Had you bothered to read the article, you would have been AWARE that 5-time Olympic Gold Medalist MISSY FRANKLIN chose to DECLINE being interviewed for this story. In other words, no comment from arguably the greatest swimmer in Cal history, who I might add chose to be coached by Dave Durden (and not McKeever) when she came back to train at CAL in 2016.
PS. Word travels fast in the world of an athlete. You would have to be terribly NAIVE to think that Cal swimmers who had been interviewed for this extensive article, werent talking to others about it before it was published.

Scott Carter, the father of swimmer Danielle Carter called McKeever "Teflon Teri. Nothing sticks to her".
That's a highly damaging reflection of our administrators in our Athletic Dept.
Darla Carter, (his wife) recalled requesting a meeting with Knowlton in the autumn of 2019.
"It was almost like talking to a wall," Carter said.
Knowlton, Carter continued, "said he wouldn't meet with me unless I was alumni, a graduate or wanted to donate money."
Any competent administrator thanks the parents for coming to see him, reassures them that he will look into it. Then announces trainings for all the coaches from The Positive Coaching Alliance or a similar group. Shoot, even the Haas school must have relevant management classes. He is just SO bad, such a bad fit for Cal in the last half century much less the future we are headed into. The answer is not buildings.

Some of the allegations were "generational." For an example, telling a scholarship athlete they are lazy doesn't bother me. Making fun of the Stanford coach? Lol, good. I read those and similar allegations and said, "Is that all?"
The thing is - that was not all. Not even close. Some of the allegations are awful. Just despicable. Those allegations portray a coach who has serious issues and has become so focused on winning, for her own ego's sake, she lost sight of the point of coaching. She was my coaching the team. She thought she was the team.
Anyone saying it is generational is either ignoring the more serious allegations or they simply didn't read the whole article.

So what? Parents of prospective and current athletes are part of his constituency and he should at least hear them out and if the allegations are serious tell them he will look into it and follow up. He can't say he wil not talk with parents just because some are "jerks."
The allegations in the article are serious. If this was happening and he blew off athletes and their parents who tried to inform him about them then he should be fired. The athletics department is presumably FOR the athletes. And "generational" as an excuse just shows how out of touch he is with the modern era and with the Berkeley campus. We fired Campanelli for verbal abuse in the 1980s, and this goes beyond that. Indiana fired Bobby Knight decades ago. Indiana. Last Century.
Just a completely bad fit for our school at this period in history.

She was a swimmer at USC.
I see she's getting better at FULL DISCLOSURE.
She resigned from the NYT sports (after having been suspended) because she was working with Michael Phelps on an upcoming book and lacked full disclosure regarding the newspaper's conflict of interest policy. For having done so, she was taken off the swimming beat by the NYT when she was all set to cover the Summer Games in Tokyo. That's a pretty big "hit" to one's journalism career after having spent years climbing the mountain.

And for what it's worth, I've previously met the person in charge of overseeing Cal Women's Swimming during an athletic competition at Cal (in another sport) where someone in the athletic administration needed to make a decision regarding a facility issue during the competition.
Not impressed with the manner in which they handled it.... and I'll just leave it at that.

Perhaps an unpopular statement here. I do not know the women swimming coach. Society has changed and the way kids were coached in the past is not the way now. Kids have more of a voice but also have gotten less tough. It is not only in sports like swimming, it is sport wide. Coaches need to adapt or will deal with the consequences. I can tell from experience that kids in college are taught to come forth with their own problems and solve them. D-1 sports come with a lot of pressure on performance. It is also a choice to be a D1athlete. No one is forcing them to do it. There is no space for helicopter parents. Now if it comes to light that alleged countless complaints were not followed upon than that is an institutional problem. I just wonder that just now this has come to light. Why did it take this long? The coach deserves due process and the athletes deserve a thorough review and to be able to perform their sport without constant fear from what a coach may or may not do.
