california golden bears spring ball practice #14 update:

watching multiple pre game offensive line warm ups from feet away in the north end zone at memorial stadium last season it wuz concerning how the former o-line coach's comments were usually about effort & a lotta "attaboys," not a lotta technical teaching moments re: hand placement, etc...it's striking the difference in the last 20 seconds of this video how animated with his hands on instruction the attention to detail by coach bloesch whose built a reputation as an outstanding developer of talent

seminal moment in colin morikawa's 2023 pga season

accepted a last minute invitation to play in the 1st group this sunday morning at congaree golf club (arguably tom fazio's best design, much more edgy & natural looking with its sandy waste areas that most of his artificial formulaic work) which is an augusta national like enclave so flew to south carolina after nooner modern yoga yesterday

so decided to make the quick drive over to hilton head this morning & walk with colin morikawa in one of the 1st groups out (max homa missed the cut/james hahn made the cut)

morikawa is striping the ball as usual (he's arguably the best ball iron player on planet earth) & makes 3 early round birdies..but then his putting stroke (conventional, both hands on the grip) goes to **** again...he misses short par putts on the par 3 7th, the par 4 8th & a birdie putt on the 9th...he's visibly frustrated

then on the 10th green its goes from breaking bad to worser on a unphill left edge 10 footer as morikawa shoves the ball to the right & misses by 2+ feet...the small gallery is absolutely quiet, **** be real

so colin on the 12th green decides to revert back to the claw saw grip (stroke looks less flippy) which won the british open...he then drains 4 birdie putts in succession with shocky's roars of "go bears" echoing thru the swirling lowcounty pines, each one literally going in at the absolute center of the hole en route to a 66, colin is smiling again with a bounce in his step

morikawa (who is also an animal advocate/activist with his new wife kat) kinda played his way back into contention but way more importantly colin has found the something special he needs with his putting to springboard the ball striking haas biz ad major into potentially competing for the next 3 major championships

yeah sometimes u gotta embrace change, the future is unknowable to all of us

in evaluating player athleticism & academic achievement along with king of the hill coach bloesch's ties to texas in his quest to reconstruct the cali candy azz soft o-line into a lone star state smash mouth operation, the #1 targeted monster tackle in the transfer portal is the houston friend & teammate of cam' ron johnson (on an official this weekend to missouri) 6'5" 285 lbs trevonte sylvester from breaux bridge louisiana

sylvester played in all 12 cougar games this season (114 snaps, did not allow any sacks/qb hits in 16 opportunities) at left tackle as a redshirt freshman, he got 3 years of remaining eligibility...his mobility & violent finishing of plays stands out in his above video

trevonte is not a dumb azz, he earned american athletic conference all academic team honors

Had a terrific conversation with Fernando's mom and dad at the spring game. They talked a lot about how much he loves Berkeley and I talked (a lot) about how much we love Fernando. Our QB's have been a bit on the quiet side since Davis Webb, and even he wasn't really here long enough to totally bind the room to him (usually more than a single season project). Fernando definitely has "it." A great leader. Think he'll really develop into a good one for us.
