super fun 1st round at the 2023 scottish open at the renaissance club in north berwick, scotland

walked most of the en fuego course record 61 for byeong hun an, if you listen carefully to the above twitter feed u can hear the monster yell upon his 9th (final hole) 25 foot birdie putt, "wow, go bears"...when ben lost his pga card after the 2021 season, he went home to lake nona (above average fazio design in orlando) & finally got his body right during his 2022 season on the korn ferry tour...an absolutely pounds the ball off the tee with length (averaged 318 yards on drives today) & accuracy and his short game is creatively on point

followed max homa (and his caddie joe greiner) for all 18 holes en route to his 66 which included 2 missed 4-5 footers

on the dramatic par 4 coastal 13th hole which doglegs around the beautiful firth of forth, max & joe had a lengthy conversation about the carry yardage on homa's wedge which included the downwind 2 club wind & also the sloping right to left green site which favors a shot bounced in from the right side kickplate...then max stuffs it to 2 feet & joe is kinda giddy giving his buddy his putter in the fairway

so after max taps in for a birdie 3 & both he & joe are exiting the green walking directly towards me the following **** goes down:

greiner who looks like the guy in zz top is smiling broadly at the compliment

arrive early in the scottish summer rains to watch max homa tee off at 7:48 am off the 10th tee which is located in a corner of the property with no fans allowed within 100 yards...so when the tournament director announces "and now on the tee in the 2023 scottish open is max homa from the united states" there is zero clapping or any noise, it's dead quiet

ima watching all of this from the top row of the 6th tee bleachers (which usually seats 1000 fans, ima the only person there looking down the 10th tee box) so shocky yells "let's go, max!" with a fist pump salute

max then points at me with his driver & gives me a kinda dramatic friendly wave, all the players & caddies on the tee think this is funny as ****

anyways max shoots a 68 & is in contention at 6 under par despite missing 9 out of the his last 12 greens, his scrambling is world class but his iron plays needs to tighten up

then byeong hun an tees of in one the final groups at 2:43 pm, despite being the overnite leader there's only 3 other people on the 1st tee with him (the massive crowds are following rory who is leading the tournament)...shocky greets the 3 other fans & it turns out they are from finland & rooting for the finish star tapio in the an group...ruh roh

anyways ben smokes his laser 1 iron off the tee most of the round & other than a 2 foot missed par putt on the par 5 10th hole he's rock solid en route to a 70...an is in 2nd place at 9 under par & a top 3 finish among those that are not already qualified for the british open gets him an invitation to next week's open, he gotta lotta to play for this weekend

shocky played ardfin golf estate on the windy isle of jura on a tiny island in western scotland raged hard by the sea in completing the current golf magazine world top 100 list, that's the last 18 world top 100 lists (rankings are compiled every 2 years) now completed

ardfin is the summertime estate of a australian billionaire (kinda like james peterson in the madison beer video below) who made his fortune on wall street, it's arguably the least played course in the world after ellerston...did not see another golfer today

anyways ardfin got fescue turf but a clay surface below (not the optimal sand base) which means its not bouncy like a proper links...its spectacularly beautiful but also brutally difficult...if a foursome of golfers who usually score in the 90s (i.e. average golfers) played all 18 holes without picking up/illegal forward drops it's hard to imagine them not losing 100+ balls

great golf courses are playable for a wide range of abilities, glad ima gonna play a couple more rounds here on site the next 2 days to further study the shot vales/options

max homa (recently moved from north scottsdale to the more intown/kid friendly arcadia neighborhood) doing daddy duty with his son cam andrew after shooting a 67 which puts him in a tie for 10th place at 9 under par heading into tomorrow's final round

byeong hun an shot a 69 which puts him a tie for 5th place at 10 under par, a strong final round will hopefully place him among the top 3 of those that don't already got a spot at the british open & therefore earn an invitation to next week's open staged this year at royal liverpool in england

rite now the cal football program for the upcoming 2023 season got 37 new scholly players which is offset by 35 departures in the jay rock/t grizzly post above

this means that when fall ball starts in around 2 weeks there's gotta be 2 more publicly announced departures to make the scholly roster math work to meet the ncca max of 85 scholly football rosters, got it?
