Bears Add All-Conference Interior OL Will McDonald

The Bears added quality experience on the offensive line today with the commitment of 6-2/295 Coastal Carolina senior interior lineman Will McDonald after his official visit.

“I loved it,” McDonald said of his visit to Cal. “As soon as I left, me and my dad knew it was the right spot. Love the staff and everyone in the building. I don’t think there’s a better fit. I’m fired up to get over there and get this thing going.

“We have a ton of good players, a young team. I’m hoping to bring some experience to the room and help the team try and win an ACC championship.

“Coach Wilcox and Coach Bloesch are obviously great coaches but I think they’re also good people and care a lot about the players. That was huge for me. It’ll be exciting to play in the ACC and play a lot of the teams I grew up watching every Saturday.”

As a redshirt senior, the 3rd team All-Conference lineman started 13 games at left guard, helping lead Coastal Carolina to the top conference ranking in passing yards per attempt at 8.49 and third in yards per play at 6.33 and in sacks allowed with just 16.

A veritable pancake machine with his aggressive blocking style, McDonald has accumulated an impressive 83 pancake blocks so far in his collegiate career. He has also only given up 1.5 sacks in over 1,500 career snaps to-date.

As a prep at Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail, NC, the 3 star McDonald started for 3 seasons and was named AP All-State in 2019. He’ll have one year of eligibility at Cal.

McDonald becomes the 41st commit of the 2024 class for the Bears.

Great to add some additional experience to the offensive line! I love this young man's video and his attitude! From his quotes in the article, this sounds like a great fit!

Welcome to Cal, Will!

Great pickup for us. Highlight reel is terrific. Welcome Will!

Now we have one more big piece to get in place. Working hard on that. Stay tuned.

Super impressive to close on Mr. McDonald at this late stage! The highlight reel, the quotes, the timing is fantastic.

Welcome to the Cal family, Will and family!

This is a FANTASTIC get!! This is the sort of stuff that -- if it happened more frequently and was accompanied by on the field results -- would make my opinion of Wilcox do a 180.

Love, love, love LOVE this pickup!!!!

Changing the subject entirely - it is sad the way college football has gone. 41 new players!?!?!? On a 63 player roster?!?! This is nothing against this young man or against Wilcox specifically. But something needs to be done here. As happy as I am to get this stud, I doubt I will remember his name five years from now (as he will only be with us a few months). I can't imagine how my memory will be able to sustain a "Top 25" list in this era.

Two-way street, as much as we are now grabbing guys who will be enticed by our future schedules back east a lot of recent guys likewise were probably less enthused with ACC games and opted for a different scene.

Staff
There were very few guys Cal lost in the portal that they didn't need a portal slot for and who didn't figure to factor in much in upcoming seasons. And the roster is 85 plus 20 PWOs.

Ask K State if it can be done. This isn't too much different than a JC oriented program, except it's for everybody.

I agree that the old ways have passed and I will miss them.

As for us, I have yet to get used to looking at the hs recruits lists and dismiss who former foes got and didn't get. For the most part, we won't have to play against the vast majority of those guys.

Love this transfer. He plays fast, aggressive, nasty, and finishes plays. If he doesn't start on the interior he'll sure as hell be a key depth piece which we've been needing the last couple years and all teams have to have during the grind if the season. Welcome to The University of California to you and your family Mr. McDonald!

I'll remember his name if he dominates at Cal, gets drafted, and makes a name for himself in the NFL. And I gotta think that's our hope with every transfer we bring in with the idea that it would correlate to immediate team success as well.

I hear you. I don't follow or care about the NFL, so it is a little different for me.

Regardless -- so long as he stays healthy and out of trouble, I can't see too many scenarios in which this young man doesn't help us substantially.

I agree. I will miss the old days before The Portal and NIL and I will miss the PAC12. But those days are gone and will not return.

So let's move on and make Cal football relevant again on the national scene. Another major shake up is coming for college football in the not too distant future. I want Cal football to survive that shake up as well.

It's the shake up after this next one. Next, everything will be counting eyeballs and screens and how much revenue that produces. The one after that will be AI generated images of players playing - humans will no longer be involved.

Hey, you doubt it? We've already got auto tune that's killed the entertainment business (Herbie Hancock has already declared that jazz is dead.) and AI figures are appearing in ads and in movies.
