cal's monster class exclusive update:

this morning's press conference will not include public announcements of the 3 assistant coaches

coach tim o'toole staying in berkeley may be announced but there are logistical/negotiations with the other 2 fire breathing high impact recruiting assistant coaches that will require a little more time before their names can be publicly announced

So the other two have been identified and things are moving??? If they have been identified what do you think are the chances of Wyking eventually getting them to sign on?

very high probability just contractual timelines that preclude them being announced today

So, Tommy Amaker was offered the Cal head coaching position and turned it down?

No. No one but Jones was offered the head coach position per Williams at the presser today and per others, as well.

Not Pasternack. Not Musselman. Not Bennett. Not Amaker.

Just Jones.

Williams' statement is meaningless, because an offer won't be extended without both sides having a pretty good idea that at least salaries are in the same ballpark and that the offer would likely be accepted. It was nice AD speak, but that's it.

That said, it wouldn't have taken long in discussions to figure out that Amaker wasn't a salary match. I don't see how we could have gotten far enough in the process to even decide, regardless of salary, that he was our top choice (and regardless of salary, I'd rather have Wyking than Amaker, or most of the names thrown out there).

Hate to defend a guy like Wilner but where did he say that the funds have been fully-raised?

Jon Wilner‏@wilnerhotline

@CalAthletics AD Williams: practice facility has been "approved by campus" & discussed w donors but no timetable for shovel in ground

mb, the wilner innuendo is that we're good to go with the lead donor, etc. & nothing could be further from the truth

no timetable for shovels in the ground is an understatement, that's the #1 reason (#2 is the team practicing 3 times at a local high school because court time wasn't available on campus other than at 5:30 am upon returning from a road trip, #3 was the team flying commercial unlike the charter flights at arizona, etc. & #4 the misuse of the meb funds to pay operational costs including recruiting expenses) the deal maker is no longer in berkeley, he considered the administration at cal as "amateur hour" for their failures to address his long stated concerns/wish list

The question isn't what the Wilner innuendo is, the question is, what is the Mike Williams innuendo that Wilner is reporting.

Keep in mind that Williams wants to paint as positive picture as possible. If he had donor approval, his statement would have said more than "discussed w donors." Like "we have commitments for funding." The innuendo of "discussed w donors but no timetable for shovel in ground" is that the funds haven't been fully raised yet.

The truth might be otherwise, but the innuendo of Williams as reported by Wilner is that we've got a ways to go on funding.

OK. The practice facility is mandatory. No arguments..

The charter flight issue, however, isn't at ALL clear (at least to me). There are TWO trips on their schedule (Zona and So Cal) for which flights from Oakland to those markets are within two hours gate to gate. For LA it is about 80 minutes. Moreover, with SEVERAL flights nearly every hour there is SURELY a way, baring bad start dates when it is MUCH cheaper to do it commercial.

Should the team fly charter to SLC or Denver? Should they fly charter for the WA trip, ESPECIALLY when starts in Wazzu. No question at all. Should they charter when they have a W/Sat split and they can get home that night if charter but incur an extra night on the road commercial? No argument But the blanket statement that we should compete with Zona on this is asine and fails to understand the delta. If it wasn't commercial vs. Charter than the deal maker would have bitched about the charter being not a tricked out set of lears that allowed his players to stretch out. Face it, the deal maker found out Cal ain't the SEC where sports rule. Too f'ing bad.

congrats to former cal long range gunner shantay legans on being named the head coach at eastern washington university

one of his former teammates told me that shantay has admitted to him that transferring to fresno state & giving up his cal degree in retrospect wasn't the smartest move of all time...same former bear told me that apparently shantay's moms susan used to yell obscenities at the refs, coaches & opposing players during games in a loud ear piercing screams, she's a real crowd pleaser

Is there any intel out there regarding the prospective assistant coaches.

Will they have limited, moderate or extensive coaching experience?

Will their reputations impress or excite recruits, fans and donors?

Do they have personal experience with the guys that run the shoe company sponsored AAU programs?

