calalum, the self reporting zoom call violation & penalties for the football program along with the attempt to significantly reduce the football training table dollars in the last 30 days are yet more attempts by the evil as **** jennifer simon-o'neil to derail the revenue programs in favor of her empire of olympic sports

beyond her role in enabling mckeever to create a hostile racist environment for women's swimmers, jenny has also told general knowlton that the nil dollars should be equally shared with all sports & also that the men's & women's basketball recruiting budgets need to be equal in order to be in compliance with title ix (an interpretation not shared by any other university in the united states of america)

right now multiple women's teams are poorly run ****shows:

women's basketball: failed to measurably increase attendance despite this past season's generational squad, has a head coach who is an introvert that cannot raise nil funds & the hiring of an unqualified marketing director in markeisha everrett

women's softball: multiple portal entrants today including the team's leading homerun hitter tianna bell, simon-o'neil has no ability to fundraise nil dollars with her unlikeable arrogant personality

women's gymnastics: head coaches leaving to clemson & roster retention under attack, once again no relationships in place to raise funds for the program

women's volleyball: 15-17 record last season & 7-13 in acc play

women's field hockey: 7-10 record last season & 1-6 in acc play

women's lacrosse: 6-10 record last season & 0-9 in acc play

women's track & field: tied for 12th place in the acc indoor championship last season

women's cross country: 15th place in the acc tournament last season

women's sand volleyball: there's no dedicated basketball practice facility in berkeley but o'neil is tryna get a new sand volleyball facility built for the maybe 100+ fans

women's swimming: lawsuits from the families of former swimmers with suicidal iderations against the corrupt athletic department senior management until the end of time

in an accountable organization, jennifer simon-o'neil would've been fired long ago

yet the chancellor somehow thinks berkeley alums are gonna endow all 31 sports despite the vast majority of them failing by every possible metric

cal is the only school in the nation with a larger men's golf endowment (the stonebrae tpc dedicated practice facility will also benefit the women's golf team) than the football program and that has absolutely nothing to do with the ****tards knowlton & simon-o'neil

empire of dirt#

The best path seems to be to right size the department. Keep only the NCAA/ACC mandated sports and a few others (golf, aquatics) and eliminate the others or reduce to club status. That is a big step for Lyons. He does not want to do that.
He is on the record saying Men's sports need to be fully endowed. How does that equal "he does not want to do that?"
You don't consider "Title IX" as part of your "mandated" equation? Why would you not want the "others" to be the sports that have the most support/endowment, and therefore the least amount out of pocket?

I'm not sure what point mbBear is making. My assumption is that Lyons' comment reflects his assumption that Title IX remains in force, and that to the extent men's sports are retained through contribution endowments, the women's sports that need to remain in order to comply with Title IX will have to be paid for by the school, if those sports don't raise money on their own. Yes, Simon is a lousy administrator, by most accounts. But I'm not sure a different assistant AD would result in the women raising more money. Basketball maybe, if it was marketed better. But the reality is under Title IX, the women's non-revenue sports don't need to raise money, so I don't think they have much incentive to do so. It''s also my impression that a lot of the academic donors who are also big non-revenue sport donors are to sports on the men's side (rugby, crew, aquatics, water polo). Lyons is trying to keep them happy, which complicates figuring out what to do with the sports budget.

The McKever stuff is terrible. But as for results women's swimming is on an upswing. Arriving next year will be the #1, #2, #8, and #9 recruits in the 2025 class. Coach Durden is in charge now and he knows how to win. I think swim is the one sport other than rubgy that really consistently works at Cal for some reason.

Responded to a post that had no mention of Title IX as a consideration. My opinion is that what Title IX looks like going forward is a pretty big X factor, especially if the Department of Education is eliminated. But even in recent years, the Title IX criteria has changed, options etc .
I don't understand your men's sports point: Lyons is on the the record as saying a men's sport has to be fully endowed to exist. That's eliminates the "keeping people happy" factor does it not?

Right... getting Durden to over see both was really smart. If that's Jk who made that happen, good for him (don't worry, not saying it was "job saving".)
Rowing especially, and water Polo to a extent probably fall into the "works" category? My 2 cents: you can't discount international recruiting in any of those sports..

