I'm sure Hayes is better than Ott. Okay, Ott ran for 188 yards, but he needed 20 carries to do it. Hayes was just getting warmed up on his first 9 carries. If he had had eleven more, he would've gone for 288 yards!

coach walter's team is in 2nd place heading into the final round & only 3 strokes behind purdue, an opening season tournament win is within their grasp manana

the tournament's biggest story is true freshmen eric lee (the #1 ranked player in the world in the 2023 class, he's playing as an individual which is kinda like bringing jaylen brown off the bench) who gotta chance to become the 1st california golden bear in its storied history to win his 1st tournament

reality is that if eric wuz part of the 5 scoring bears instead of playing as an individual cal would not be down 3 strokes but leading by 5 strokes

We have a new conference in our future. We have an immediate campaign to secure the future of our NIL. We even have a new basketball coach, who, though he hasn't coached a single Cal game, has people excited. Football showing a real offense, at least initially.
I get the JK hate...Helen Keller would look at your thread and get the hate. And just maybe the swimming investigation will do him over.
But come on, if we ever needed optimism, isn't it now? Talking about Wyking? That's supposed to get me looking into flights for Cal basketball?

mb, luv ur positive karma/energy but the reality is that the cal athletic department is still heading towards financial bankruptcy with the current direction of still not reducing expenses (bloated bureaucracy & financially unsustainable sports that need to be cut), the 78 year old christ's comment above confirms she's more worried about her legacy than chapter 11

balance sheets/income statements don't lie, amigo

and continuing to borrow money from the central campus like the $11,000,000 loan that knowlton tole his staff to try to hide from me but wuz still unearthed thru my repeated public records requests is not gonna work, kicking the can down the road is not a haas biz school endorsed strategy on wall street

so here's the 2023 monster plan: terminate james arthur knowlton & his #2 confidante jennifer simon-o'neil and then appoint andrew mcgraw as the interim athletic director (with a significant bump in pay) & beth tafolla-voetsch (also with a bump in pay) as the administrator in charge of women's sports

a dozen plus cal fans who attended the pregame cal get together tole me at the game saturday that knowlton 100% embarzzed himself by speaking to the group about his non existent involvement in the acc invitation, he's not fooling anybody anymore including the majority of cal's largest football donors

the con artist is not very good at reading the room but then again he's an absentee bureaucrat that lives in colorado springs most of the year that has misfunded football & basketball for years among his countless mistakes with financial consequences

cal finishes the marquette intercollegiate at erin hills in 2nd place at +14 & 3 strokes behind winner chattanooga at the former us open venue

what did we learn?

1) eric lee is a generational talent, he needs to be exempt from qualifying for tournaments along with sampson...if eric wuz in the 5 player scoring lineup the bears finish +1 & win this tournament by a runaway 10 strokes...just like homakawa he rolled in clutch birdies on the 16th & 18th holes to co share the tournament championship trophy

2) sampson zheng finished at -2 for the tournament & is one of the top golfers in the nation...bet

3) the play at the 2023 us amateur (missing 64 player match play by only 1 stroke out of an elite field of 312 golfers) wuz not a fluke as emerging tony chen finished tied for 12th & is poised for an absolutely breakout season

4) true freshman from plano texas ethan fang got his promising college career started with a solid tie for 19th finish

5) ethan chung hit a lotta good shots enroute to 6 birdies in the 3 rounds but wuz undermined by 5 double bogeys, gotta do a better job with damage control/risk management in future tournaments

6) daniel heo is not gonna get married at the erin hills clubhouse someday

7) the coaching staff needs to do a better job of strategizing club selections with the team in the future on par 3s...today's 3 double bogey 5s on the par 3 9th hole cost the bears a trophy (a couple of pars would've changed the tournament outcome)...walter chun & peter ireland should've directed their players to shoot for the middle of the green on this diabolical short downhill par 3 with strong winds that wreak havoc on the aerial high flighted trajectory of short irons, the back right pin position as seen in the foto below is particularly nefarious



monster moral of the story: bringing jaylen brown off the bench & not starting him is a mistake

next tournament is in seattle on september 18th & 19th, this is shaping up to be a season for the ages

fun fact: back in the day during the cal's monster class era when multiple mcdonalds all americans wuz recruited by shocky, we wuz sitting next to coach martin's wife roberta in the 1st row behind the bears bench in a nationally televised road game in charlottesville against them #5 ranked virginia...with a minute left in the game kingsley okoroh wuz intentionally fouled, 2 free throws would ice the game in the hostile screaming sold out arena...looked at roberta & asked her if she wuz confident in the king's ability to make the 1st of the 1 plus 1 pressure free throw...she looked down at her shoes & shook her head like a little girl...king missed the free throw & the bears lost in the final seconds on a off balance dagger to the heart 3 pointer...and the next morning the local airport wuz fogged in & it took 20+ hours to fly back home to the tree fort in the desert...yeah sometimes the magic of cal basketball hurts