What is their experience or involvement with the U.S. or International professional leagues?

Do you expect international recruiting qualifications or experience?

What will be their individual role on the staff?

there's much talk that jones is in town trying to personally recruit me to become an assistant coach, the biggest spelling point is that it legitimizes stormin' the floor at haas, don't need a ******* seat belt or worry about pac 12 fines/reprimands then...i'll let you know, coach

Having Ivan on our team meant that we could compete with any team in the country. He has a quiet confidence and played within the concepts of the offense, even when that meant sacrificing shots or scoring. Totally unselfish.

Ivan averaged a double-double with 14 and 10.5, and was the leading rebounder in the Pac 12. Career 54.4% shooter, 41% from three, and part of the biggest and best post defending front courts at Cal ever, a key piece in the top 15 defenses both years.

In his freshmen year he started off huge. His first game as a Bear was a double double with 14 pts, 13 points, and 2 blocks. He went 10-10 from the line in his second game, and another double double (14 and 13 and 5 blocks) in his third game. Other early season games were 18 and 9 vs San Diego State and 15 and 11 with 4 blocks vs St Marys.

Another double double (19 and 10) in the win vs #21 Utah, out playing first round NBA player, Poelti. 17 and 8 vs Oregon, 20 and 8 vs ASU, 18 and 10 vs USC, 15 and 13 vs Arizona, 21 and 15 first OSU, and 13 and 12 vs Hawaii.

This year he started off missing two games with an injury, following a summer that slowed him down with mono. But he notched four more double-doubles his first 4 games back, including 19 and 11 vs SDSU, and 25 and 13 vs LA Tech.

Way too many big games to mention but he scored 16 pts, 16 boards vs Arizona, 20 pts, 15 rebounds (and 5 blocks) vs ASU, and 17 pts and 20 rebounds vs UCLA in three consecutive Pac12 games.

Yes, that was not a typo. He cleaned the glass with 20 rebounds vs UCLA.

Is this just crazy numbers?

Well, I'm not done yet

20 and 14 vs UW, 14 and 12 (and 3 blocks) vs Washington State. He scored 17 points, including the go ahead clutch basket and then blocked the USC shot at the buzzer to beat #25 USC.

25 and 13 vs Stanford, 12 and 14 in the 2OT win vs Utah, 14 and 11 vs ASU, 16 and 13 vs Stanford, 12-13 vs Oregon State.

Rabb has helped his team beat #21 Utah, #12 Arizona, #11 Oregon (by 20 pts) and #25 USC.
Rabb is the best rebounder in Cal history

Oakland's finest, high character, and great teammate, son and brother. What an honor it has been to have Ivan Rabb in a Cal uniform, and representing Cal and Oakland.

Good luck to Ivan in the League. Thanks for coming to Cal.

Yes, Ivan Rabb is a MONSTER

Me too. If Cal could just find a couple of wings, next year could be really good. Just think, Cal could have had Jolly, Dillard, and Frayer: problem solved. But admissions wouldn't let it happen. I guess that is the biggest difference between Cal and Oregon, Arizona, etc.

that's not even close to reality, cal admissions is not the fault for the unbalanced roster with a lack of wings, that's squarely on the deal maker

oscar frayer is dyslexic & davon dillard had a 2.7 gpa, the odds of either one ever graduating from berkeley was minimal

tyson jolly was a different deal, he went to prep school for a year & then admissions reneged on the deal due to his lack of academic development

Well, it sounds like you agree with my conclusion: "I guess that is the biggest difference between Cal and Oregon, Arizona, etc." In other words, all of those guys get admitted at probably 9 of the 12 "universities" in the Pac-12.

agreed, there are no academic standards at oregon & arizona, coaches can offer acceptance letters on the spot...but more importantly their boosters & shoe companies will financially incentivize families of top 50 prospects, consider troy brown sr's aau support bump from nike for sending his son to eugene & deandre ayton's impoverished family moving from bermuda to hlllside prep in phoenix which offers online classes with exams taken by teammates before he heads down to tuscon for a year
