The Cal Men's Golf team needs a major rally over the last few holes to grab 5th place from Pepperdine. Fingers crossed, but unlikely.
They came up three shots short.
A good performance, IMHO, considering they were playing with two juniors, two sophs and a frosh. Zheng and Du should be playing a full national amateur schedule this summer, if they can afford to, in order to get additional seasoning for next year. Those two, along with the two new additions who are the nos. 1 and 10 juniors, should provide a solid core to make a run at NCAAs.
not a hollywood fairytale ending to the season but the bears chased the waves hard down the stretch but couldn't get to the patio at nobu malibu before the evening stars came out to play after their afternoon naps kinda like sofa kings/queens while drag racing through the canyon but big boys don't cry
not strong enough (now, the future is unknowable)#
https://instagr.am/p/CsT9YrWOBMx 89, i've played the oak hill west 3 times (thought it wuz completely overrated & not even a usa top 100 course) but not since its recent phenomenal looking restoration of the donald ross classic by newcomer architect andrew green who meticulously researches old hole diagrams & club aerials to remove the garbage work by tom fazio (out of character holes with modern looking lakes fronting the green surfaces) & polish multiple golden age courses including oak hill, inverness & congressional (andrew also just got hired with my recommendation at my beloved interlachen in minnesota) to their original magic...hundreds of trees have also been removed which creates more fun & strategic decisions with greater air space options & improved turf that plays firm & faster
so gonna play oak hill again this september when the leaves start turning orange during an upstate daddy/daughter driving roadtrip (my compromise is to only walk a max of 18 holes per day, no 36 hole days) with taylor which will also include foodie stops in the hudson valley, catskills mountains & niagara falls...we love playing our favorite latest songs at full blast singing along with the top down over & over kinda like that song in tuscon that we beat to death, we ain't ever getting older
Your favorite course in Ireland is? I grabbed Tom Coyne's book the other day about his walk-about there.
I have no idea if it's world class. But almost 20 years ago I found myself playing a round at Ballyliffin Golf Club, on the shores of the North Atlantic. It was March, and it was cold and windy and you had to move your ball off the frozen fairway to take your shot from the rough, in order to preserve the turf. But the back 9 was right on the ocean and it was absolutely gorgeous.
89, tom coyne is a wonderful writer who emotionally taps into the absurdity of obsessive behavior (something the monster knows a thing or two about), we've played golf in philly & props to him for overcoming some of his more unhealthy tendencies...i'll post my ireland top 15 in another post
gmp, that's the magic of irish golf, there are fabulous life experiences on the shores of the north atlantic further afar from the tourist golf group buses...your vivid reminder may cause me to visit ballyliffin again this july when i'm relatively nearby checking out tom doak's new & artistically stunning st patricks links
6'2" 200 lbs frequent washington starter/now in transfer portal wide receiver taj davis from upland is gonna take an official visit to berkeley this weekend

Shocky, have you played the Institute where the NCAAs are being held? It sounds wild based on this review:
This is one of the finest, longest, hardest, most fair courses in the world. It's closed unless you know Mr Fry the owner of Fry's electronic stores. I caddied here in 2002 so got to play for free on Tuesdays. The tees, fairways, greens and everything else are perfect. Everyone gets a caddie and the yardage book is in code and only the caddies have the book. The conditions are as close to perfect as you will ever find since only 12 people are allowed to play each day and the season is very short. The are copy holes of 12,13 and 15 at Augusta National in fact all the tee boxes are modeled on Augusta. This is simply a stunning place to play golf. The yardage from the tips is appox 7800 yds and several forced carries of 240 to 250 prevent most players from even thinking about teeing from the longest tees. The greens are lightning fast and roll as true as can be possible. I played once when the green speed was 14 on the stimp but the ball held the line beautifully. There are no signature holes as every hole is simply spectacular. There are no average holes. From thousands of planted trees to imported Texas sand no expense was spared to please golfers who are invited only by Mr Fry himself.
philbert, i've played the institute a couple of times with fellow global golf centurion club (g2c2, must complete one of the world top 100 lists to become a member) buddy hong seh lim (the stanford grad/venture capital investor unexpectedly passed earlier this year) who wuz a member
plz don't confuse exclusivity with greatness, the public muni rustic canyon in moorpark is a thousand times better than this overwatered artificial modern looking design which is predictable in its hole designs with few inherently interesting strategic shot options with a good but not great walkable routing...it would not be in my california top 50
golf architecture worldwide rankings are heading in the direction of minimalist designs which celebrate nature (vs competing with it), see the golf hole fotos in earlier fotos of rugged natural looking designs...the institute is your grandfather's architectural perception of greatness as evidenced by the review you quoted which references "thousands of planted trees" and "imported texas sand" on a course trying too hard
to put this in terms more relatable to non golfers/non golf architecture enthusiasts, when shocky looks at the fotos above of the institute, this is what he sees, this is not a good look, ok?