Part of my comment relates to the definition of "fully endowed." Some here have said that donors to a men's sport should also be required to pay enough to support the parallel women's sport. But I suspect that if a significant overall donor to the school, on the order of the Spiekers or the Goldmans, only was willing to support the men, Lyons would put up the money for the women, in order to keep that donor happy. I'm still not convinced that any sports will be cut. I also still think that if we ever get to the point where all the non-revenue sports were self-supporting, you might see less support for football and basketball, because the need for revenue would be less.

The world where the sports are all fully endowed is as likely as Cal selling out every football game (and men's basketball) so that the revenue stream is beyond our imagination.

The huge reduction in Federal spending in education and research is going to hit Lyon's budget hard. I really don't think he will be able to continue to subsidize the athletics department from the central campus (beyond the subsidy for CMS payments). Lyon's saying men's sports only need to be fully endowed for themselves fails to recognize that those sports create the requirement for a counterbalancing womens' sport under Title IX. Drop a men's sport and you can drop a women's sport and save money. He is an economist, he must understand that. It is alarming that he is not getting out in front of this and at least telling the big donors to men's sports that they need to endow a connected women's sport or there is a risk that with future budget cuts both teams will be cut. That would just be truthful, even if he would try to save both even if they aren't fully endowed. Worst case you get more money donated.

However, I would not be at all surprised if Trump/the GOP controlled Congress repeals Title IX despite making their "concern for fairness for female athletes" such a big part of their recent campaigning.

Chancellor Lyons could hire McKiney and Company for a million dollars plus consulting study or just read this **** for FREE.

Rightsizing the department to a financially sustainable number of sports programs in full compliance with Title IX.

Programs to be prioritized:

1) Football (118 counters): The HIGHEST priority for all future expenditures.
2) Men's Basketball (21): Revenue growth potential with Coach Madsen.
3) Women's Basketball (14): WBNA growth is explosive, Cal's WBB program is currently poorly marketed by the worthless bureaucrats Markeisha Everett & Jennifer Simon-O'Neil.
4) Men's Golf (11): The $37,000,000 current endowment is the highest of all Cal sports teams including football.
5) Women's Golf (6): Significant donor support
6) Women's Gymnastic (15): Championship program
7) Women's Swimming & Diving (32): Championship program
8) Men's Swimming & Diving (38): Championship program
9) Women's Volleyball (17): Required by the ACC for membership
10) Men's Tennis (11): Significant donor support
11) Men's Water Polo (34): Championship program
12) Women's Rowing (60): Huge roster "counters" is key to overall Title IX compliance.
13) Women's Softball (23): Growth sport in the United States with high school females.
14) Women's Tennis (10): Championship program
15) Women's Water Polo (24): Championship program
16) Women's Soccer (31): Growth sport in the United States with high school females.

Programs to be terminated/reclassified as Club teams:

1) Baseball (46 counters): Terminated. The original $18,000,000 fundraising to save the program has been spent and the program talent gutted by the MLB draft and transfers. Evans Diamonds should be "sold" to the Central Campus to burn down the massive debt liabilities incurred by Knowlton with zero probability of future revenues to repay this debt as it becomes due and repurposed for the greater good of the University.
2) Men's Gymnastics (23): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.
3) Men's Rowing (69): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.
4) Rugby (53): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.
5) Men's Soccer (38): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.
6) Men's Track and Field (58): Terminated. Edwards Field should be "sold" to the Central Campus to burn down the massive debt liabilities incurred by Knowlton with zero probability of future revenues to repay this debt as it becomes due and repurposed for the greater good of the University.
7) Women's Track and Field (57): Terminated. See above.
8) Women's Beach Volleyball (18): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.
9) Women's Cross Country (16): Terminated
10) Men's Cross Country (13): Terminated
11) Women's Lacrosse (34): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.
12) Women's Field Hockey (28): Reclassified as a club sport with no AD financial support.

