fantastic season for the cal softball program but reality is that compared to the #1 ranked team in the nation on their home field our bears just aren't strong enough (yet)

offseason starts on the flight home, what are the top 5 things that gotta happen for the bears to be a potential top 10 deep run in the ncca tournament team?

1) with the graduation of emotional mvp makena smith, smooth swinging left handed bomber kacey zobac needs to be persuaded by the staff/teammates to return for her final year of eligibility despite earning her berkeley diploma this month

2) incoming freshman who led california in strikeouts the last 2 seasons randi roelling needs to be the lockdown ace pitcher that the program lacks right now, haylei archer, sona halajian, anna reimers, ashanti mcdade & annabel teperson all need to take the next steps in their development with coach freeman and significantly improve their control to reduce this season's unforced walks & pitching behind in the count

3) the bears gave up 69 errors this season, the middle of the infield gave up 25 of those errors which should an area of focus

4) coach spencer is to be applauded for her diverse recruiting to berkeley & the fun insane bench energy but her role as the 3rd base coach running the bears out of innings with dumb azz base running decision making es no bueno, ay caramba

5) my favorite player/fellow fashionista tatum anzaldo & the future of cal softball elon butler need to work on their overall games to become 1st team all pac 12 honorees in 2024

I agree with all of this.

Clean up the defense, find a true #2 behind Roelling and while I love the aggressive approach…make some smart decisions on the bases and we are a guaranteed top 16 seed next year.

Oklahoma is the undisputed no.1 team in the USA playing at home. The softball equivalent of the Alabama football team, winning back-to-back national championships, and now going for a 3-peat.

Cal got more hits (5) and more runs (3) than the other two teams who played Oklahoma in this Regional, and was the first team to score 3 runs in one inning against them all season

This is a wrap for the season for the California softball team, who will head home with their heads held high. This team is trending up!

coach bloesch's successful recruitment of multiple high gpa true student athletes for cal's monster offensive line will be the key to the bears 2024 high school class which is targeting a premium prioritized 8-10 commitments of which the majority will be secured this summer prior to the fall 2023 season

the trench workers already got a 2024 commitment from 3.8 gpa tyler knape from calveston who is gonna take his official visit to berkeley on june 8-11th with high priority prospect 4.0 gpa david abajian...5.4 gpa (not a typo) samir camacho who is also from calveston is gonna take an official visit the following week to berkeley on june 15-18th

Maybe the one King (OL) sees we just got a King (RB) and is worried about himself being a second King.

OTOH, maybe the one King sees himself as the logical successor to the first King, in what could be a long line of Kings.

Really, I bet nobody within a cyber-mile of here ever thought we'd be going after two Kings at the same time.

2023 cal basketball head coaching search:

the original candidate that wuz offered the job wuz randy bennett who in my opinion is a hard-nosed technically savvy basketball mind but also an old white guy that has been unethical his entire career & a lousy fundraiser cuz he's ******* unlikeable...basically he's a more successful version of fox

when he basically backed out of the deal, then it got offered to mark masden who is bringing positive energy to the fanbase & selling his ability to coach up guys for the nba...mad dog has assembled a hungry young (unlike fox who stubbornly hired the oldest coaching staff in college basketball with 200+ years on planet earth) staff (which reflects his personality) that has successfully recruited every target other than aziz to this point with trey woodbury still in play

indisputable top 3 punter in the 2024 class 4.72 gpa kaynon floyd from horizon high school has been extended an actionable offer by asu special teams coach charlie ragle, this means that with his other actionable offers that a preferred walk on offer from cal most likely won't work in securing his signature

coach tinker is hopefully working around the clock to build a relationship with floyd, he got only 3 specialists positions to actively recruit...kicker with michael luckhurst is good to go for the next 3 years & long snapper with david bird is good to go for the next 4 years, identifying an all american punter should be his daily #1 priority in the offseason

but shocky don't trust coach wilcox & his staff with special team decisions, the bears got outkicked on field goals in both the south bend & boulder losses which contributed to the team's losing record last season...the criminally insane decision to start the low trajectory with limited length dario longhetto is gonna be the answer to the following california golden bears trivia question in 20 years from now "name the bear that started in 2022 instead of 10 time nfl all pro placekicker michael luckhurst?"