Thank God. I hate the more modern American designs that move tons of soil, use fake features, and are the opposite of the minimalist celebrations of nature.

elite facilitator/distributor utah valley grad transfer trey woodbury tripped to berkeley this week, he's the #1 target on the staff's big board for the 13th & final scholly
reality is that the current combo guards are explosive relentless scoring machines, trey plays with the unselfish flair/dynamics of j kidd, he makes everybody on the court better...woodbury not only knocked down a lethal 40% on 3 pointers, he also plays with a physical **** you up defensive presence...in watching jalen cone last season in person last november in tempe he did not impress the monster (or likely nba scouts) with either his passing skills or defensive intensity, he's gotta lotta strawberry on that jam & will need to be open to coaching/mentoring up from coach mad dog & the staff in order to potentially get paid in the nba in the future
trey, if u point to the hills & if they ask u where u live, ur gonna make sure ur teammates r in a position to be successful (just don't inform ur po ur gonna take the monster uber helicopter), nothing can stop u
go all the way up (in the berkeley hills)#

yeah shocky really hates it when berkeley isn't accurately identified as the #1 ranked public university in the world

Yes, Goff went to Marin Catholic. I may be wrong but I'm guessing Shocky knows this and is poking some fun at Goff's surfer-boy demeanor and the likelihood that Marin Catholic kids occasionally head over to relatively nearby Stinson Beach for recreation/partying.
That was my assumption and, after you posted your question, I asked my Marin Catholic alumna wife if MCHS kids frequently went to Stinson Beach for fun and refreshment and she answered in the affirmative. I sensed there were more stories there that she declined to elaborate on with me...
Also, although I didn't look it up, I seriously doubt there is an actual Stinson Beach High School, since Stinson Beach is in a pretty sparsely population section of Marin County.
But calling Marin Catholic HS that is a bit like calling Cal State Fullerton...Cal State Disneyland (which I always found amusing).