with the bears now safely in winson-salem & getting their body clocks rite with east coastie acc time, now is a good time to tell you again about the worst thing i ever did in berkeley

and with that being said, this isn't gonna be a pretty story

so shocky wrote a paper for bibliography 128, children's literature, and in rereading it felt it was a technically sound paper but that it lacked interest for the reader...so i totally fabricated & included the following opening paragraph:

"I must confess that I was made uneasy to see Anne Franks's The Diary of a Young Girl on the reading list for this class. Seeing the title on the list raised several burning questions in my mind. Why had I never read this famous book? Why had my father (after a heated and lengthy debate with my mother behind closed doors) removed this work off my bookshelf as a child? It seemed to me that the answers to these questions were somehow linked to my now deceased grandfather. Although my parents never talk about him, I remembered from various bits of information pieced together that Grandpa was a figure of dubious distinction in Hitler's brass during WWII. So I was forced to think. Why were my parents, particularly my father, so reluctant to talk about my grandfather? Could the answers to my grandfather's cloudy role in Germany during WWII be found in The Diary of a Young Girl which was so mysteriously taken off my bookshelf as a child?''

and i also rewrote the following closing paragraph:

"But despite her difficult and sometimes cruel life, Anne Frank did not feel sorry for herself and she never gave up. This is a worthwhile message for both adults and children alike. All in all, The Diary of a Young Girl is a sensitive, well written, and compelling self-portrait of a brave and spirited young girl, that at least for me, will always hold a special place on my bookshelf."

absolutely none of this is true...although i got a german last name in schulz, nobody in my family has ever had any connections with any racist groups...i grew up in a culturally mixed family that celebrates individuality & diversity, i'm a ******* mutt raised by a japanese tiger moms (also a berkeley grad, 1st in her family to graduate from college grew up poor as **** in the city by the bay)

so what did my teachers say in grading the paper?

the professor: "This a fine review, not only perceptive in its commentary but in itself very well written. I hope you will keep on writing, perhaps professionally? A+"

the teaching assistant: "Your paper was very perceptive and moving because the book had a great impact on you. Though you did not generalize about non-fiction, you approached this particular book in a sensitive and understanding way. Thank you for sharing this highly personal and emotional reaction-it was very important for me personally as an Isreali jew, well versed in the literature of the holocaust, to read your reaction to the subject. The book has made you think, grow up, seek further information, and if it has instilled in you the determination not to let the horrible and shameful history repeat itself, then it has served the purpose Anne's father had when he published her diary. A+"

i'm a flawed person but i know i need to set the record straight even if it means that i'm gonna flunk the class so i go to the ta's office hours

i walk in the door & i'm blown away...aubrey (mid to late 20s) is the cutest girl on planet earth (petite & curvy brunette yoga female with sparkling eyes & a dazzling smile) & we talk/laugh for about an hour about our favorite authors, recent concerts & the personalities of doggy dogs...but i never tell her my paper is full of ****, i can't stand the thought of her hating me so quickly

so i ask her if she would like to go bike riding with me at muir woods & stinson beach that weekend (with the idea that i would tell her the truth & also see her in a bikini) & she tells me she would love to go out with me but that the university code of professional standards does not allow teachers to date students

i don't give up that easily so i suggest we bring our doggy dogs, surely there can be no policy against our doggys hanging out together, right?

https://instagr.am/p/BxSgywLBG5x
she looks at me with sad eyes & tells me "this isn't going to happen, it can't happen" and we say our goodbyes

fast forward to a couple of summers ago & shocky takes his daughters shay & taylor to anne frank's house in amsterdam...i write & leave a note to both anne frank & the teacher's assistant apologizing for my actions

you every do anything worser in berkeley?

don't be a dumb azz#

In fact, this a giant excuse for an athletic department that doesn't succeed at athletics. If one of Lyon's students. had produced this in a case study class, he would have kicked it back saying, "This does nothing for your organization".