and going into the transfer portal every season is a 100% surefire strategy to bring in a good but not great punter, this program needs standouts with its razor thin win margins

i've played golf a dozen+ times with former nfl kickers/punters that live/visit north scottsdale, they all love golf because of the similarities of the 2 sports...the golf swing is a lot like the kicking motion, the more technically sound it is the more repeatable/reliable it is during competition

the average nfl hang time is 4.4, floyd is already kicking at that level...last season he averaged 50+ yards on punts which ranked him 3rd among high schoolers in the nation

so when kanyon floyd returns (family attended the stanford big game & also cal's 2024 junior day) to berkeley on saturday june 4th, justin & marshall need to bring in a former nfl kicker like ryan longwell (who is already helping the program), doug brien, bryan anger, etc. to evaluate his kicking upside...is he truly a generational talent with all american potential for 4 years (4.72 gpa guy is gonna earn a haas biz ad degree) with nfl draft day upside & therefore an actionable cal offer is warranted?

yeah elite punting can change the field position multiple times in a game

anger management#

big time 2024 recruiting miss/player personnel evaluation failure by the staff including cherrington & tinker

floyd averaged 50.3 on 43 punts last season at horizon high school yet tinker told kanyon that the staff would only extend a 2024 pwo offer despite noone on the staff ever bothering to visit phoenix & watch him kick in person

watch this 70 yard field goal, this is a nfl level strength leg

We are focusing on 4th string qbs from Utah that have never played a snap and 5th string slow rbs from the Big 10. We need OL talent now! And what a miss on Floyd, unbelievable

I can't imagine anyone rating our running game so poorly ... But maybe they are weighting it significantly based on o-line strength. I mean, UCLA has a good transfer coming in but we have Ott godd@mnit! Only explanation is o-line but luckily we just landed our 4th string QB!
Big C
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It does say "Running Back Unit", so I'm assuming it is not including OL ("Running Back production" or "Running Game").

Ott is top shelf, no question, but it's looking like the secret's out about the availability of Cardwell and Williams-Thomas (to start the season, at least).
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
goldy, the monster's thoughts are as follows:

1) luke bottari put up insane passing numbers at san mateo, getting him as a 2 year walk on is a solid recruitment...the berkeley pipeline to them fightin' benjis is flowing

2) due to the serious injuries to cardwell & williams-thomas, it's absolutely critical that there's now running back depth to compete this late summer/fall for the #2 snaps behind superstar jaydn ott...nobody in coach at's room is 5th string right now, it's absolutely ******* wide open behind my favorite poly

3) offensive line talent is the highest priority, the staff got a legit transfer portal candidate that will be officially visiting berkeley very soon...coach bloesch & coach saffell also got 3 official visits lined up with blue chip/high gpa trench workers scheduled for june with a 4th visit also in the process of getting scheduled for the critical 2024 class

4) the staff totally ****** up the recruitment of kanyon floyd...this is arguably the top punter (visited ohio state, notre dame, michigan & washington this summer) in the united states that visited berkeley twice on his own dime for the big game & cal's 2024 junior day...floyd got a 4.73 gpa & in interest in the haas b-school just like long snapper david bird & kicker michael luckhurst, there's zero chance players with these academic profiles will ever enter the portal if they're accepted into haas

kanyon wuz scheduled to visit berkeley for a 3rd time on his own dime again for the cal specialist camp in early june, the staff would've have an opportunity to make an evaluation in person at that time since nobody went to floyd's spring ball practices at horizon high school

tinker did a lazy azz job of building a relationship with kanyon, he's got 3 scholly specialists, he doesn't have time to talk a potential future nfl punter?...but he's new to the program unlike cherrington & wilcox
Econ141
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Shocky - any idea why we couldn't get this guy who committed to UCLA (believe we offered)? Is our future ambiguity in terms of conference affiliation having a noticeable impact on recruiting? Assume it's easy for UCLA to say - hey, we will be in the big boy league next year ...

the monster made a post a month ago wondering why there aren't any interviews with james arthur knowlton, that post has since disappeared but no worries here are my questions & the responses from beth tafolla-voetsch the senior associate athletics director & chief development officer reprinted in their entirety (beth's answers are in italics)

question: I've been told my multiple major donors that Knowlton has been allegedly been told by Jennifer Simon-O'Neil that "for every dollar spent on men's basketball that a dollar needs to be spent on women's basketball," I'd like to get to the bottom of that misinterpretation of Title IX which is not shared by any other University in the nation.

answer: We need to invest in our men's basketball program and our commitment to gender equity won't impact our commitment to a successful men's basketball program. It should be noted, the law does not require us to spend the same amount of money but does require the experience of student-athletes to be equitable. We believe in gender equity and are committed to equitable experience for our student-athletes.

question: I'd also like to know if Jennifer Simon-O'Neil has signed off any academic silver bullet admissions for any incoming women's athletes during the last 5 years and if so how the compliance team is monitoring her potential engagements with those families to ensure there are no Varsity Blues repercussions.

answer: We would ask you to please reference the Cal Athletics Department Policy Manual that we shared with you last fall.

