaches partcularly mr cranky pants)

what edge u talkin about shockster?

*****jordan mathews-disrespected by every recruiting service despite being the ocean league mvp & volume scorer@santa monica...recruiting analyst josh gershon told me 7 months ago that among west coast shooting guards that zach lavine, marcus allen, isaac hamilton & darin johnson "all definitely have more scoring upside than jordan mathews"...wonder if gershon saw jm light it up as the bears leading scorer in sat's scrimmage?

*****kameron rooks-given a backhanded compliment by arizona's sean miller...k(rooks) was offered a scholly by the wildcats but told he would need to redshirt his 1st yr in tuscon...well guess what, mr former fat boy has worked his azz off to lose signficant weight and transform his body (kudos to scott thom too) & now looks the part of a pac 12 stud like his dad sean

*****roger moute a bidias-growing up in cameroon, rmab has seen poverty & injustices that most americans can't possibly imagine...look at the map of africa & then think about roger's journey to america to pursue his basketball & academic dreams...doesn't hurt that his bro if one of the true dirty work hard azz enforcers in the nba

*****sam singer-sammy has heard all the snickers, how can a jewish guy from florida with zippo suntan that played against rinky dink opponents play in the pac 12?...and then mr gonna be fired after this season johnny dawkins took the allen twins instead of firming up singer's stanford non actionable offer?...do you think ss might want to clownpunk jd & the cards this season?

*****jabari bird-tired of playing 2nd fiddle to non student athlete aaron gordon..."aaron is a good friend of mine but at the same time i see him as a rival"...guess what, jb is fired up to take on ag & the wildcats after the cal/arizona only matchup last yr resulted in a thrilling bears victory in tuscon...the son of a san quentin employee, jb is not all american candy azz soft, he is mentally tough & wears his grim game face like a competitor

*****ahmaad rorie-a true mama's boy (like the shockster) from a single parent family, ar made the courageous decision to leave behind his one true love in mom & family/friends to travel across the country from tacoma to a cow pasture in florida@monteverde to improve his academic discipline (rorie carried a 3.6 gpa@lincoln) to better prepare himself for cal...ahmaad is mentally nails & a true leader on the floor

if idrissa diallo & thomas welsh this fall and/or sami eleraky & cameron oliver this spring sign with the bears, they will be joining a truly monster class of special guys that are developing 50 yr friendships (shabazzzz need not apply)

jim mcgill (check out his sam singer article today) of this site, ryan gorcey & josh gershon (extensive player evaluations) & john foletta (has broken several major stories including cal's 2017 commit) all provide excellent coverage of cal bb

if finances are available, cal fans should subscribe to all 3 sites

every morning after i check on my golf course architecture/rankings correspondence i scan the wall steet journal, new york times & the local arizona republic in a loosely conceived scheme to be semi informed...multiple sources are the key to a well rounded knowledge base

my conversation with josh gershon reads like a boxing match

gershon offers up a real backhanded compliment of jordan mathews, labeling him a "classic overachiever"

reminds me of when i finished my quest of playing the world's top 100 courses (there are a dozen of us that have achieved this feat & i'm the youngest) at nine bridges on jeju island in south korea...golf magazine south korea's editor interviewed me and asked me for my thoughts on nine bridges

i smiled & honestly told him that nine bridges is clearly the best course it south korea, that it is also the best conditioned course in asia & that the risk/reward par 5 finishing hole with an island green is one of the most dramatic 18th holes in golf

i did not mention that i think there are 1000+ courses in the uk alone that are better than nine bridges...

I don't see what's so wrong with Gershon's assessment of Mathews. Mathews doesn't have what you would call a great basketball body, he isn't the most athletic guy, and he doesn't appear silky smooth in his movements. He's a guy that gets things done by being very fundamentally sound, smart, and tough, which is a byproduct of having Phil Mathews as his father. His upside isn't as high as a LaVine or Darin Johnson, but that doesn't mean JM can't be a very good, or even great, college player.

If that's true regarding Solo and remains to be true, that's great news.

If he gets the max from his ability pretty consistently this year, with the major upgrade in depth and talent, this will be a very dangerous team.

anybody still wondering if every player on the above roster if fully capable & likely to graduate from cal?

anybody still wondering if the current cal bb players are truly special individuals?

anybody still wondering why the top dog on the northside of campus only serves pizzas?

bares are not stoopid

go kal

it's now almost only a month before the bear's season opener at haas vs cop a feel state yet there has been no public announcement that unbreakable will be the official theme movie for the 2013 cal bb program

what are these guys waiting for?

the grind#
unbreakable#

the cal bb family should also schedule a movie night together to watch searching for sugar man, an unbelievable true story

one of the most remarkable individuals of personal strength (and we're talking nelson mandela level humility & courage) is sixto rodriguez, an american musician from detroit

rodriguez toiled a life of hard labor thinking his music career had never taken off when if fact his music has been wildly popular in south africa for decades...and you won't believe what happens when he finally travels to cape town for sold out concerts for his longtime adoring fans (who thought he had died yrs ago)...

would be very interesting to hear the comments of roger moute a bidias after the movie

gonna tell the truth, this movie made the shockster cry (in an uplifting way)

searching for sugar man won the best documentary award at the 85th oscars in hollywood this year

sixto is truly unbreakable

I loved that movie as well, but I'm not sure why you'd want Roger's thoughts on it. I hope it's not because you think it's of local interest to him, because Cape Town is about as local to Cameroon as San Francisco is to Guatemala.
