Tre Watson Out For Season With Lower Body Injury

Cal senior running back Tre Watson will miss the rest of the season with a lower body injury.

Watson limped off the field after taking a low hit in the first quarter of Saturday's win over Weber State. He returned for one play in the second quarter, but again had to be helped off the field, and this time did not return.

The Corona, CA native has not used a redshirt year and hinted on Twitter that he will pursue a medical redshirt and a fifth season of eligibility.

In two games this season, Watson rushed for 83 yards on 17 carries and caught five passes for 31 yards.

In his absence, junior Patrick Laird and senior Vic Enwere will likely get the bulk of the carries at running back.

Should these coaches be held to account for allowing an injured player, obviously limping, back in the game?

I have no direct knowledge but I doubt it. Most likely it was a trainer/player decision, not a coach's. Most likely, it's no one's fault, just part of the game.

Bad news for Cal and Tre Watson. Laird and Enwere need to step up.

So sorry to hear this. Tre's a warrior. Here's wishing him a speedy recovery.

I was at the game and saw Tre sprinting up and down the sideline after the half and moments before re entering the game. At least his straight away speed and movement looked good at that time. And his run play was a good chunk for a first down. So it wasnt like he was hobbling when he went back. I feel bad for him. Its a big loss for player and team. My best to him.

Probably precautionary move to prevent further damage. At least we are set with Laird.

I'm sure they know, but there are all sort of reasons why they chose not to disclose. For example, if Tre did not want the public to know the nature of the injury, I'm sure there are privacy rules preventing coach to talk about it.

Big bummer, really liked his heart and the spark he gave the team.

I hope he is granted a fifth year and he takes it.
It would be good for him and good for Cal.
Watson, Laird and Ali-Walsh is a pretty strong backfield.

Anyway, I knew something was up.
Watching the game, the cameras showed him pounding the wall and sobbing.

I think he was really excited about this year.

Any guesses on who moves up to third on the depth chart?

Zion
Biaggio
McCrary
Fabiano
?

I don't think I've seen any of these guys in person.

About the worst injury news we could have gotten at this time of year. Even though Laird has stepped up big time, our RB group is very thin in terms of experience/production. Hope Watson has a speedy, complete recovery.

Appears to be a knee injury. I suspect it's an ACL tear.

I must be out of the loop, but what happened to Derrick Clark at RB? I can't find his name on the roster and I recall Dykes was pretty high on the guy.

Tre has been the best, all-around RB the last 2 years. Tough loss.
Does he have another year?
