Cal has been trying to do it this way under Wilcox. I get it is harder when you cannot take lesser academically qualified players. But he has hired poor offensive assistants, held onto them too long and completely failed to adapt to the modern college game.
He hired an NFL retread (Musgrave) that tried to force an NFL style offense on a program that was not set up to run this type of offense. And he tried to do it KNOWING they had a poor OL coach (McClure) that could not teach and communicate the skills and communications necessary to run that style. Once those 2 were removed the offense took a noticeable step forward.
Despite the evidence all around the conference, Wilcox was very slow to utilize the portal. Felt it would be harmful to the culture and the portal was filled mostly with low charcacter me first players. UCLA and OSU were classic examples of how to improve your program with good portal recruiting. Oh and BTW the culture on this 2022 Cal football team was the worst of his tenure. Losing has a way of eating away at a culture.
Wilcox has had this OKG philosophy. He has gone out of his way recruit high character players that value the Cal degree. What he has done to date has been inneffective. They want to relationship recruit. Sounds great. They spent the better part of 3 years recruiting Rashid Williams. UW hired Jamarcus Shephard as WR coach and he got a commitment from Williams in just a few months of recruiting. The pitch they have used is tired and needs to be modernized. Wilcox to date has not had a single recruit of his get drafted for the NFL. That is pathetic. A P5 program with the NFL legacy Cal has and not one Wilcox recruit gets drafted. That is poor evaluation. Despite the many years of losing Cal has produced many significant NFL stars. Not under this crew.
Now he has hired 3 young offensive assistants. All are in their 30's. All have had some success but are now trying to recruit to this program in a P5 conference that has barely had a pulse on offense. It is 4 days from LOI day and the program has zero OL commits. They have offered more OL than any other position and they have zero. They have no QB commit.
It has taken Justin Wilcox 6 years to realize his offensive philosophy was not working. That he got 6 years is another story but that is what it took. Now they are retooling the offense. But the lack of success on offense, the general losing and new staff members make this a major challenge.
The single biggest problem with Cal football is the HC. Justin Wilcox may be a good guy, a strong DC and his stated values sound great. But the execution of the Wilcox plan has been awful. The players graduate and that is a great thing. But there should be more wins than there are. Cal is not a football factory. But it should not be as consistently bad as it is at football. Yes the administration needs to be more supportive. But Cal is bad because of who they have leading the program. Justin Wilcox has been an abysmal failure and should have been replaced at the end of the 2021 season. Instead he was extended and given a ridiculous buyout that basically ensures his employment for 2-3 additional seasons.
It is hard enough to build at Cal, but now with the transfer portal, NIL and conference realignment the task is even harder. And Cal is trying to build this with a HC that has not adapted much if at all the modern football being played.
Wilcox has been slow to change and adapt. Now he must be agile and nimble to work the portal, re recruit his best players and make sure he holds HIS staff accountable. His poor hires and the lack of accountability after are the biggest reasons the program is in the dumper. Hopefully he has now seen the light.
The hurdles at Cal may keep Cal from ever being a powerhouse. But they should not be the creampuff they have been. That is on Wilcox.

The truth is sometimes painful, for sure. However, since we will be staying with Wilcox for a while, I am hoping beyond hope that he is finally getting things figured out and that the new hires are a big success. They look really solid.
