Cal Baseball Faces TCU, but Maybe Not Frogs' Ace

May 30, 2019

TCU, Cal’s opening game opponent in the NCAA baseball tournament, has a talented left-handed starting pitcher who may be first collegiate pitcher taken in next week’s MLB dtraft.

But the Bears might not see him, at least not right away. TCU coach JIm Schlossnagle, perhaps taking the Bears a bit lightly told the Texas media this week that Nick Lodolo might not start the opener.

Schlossnagle’s reasoning is that he wants to save Lodolo for a possible matchup against the Regional's top seed and host Arkansas.

Senior right-hander Jared Janczak, who had 12 strikeouts and allowed two runs over six innings in a 13-6 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday, or Brandon Williamson, another 6-6 lefty, are the likely candidates to start against the Bears if Lodolo is held back.

The Cal-TCU game is scheduled for 4 p.m. (PDT) Friday. It follows the Arkansas-Central Connecticut contest.

A quick look at the other three teams in the regional.

Arkansas (41-17)

The Razorbacks are one of six SEC teams hosting a regional. Seeded fifth overall, the Razorbacks were runners-up in the College World Series a year ago. DH Matt Goodheart leads the team with a .347 batting average. Shortstop Casey Martin, like Goodheart a second-team All-SEC selection, has 15 home runs, tops on the team. The pitching staff is led by right-hander Isaiah Campbell who is 10-1 with a 2.37 ERA, He struck out 100 and walked just 18 in 95 innings. Closer Matt Cronin has 11 saves.

Central Connecticut State (30-21)

The Blue Devils earned an automatic bid by winning the Northeast Conference Tournament for the second time in three years. Right-hander Tom Curtin (5-3, 3.96 ERA)  was named the NEC Tournament MVP after allowing just two runs over 14.2 innings of work on the weekend. Junior outfielder Dave Matthews is the leading hitter with a .297 batting average. Opponents compiled a  robust .286 batting average against the CC pitching staff.

TCU (32-26)

The Horned Frogs were a preseason top 20 team that did not live up to expectations. They earned their NCAA bid by winning three games in the Big 12 Tournament, including a 15-3 win over Oklahoma (featuring a 14-run inning) and a 13-5 thrashing of Oklahoma State. This without leading hitter Jake Guenther (.347) who is expected back. This is the 14th time in Schlossnagle’s 16 years at TCU that the team has reached the NCAAs.

“Our team has shown a lot of grit, man,” Schlossnagle said. “They showed it in the Oklahoma game. Going into that 14-run inning, OU was winning 1-0. Then we beat Baylor. ... The committee is sitting in that room and they’re watching all this stuff. I know our RPI (59) isn’t pretty, but the RPI is not reflective of our team. We’re in and we deserve to be in. Now we’ve got to go play.”

Thank you,

It would be a HUGE deal If CAL didn't have to face Ladolo. He's 6-5 with a WHIP almost identical
to Hand's. But he's got 125 strikeouts in 98 innings. That is a really excellent ratio.

Maybe someone has some insight into Janczak...12 strikeouts in 6 innings against OK State,
but only 13 in his prior 28 2/3.

It would be pretty arrogant of TCU to not start Lodolo against Cal, but TCU's coach has a reputation for arrogance.

Two years ago we had experience against both Janczak and Ladolo and both pitchers were outstanding. These games were played towards the end of the Pac-12 season. Think this was an add on serie to build up our RPI rankings.

Your post gave me the boost to find out more about Janczak.

https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/college/big-12/texas-christian-university/article229275034.html

A couplle of quotes:

Janczak ranked as one of the Frogs' best starters in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, and was expected to be part of a 1-2 punch along with Nick Lodolo this season. But Janczak struggled early on in his return from multiple offseason surgeries, forcing TCU to shut him down for almost a month.

This is a guy who went 9-2 with a 2.31 ERA over 15 starts as a sophomore in 2017, and had a 3.00 ERA in eight starts last season. The Los Angeles Angels selected Janczak in the 32nd round of last year's MLB
This season, Janczak has seen his ERA climb to 8.10 in five starts, although that is largely due to him finding his way post-surgeries. Janczak underwent surgery to repair Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, as well as shoulder surgery last offseason, and never seemed to find the proper throwing slot early on this season.

All in all, I would say there's some reason feeling dissed if CAL doesn't face Lodolo, but
...IF Janczak is back....not so much.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!!

Is enough to to tell me that the 12 strikeout game is an outler only in the sense

Well, so far, score one for arrogance. Hopefully the Bears can come up with a late-inning rally.

Really bad day for the Pac-12 overall. All 5 Pac-12 teams were seeded to win today, but only UCLA and LSJU won.

Cal and ASU were blown out. Oregon State was humiliated at home by a team that had a losing record before winning its conference tournament.

Yes, the Bears' elimination game is Saturday at 10 am PT vs. Central Connecticut State. ASU (vs. Stony Brook) and OSU (vs. Creighton) also have elimination games on Saturday.

PAINFUL. I stopped watching after the 6th inning. Hand way off. Six turnovers (3 errors, 3 passed balls). TCU
came in with one super pitcher and two very good ones, unfortunately rounding into form.

CAL is too good of a hitting team. We win today and go for it.

What a disappointing end to the baseball season..losing 7-4 CCS. Overall think we did better than expected to make the NCAAs but our hitting, pitching & defense was not there!

Hitting should have been better, particularly with runners on base... but giving up 20 runs total to the #3 and #4 seeds in the regional was the most disappointing thing.

Oh, well. It was a very good season for the team until this weekend.

OSU eliminated.

ASU, fUCLA, and Furd all with 1 loss.

Pac-12 teams are 3-7 in the tournament even though 3 of those teams (6 of those games) were at home and all 10 games were against lower seeds.

That's ugly.