question: Would also like Markeisha Everett's marketing plans for Cal football and basketball, how come both programs are not making inroads in selling tickets with those without a Berkeley affiliation (particularly families) that are priced out of buying Golden State Warriors tixs and with the departure of the Oakland Raiders?

answer: Our pricing model for football and basketball is reflective of the market we are in and we have affordable tickets and payment plans for fans.

question: How are these 2 market share spaces being systematically pursued for season tix/gameday tixs selling opportunities?

answer: We continue to do market research and implement strategic plans to make us competitive in the market.

question: Why does she (Markeisha Everett) still got a 11 person communications team, can the coaches of these non revenue sports not write their own gameday reports which would allow this department to be rightsized to a couple of employees like her peer institutions that don't have Big 10 financed affluence?

answer: Our athletic communications staff has a myriad of duties in addition to writing game recaps and their work helps ensure our coaches can focus on our student-athletes.

question: Has Tom Lowry borrowed any funds either externally or internally from the University during the last year and if so what are the repayment terms for that debt?

answer: Yes, the department has. Please contact the Campus CFO to inquire about the repayment terms for the bridge loan we took from the campus in FY22.

further update: I've asked Beth for a one or two sentence response summarizing the total dollars that have been borrowed from the Central Campus.

question: Was Coach Charmin Smith's contract extended another year like other coaches due to COVID and when does her current contract expire?

answer: Yes all coaches including Coach Smith's contract was extended due to the pandemic.

question: What steps is the Athletic Department taking to reduce costs given the uncertainty of future revenue flow?

answer: We continue to monitor the changing landscape of college athletics and will continue to review and adapt when necessary. We are always looking for ways to increase revenue and hold down costs. Over the past three years, we have instituted hiring slowdowns, temporary pay reductions for coaches/staff, and reductions to sport and administrative operating budgets in order to balance revenue with expenses.

question: Will Knowlton consent to an interview with me?

answer:

as this transparent conversation indicates beth is an exemplary senior employee doing her best in a challenging work environment with both of the department's top 2 ranked bureaucrats currently under investigation by the chancellor's office which will hopefully result in their terminations & potentially even criminal charges

when the con artist & o'neil are walked to their cars, andrew mcgraw will be hired as the next athletic director to bring focus to the revenue sports of football & basketball while downsizing the currently financially unsustainable 30+ sports with beth tafolla-voetsch promoted to the #2 position within the department

the curse of the red baron (shut up, shocky)#
latest update: former air force employee/current athletic department cfo tom lowry is now refusing to share with me in a sentence or two the total amount borrowed by the athletic department during the 2022 fiscal year & the general terms of the repayment

i've made a public records request for this information & also emailed the cfo of the central campus with a carbon copy to lowry requesting this simple information that should less than a minute to share with me

at a time of declining conference revenues/future uncertainty & less projected future donations to the athletic department (dollars will instead flow nationwide to nil collectives) it is financially reckless that knowlton decided to borrow money that will never have the funding for repayment rather than address the real issues of 30+ financially unsustainable sports, non performing coaches like charmin smith and costly buyouts due to his mismanagement of fox's contract & bureaucratic bloat within the department

answer: We continue to monitor the changing landscape of college athletics and will continue to review and adapt when necessary.

Plus the fiscally irresponsible Wilcox extension (that we hope turns out to be a lucky win, like his hiring Mark Madsen) and the criminal/fiscally irresponsible ignoring of complaints of abuse by swimmers before giving McKeever a record contract.

Lachlan Wilson averaged 43.8 yards per punt in 2022. And his career average is 44.3 in actual college games. I am not a fan of scholarship punters. At least HS recruits on scholarship. Floyd is no doubt a very good HS punting prospect. With the transfer portal the availability of experienced college punters should remain solid. I expect Cal to be active in that market.

I appreciate the sentiment but until our OL and QB rooms are finally (ever) legitimately fixed I'm incapable of getting too worked up about a Punter's recruitment.

The Cal Men's Golf team needs a major rally over the last few holes to grab 5th place from Pepperdine. Fingers crossed, but unlikely.
They came up three shots short.
A good performance, IMHO, considering they were playing with two juniors, two sophs and a frosh. Zheng and Du should be playing a full national amateur schedule this summer, if they can afford to, in order to get additional seasoning for next year. Those two, along with the two new additions who are the nos. 1 and 10 juniors, should provide a solid core to make a run at NCAAs.
And right to my point, Sampson and Aaron won the USGA Four-Ball Championship today, joining Ben Anh as Cal players to win USGA titles.

One of the other kids also won the Silverado Amateur earlier this week, per Walter Chun's latest newsletter.

This team has a chance to make some noise in 23-24.