2025 charles schwab pga tournament at colonial: 2nd round update

michael kim (69, tied for 62nd, made the cut!!): so michael pulls/hooks his drive on the iconic par 4 18th hole of the authentically restored by gil hanse colonial layout into the deep left rough & then can't stop his 2nd shot outta the rough which then bounds 35 feet over the green...knowing he needs a birdie to have any chance of making the cut, kim then holes out his flop for an improbable world class 3!!

this is really important because right now michael is #55 in the official world golf rankings (collin is #4, ben is #43 & max is #83) & needs strong play this weekend to move up in his quest to get an invitation to the july british open at royal portrush in northern ireland (the world's top 50 players automatically qualify)

kim got his 2025 us open invitation to oakmont on monday, the very best california golden bears compete on the largest stages on planet earth in the game of golf & are successful...that's because the discipline & unreal focus that's required to compete in the classrooms of berkeley is the same skillset that's necessary to reach ur potential in the golf world (this also explains why stanford also gotta lotta guys on the pga tour right now)

2025 ncca championship at la costa: 1st round update

after the 1st round at the gil hanse reimagined (it wuz pretty ******* mediocre back in the day) legoland carlsbad course, the bears are still in contention after a STRONG 1st day out...cal is tied for 8th place outta 30 finalists schools, after 54 holes the field is trimmed to the top 15 teams & then the final 8 teams compete in match play for the national championship

daniel heo (tied for 12th place) played like a fearless doggy dog playing his final nine with 5 birdies & a flawless 31 en route to a 69!!

despite not bringing his a game, ziqin zhou battled like a cornered doggy dog with no giving up & got it to the house for a team scoring 74...our young phenom is gonna green light it tomorrow, let's ******* go!!

it's not a surprise at all to shocky that the bear tied for 4th place after a pga level playing 68 is charlie berridge...the 6'5" team captain is graduating in computer science (which is a wildly challenging major kinda like the haas biz school) & got the team's highest gpa...it's great news that charlie is gonna RETURN for a 5th season!!

charlie focused on ice hockey growing up (which explains why he got no teeth & learned how to fight) in scarsdale (home of quaker ridge which is arguably better than winged foot west & east and the criminally underrated fenway) & wuz not recruited by high d1 schools for golf

and then in his 1st tournament at shocky's beloved maidstone (the sand dunes ecosystem beautifully rested by coore & crenshaw) in east hampton berridge shot a 92, ay caramba!!

yeah charlie got the **** knocked outta him in his 1st collegiate round but he's battled back from taking a bunch of punches to playing today like one of the top golfers in the nation!!

real talk: the #49 ranked cal men's golf team is the 2nd worstest ranked team among the 30 programs competing for the 2025 national championship, NOBODY (except coach wilson & coach ireland along with shocky) is expecting them to do **** at legoland

the bears r truly playing with house money, guys should come out today with SMILES on their faces & enjoy/celebrate the moment with their teammates with 100% freedom to play the game of golf that they truly love with focused creativity!!

the guys with crazy azz pressure r the low gpa dumb azzs at #2 ranked oklahoma state who got no futures if professional golf don't work out for them, they've put all their cards in one very small basket that don't got much room for error

yeah picking up balls on the pga frisco range at nightfall at age 30 still tryna play mini tours while living in moms basement is not much of future for the candy azz soft academically cowboys with worthless degrees

2025 ncca championship at la costa: 2nd round update

FUN afternoon with coastal breezes (gusting to 20 mph) in carlsbad with vandalus while walking all 18 holes/coaching up/leading the cheers for true freshman phenom ziqin "eric" zhou who played with collin morikawa like precision shotmaking (leaving himself uphill putts on most holes) & pga level course management (other than laying up with less than driver into a knarly fairway bunker lie on the dogleg right par 4 13th hole & getting short sided & barely escaping with a par 5 on the scoreable 18th hole) en route to a near flawless 67 on a 7500 yard golf course with greens stimping 12+!!

honestly zhou might be the next california golden bear to successfully compete on the pga tour with continued development during his collegiate career in berkeley, the most impressive part of his game are his bullet low ball flight trajectory 2 irons which are only possible because of his fundamentally textbook swing & elite +1 athleticism

yeah shocky is kinda loud cheering for his bears (college tournament crowds are kinda more muted/quiet than the pga tour) & after a couple of enthusiastic "let's go eric, let's do this, go bears" after a couple of holes ziqin's mom who is visiting from china introduced herself & we ended up fist bumping after quite a few of his successfully holed putts...her son is a big fan of coach wilson & intends to major in economics...while walking down the 18th fairway mrs zhou gave me & vandy absolutely tasty pork dumplings from her iced backpack which rival anything in hong kong, it's good to be a hungry california golden bear!!

