Cal tight ends coach Marques Tuiasosopo is leaving Berkeley to become offensive coordinator at Rice.

The news was first reported by Football Scoop.

Tuiasosopo has been on Justin Wilcox’s Golden Bear staff for four years, the last two handling the tight ends after two seasons as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.

He joins the staff of Mike Bloomgren, who has been at Rice the past four seasons. He replaces Jerry Mack, who left Rice and joined the coaching staff at Tennessee. Rice is 7-23 the last three seasons and has not had a winning record since 2014.

A star quarterback at Washington, Tuiasosopo, 41,  was Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2000. He spent six seasons as a player in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders (2001-2006, 2008) and the New York Jets (2007).

He began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2009. After two seasons in Seattle, he moved on to UCLA for two years, then came back to Washington in 2013. He then spent two years at USC before returning to UCLA for the 2016 season,

He is the third member of the Cal staff to leave this offseason. Co-defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Tim DeRuyter departed to become defensive coordinator at Oregon. Strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton accepted the same job at Texas.
