Cal quarterback Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele’s meteoric rise the in recruiting rankings as a 2025 senior found the talented Ewa Beach QB with no shortage of suitors but the relationship he built with Cal prevailed through most of the recruiting season till Sagapolutele made a late switch to Oregon.
After spending a month in green and gold, the talented frosh traded the green for blue and made his way back to Cal based on the relationship built during the recruiting process, where he promptly beat out Ohio State QB transfer Devin Brown and started from day one for the Bears.
It didn’t take long for the super frosh to show just exactly how talented he was, taking the college football world by storm, leading Cal to their 34-15 season opening road win in Corvallis, completing his first nine passes and finishing 20-for-30 for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Several of the frosh’s throws in the first drive alone were elite, including a ball thown behind the back of a tightly-covered tight end Mason Mini that the soph transfer hauled in for both players’ first collegiate touchdowns.
“I think it comes with repetition and just trusting in your teammates,” Sagapolute said about completing passes with such a high degree of difficulty. “I mean, my receivers last year - they definitely had a lot of trust in me, just to be able to place the ball, and I had a lot of trust in them, knowing they're going to go up and grab it. So it really just comes down to being able to trust each other and that connection guys build on and off the field. And you know, I was very tightly knitted with those guys, and I'm so tightly knitted with the guys I have now. So I'm just so grateful to be able to continue to keep it going.”
That connection is built by significant off-the-clock time spent together, not just in spring practice and fall camp.
“We spend so much time just staying extra hours at the facility or going to play basketball or playing some pickleball or anything,” the soph QB said. “We just try to spend as much time as we can with each other. I mean, we're always around each other and we just love to be in each other's presence.”
The Bears got an injection of talent for Sagapolutele to throw to this season, with portal transfer receivers Chase Hendricks, Ian Strong and Cooper Perry joining returners Quaron Adams, Jordan King, Trevor Rogers, Meyer Swinney, Cole Boscia, Mark Hamper, Keion Grayes and talented frosh Kai Meza.
“It's been so fun just being able to throw to so much different guys,” Sagapolutele siad. “Just the amount of talent that you have jumps off the screen, and I'm just so grateful that each guy wanted to be here and I'm just grateful that I can just put a ball up and a guy will catch it. Give a guy an easy ball like a bubble (screen) and he'll take it to the house and it's just been fun.”
With a spring under their belt with their 2026 offensive line that features a new starter in left tackle Jimothy Lewis along with a fairly new starter at the other tackle position in Frederick Williams, who’s continuing to come into his own after arriving at Cal as a defensive lineman, Sagapolutele has been happy with the protection and run blocking he’s seen from his line.
“The line is amazing,” The soph QB said. “They've worked day in and day out just to block for the running backs and for me. And I'm so grateful to have them. I've been so close with them and just continue to put my trust in them and them trusting in me.”
The soph QB has been impressed so far working with new offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville.
“Hard work,” Sagapolutele noted as the hallmark the new OC brings to the program. “I mean, he's one of the most hard-working guys I've ever seen, and just him being in that facility like 24/7 and texting me things things that I'm seeing and just continuing to put this offense in a better position has been has been fun. Just the amount of hard work that he puts in and the joy that he does it with, it's been fun for me to see.”
Asked about any standouts in the passing game in the spring, the soph QB made sure to spread some love to his tight ends and running backs, as well.
“Our whole offense as a unit...I mean, our tight end room is crazy,” Sagapolutele said. “We brought in Dorian Thomas. He's been - you've seen it, what he's done at New Mexico. We have Mason Mini. You've seen what he did last year. He was tremendous. John Tofi, he's underrated as well. He'll be a big piece for us this year. And I think one to look out for is definitely Taimane Purcell. He's one of the freshmen that we brought in, and he's he's been a game changer for us.
“But you know, our running backs have been great. Our running backs are amazing. Our receiver room is great. Our O-line is tremendous, and I think one to look out for the defensive side – obviously we have Ricky (Fletcher) here, so I think all of our DBs are great but Kingston Lopa. Kingston is definitely a threat this year and in practices, and he's such a long guy, fast, and he can make plays.”
Sagapolutele’s focus is always on not only improving himself as a QB but also helping make his teammates better.
“I think just being a better leader and just continuing to push my guys, on and off the field, whether it's just keeping our locker room clean or whether it's just getting extra reps after workouts or practice. I mean, our guys do it already themselves but just continue to push them together and doing it together has been great.”
Sagapolutele also credits new head coach Tosh Lupoi’s efforts to instill a winning culture in everything that they do.
“He's made it so much easier because he wants to win,” the soph QB said. “That's the same thing I want to do, and him always preaching about being relentless in everything we do. Relentless effort is probably one of the biggest things we do, and it's just continuing to be the best people we can be, on and off the field, and just continue to push each other.
‘It's a different culture that Coach Tosh brings. A relentless culture that we're so excited about and just seeing how early these guys have bought into it has been so fun, and just how closely we’re entirely knitted we've been since we've got here and I'm just so excited to continue to move on into the season.”
The hope for Cal fans is with the injection of talent coming from a Top 15 portal recruiting class, the chances to challenge for an ACC championship and playoffs might just be attainable. Does the soph QB notice the difference?
“Yeah, I'd say some could say so,” Sagapolutele said. “I mean, we had a great talent last year and we brought in great talent this year. We've kept great talent this year so I'm so excited to just go into the season with these boys and I know they're ready to show what they can do.”