the 10th place bears are still in a position to qualify for the 8 team match play after 72 holes, gotta get some production from the #5 spot in the starting line up tomorrow...great chatting also with coach desimone (looking healthy!!), blue shirting charlie bundy (who multiple sources tole me will be a key factor in the playing rotation next season, charlie will hear back back from the haas biz school in july re: his application) & wiry 2026 commitment graham christopher (we talked at length re: his need for loading up on daily protein grams)

2025 ncca championship at la costa: 3rd round update

after a strong scoring start on the back nine all 5 bears had an epic COLLAPSE on their final nines playing the front nine in 19 over par & dropping from within the top 8 teams qualifying for match play all the way down to 17th place & narrowly missing the cut (only the top 15 teams advancing)

the good news is that ziqin "eric" zhou currently in 19th place will still play tomorrow while competing for the 2025 individual scoring ncca championship...good luck to eric & his moms lisa!!

the bears will learn a lotta valuable lessons from this bitter end to the season, guys came on strong late in the season & with a relentless offseason of hard work both on the golf course & in the s&c program (surprising that the program is not coaching up its players to monitor their daily protein grams, literally every pga tour player living in north scottsdale can immediately tell u how many grams of protein they've consumed every day & their trackman ball speeds) will be better equipped for a return visit to legoland in 2026...no es bueno that coach michael wilson & coach peter ireland r better physically constructed than all their players with the exceptions of xiqin & charlie (who also happen to be the top 2 returning bears next season)

real talk: college play is usually played on 6,600 to 7,000 yard courses set up with minimal to no rough unlike the usga us open/amateur & pga tour which are played on 7,100 to 7,500 yard courses with punishing juicy rough which places a premium on driving accuracy & clubhead speed to escape the rough...a majority of the current bears lack the clubhead speed to escape from championship level rough due to their lean wiry frames compared to the elite programs stockier players shocky saw at la costa...like cal's monster offensive line, the bears gotta get bigger & stronger with their bodies while building up core strength/flexibility thru yoga/meditation practices

cal's monster class update: the following message has been received from greg richardson

Bill,
It doesn't work that the Monster thread has you posting 25 of the last 26 times. We're a community, a place for discussions, we don't host individual blogs. I'd suggest you build up your Twitter or IG following or go to WordPress or somewhere else so you can opine on anything you want whether people want to discuss things with you or not. Happy to have you stay, but you are no different than everyone else in the BI community, you have to follow our terms of service. If I see 10 or more posts in a row without anyone else responding, I'm going to have to lock the thread and give you a time out.
Greg

real talk: apparently richardson is intent upon cancelling cal's monster class for potentially a 3rd time, any disruption aka "time out" will be my final post on this board

readers of the monster always have the option of posting on this thread in order to comply with the latest rules but that's not my call
shocky has now posted 9 consecutive times & cannot post again on the monster thread at this time, there needs to be more reader postings/engagement

fun fact: next weekend is the critical KEY football recruiting official visits to berkeley extravaganza with 10 4 & 5 star high school prospects scheduled at the claremont hotel...the results of this weekend will affect the # of actionable offers during the next 2 recruiting weekends in early june

Shocky, there is an article on Stephen Domingo on the beasketball board that you would enjoy. A great example of the value of a Cal education (Haas MBA) can have for athletes no matter their level of success professionally.

Looking at the results there is an interesting angle, no B1G school made the cut (4 of the top 5 are from the SEC with ASU from the Big 12). All the teams are from the SunBelt (the Sunbelt per wikipedia is the belt of states stretching from Virginia south through Florida, west to Texas and northwest through California.

2025 hopefully can be viewed as a transition year for Cal. Zhou, Berridge, Cong and Heo are all back, and there is a highly regarded transfer and a highly ranked frosh recruit as well. All are good to solid players that can play at the top level. Expectations should be raised for the 2026 season.