Okay, thanks for the clarification (and maybe trip down memory land for wife lol)..I'm a SoCal person originally, so didn't realize the proximity, etc... Missing out on his humor attempt, and/or attempt to show that he is cool like Jared was lost on me for sure...I will probably get called a dumb azz for it, so there is that upside...
how shocky got walked to his non existent car during high school, the following is a loosely edited transcript of a conversation in the outfield during high school varsity baseball practice back in the day:
brusati (shocky's best friend): wait, tell me if i got this right, basically today at lunch in the cafeteria you asked the prettiest girl (a curvy brunette yoga female) in the school kathy toosher (name misspelled for privacy reasons, hers not mine) to go steady with you even tho we're freshmen and we don't got drivers licenses yet and she's a junior going out with senior star quarterback mitch delorenzo?
shocky (catching a pop fly): yeah that's pretty much it, bru
brusati (shaking his head in disbelief): did you even run this by your dad?
shocky: which one?
brusati (jogging to snag a foul ball by the gym): shocks, we don't even got cars, why would kathy toosher wanna go steady with you?
shocky: i got a 4.0 gpa, you and me are the only freshmen on varsity plus my mom told me smile is beautiful since i got my braces off
brusati: but she's already going out with delo who drives a *****in' camaro
shocky (fielding a grounder and throwing a strike to the 2nd baseman): look bru, delo is a dumb azz, he got a 2.5 gpa which means the good schools like cal and stanford won't want him...he's gonna go to marin community college next year, he'll be the 4th string quarterback and quit and then he'll be a male dancer in san francisco getting touched by bi curious businessmen (this actually sorta played out that way)
brusati (obviously upset): shut up, shocky!...if delo hears what you just said your gonna get your azz kicked after practice in the parking lot!
shocky (slapping his glove): whatever
brusati (shaking his head again): honestly sometimes shocks i don't think you live on planet earth with the rest of us, your kinda crazy you know
shocky (undeterred): hey bru, will your bro give me a ride home after practice?
postscript: bumped into kathy a few years later & we laughed about my crush on her and she tole me with kinda misty eyes that she regrets her decision...tole her as we hugged "life is not linear"
mb, if u got a map or something it's very clear that it's only 65.7 miles from stinson beach high school to the t-rex yoga studio in yountville
https://instagr.am/p/CgnrydaPqWx back in the day shocky visited tara iti (north of auckland, world top 25 course, tom doak design) as part of my new course opening ratings/rankings responsibilities & played/hosted with the club's founder billionaire ric kayne from beverly hills & his good friend (and silent partner at tara it) larry sheakley https://bearinsider.com/forums/8/topics/28431/50
sheakley asks me during the cookout on the beach if i wanna play again that week but i tell him i gotta get back to the states for cal's season opener...sheakley laughs & tells me he's also an ardent college basketball fan and that he's read cal's monster class which is kinda amazing to me but not totally shocking given the millions of views it had received at that time
larry (who is a fun non pretentious guy, kayne teases him the whole round about still primarily living in the midwest) owns the cincinnati reds baseball team (which he does not mention to me, our shared caddie tells me this after the round) & is the university of cincy's #1 booster/donor, he can literally pay whatever nil number bandaogo wants & then double (or triple it) it to get the deal done
got invited this evening back to tara iti (if shocky ever lived in another country it would be new zealand) to play the new tom doak and coore & crenshaw new north & south courses, will visit in february in 2024 once they're fully grown in & ready for architectural ratings
larry has met with aziz & expects a decision in the next 24-48 hours unless a cal nil donor emerges with a $1,000,000+ offer, he's been told that bandaogo's only visits have been to cincinnati at this time & that he's the necessary piece of the puzzle to competing for a national championship
so it's very unlikely that aziz bandaogo is gonna be a california golden program which is kinda sad considering his very close relationship to coach masden & his staff and the fact he's also the necessary defensive disruptor to a national championship run in berkeley
so who's gonna be the 13th & final scholly offer then?
trey woodbury is still the #1 target, not gonna mention his specific nil requirements (but will state he's willing to play for his former utah valley coach for less money) but more nil dollars needs to be raised very quickly in berkeley for this to happen
shocky got walked to his car when cal's monster class got terminated & that love has gone elsewhere, reality is that my annual animal advocacy fundraising here in maricopa county is more than the current cal nil dollars for football & basketball combined...yeah shocky is unstoppable in protecting the most vulnerable
gonna meet aziz this september when traveling to cincinnati to play at larry's club camargo which is a wonderful seth raynor design faithful restored by tom doak, it's the 3rd best golf course in the midwest after chicago golf club & crystal downs
make no mistake about it, aziz is the monster disruptor that is necessary for a national championship run in cincy
congrats to all big 10 academic honoree/kinesiology major grad & former purdue starting running back king doerue from amarillo in heading to the left coast
the bears gotta lotta injured (some seriously) rbs during 2023 spring ball, the #2 back after superstar jaydn ott is gonna be an open competition...chris street's decision to enter the portal wuz a poor one in so many ways
non stop motormouth (kinda like shocky) & undisputed team leader makena smith with one of the bears 4 homeruns in a 7-0 ncca regional win over hofstra, now cal gotta an elimination game against missouri this evening
multiple back ups got playing time which is critical for building the program & also resting the starters, will be interesting to see who is the starting pitcher vs the tigers
Cal wins 7 - 0 in the Oklahoma regional on the backs of a shutout pitching performance of Archer and freshmen two-inning reliever McDabe. Cal batters with 4 homers!
Clutch. @haylei_archer scatters five hits and puts a zero on the board in 5 IP. Ashanti McDade taking over in the circle.
