econ, the institutional stanford football problem is not whether or not they can successfully recruit high school prospects, the answer to that is yes

the problem in palo alto is that without a grad cert program like berkeley that their upperclassmen with stanford degrees can't get into their grad programs (which is also a challenge for cal) & therefore enter the transfer portal as experienced collegiate football players

and that's why barrett miller played football for them california golden bears this season, ok?

the cal football program can still aggressively recruit la without games at usc or ucla anymore, it's still a 1 hour flight or a long car drive for recruits & their families from so cal to the #1 ranked public university in the world

but let's very clear about this, that's our challenge to overcome, the usc & ucla athletic directors are never gonna allow us to schedule football games with them in our lifetimes...there's no upside for them either financially or recruiting wise and they risk the possilbity of a loss at a time they will need as many wins as possible to becoming bowl eligible in the brutally tough big 10

and that's why the oregon athletic director has made it clear that the ducks aren't gonna play the nationally ranked beavers in 2024 or anytime in the next couple of decades unless the oregon legislature/board of regents mandates the game

only a completely clueless & worthless bureaucrat that is continuing to try to degrade the revenues sports in berkeley would schedule a cal game against oregon state, got it?

mr silverleaf sun angel update: asu's heavily injured offensive line gave up 8 sacks against usc that also resulted in an interception & fumble by qb drew pyne (who got 4 interceptions against fresno state the previous week under pressure)

complicating matters is that devils offensive line coach saga tuitele is not with the program, it's being called publicly "health issues" but there's a backstory (also with beau being relieved of play calling duties by dilly) there that can't be shared right now

coach sirmon needs to dial up the morgan scalley casino blitzing packages & less shoney's bend but don't break at the waistline d this saturday at noon at memorial stadium...r u gonna b there to see how this plays out???
beleaguered asu athletic director/former sports agent ray anderson (who hired his good friend & client herm edwards thereby earning placement commission which is kinda a conflict of interest) is getting pressured to retire & is gonna be gone for good

the sun angels r tired of ray & his ****

too bad the bearinsider.com isn't as tired of knowlton & his **** as is shocky
as reported here by the ultimate asu insider mr silverleaf (who is also a major benefactor to shocky's maricopa county rescue doggy fundraising), athletic director ray anderson is now gone for good

this termination wuz 100% driven by major donors telling chancellor crow that they wuz done donating to a dumb azz that allowed the football program to get on ncca probation for cheating & bobby hurley's wife getting sexually harassed by a fan with very little response by anderson

meanwhile the bearinsider.com is just gonna sit back with a "measured" approach & allow james arthur knowlton to continue to degrade the revenue sports in berkeley while concurrently sending out messages that more nil funds need to be raised...good luck with that strategy

left to right, devin "cool as **** shades" askew, jaylon "nba body w/7 assists" tyson, jalen "range to midcourt" cone, fardaws "luxury watches r tacky as ****" & jalen "let it fly" celestine

wow, this wuz a significant step forward in ball movement, unselfishly sharing the ball with one another passing up good shots for great shots (devin wuz particularly noticeable in this regards) which resulted in 15 moneyballs from behind the line...this bears team is exciting to watch & could potentially lead the pac 12 in 3 point shooting in 2023

defensively, that's a whole different story, no es bueno...daws (fouled out) & jalen (got more burned by kaleb higgins more than a george foreman grill in the 1st half, no steals on the nite) are realistically the worst defenders in the pac 12 at this time...it's pretty obvious that they did not focus on playing high intensity/embracing fundamentally sound d at their last schools, hopefully mad dog will be able to get thru to them in developing them defensively...right now there's zero chance they gonna get paid at the next level with their ineffective candy azz soft d that is a ****show of reaching with their hands, not moving their feet & low basketball iq anticipation of wut's gonna happen next

yeah daws & jalen play d like 16 year old aau "stars" in the summer circuit...and let's be real here, as grad cert students they got a fraction of the academic work of their teammates earning undergraduate berkeley degrees, they got ZERO excuses

cal state bakersfield: 2628

sluggo, bluesaxe & basketball bear/bear greg: wut's ur enlightened premium insider take on the attendance thus far this season at haas?

between markeisha's failed marketing decision to not include all students with FREE tixs to all games (the $125 student pass is far beyond the financial means of those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds) and zero successful outreach to those without berkeley affiliations (bay area residents that luv basketball that are priced out of golden state warriors gamedays at chase) & the bearinsider.com's non inclusive strategy with respects to building energy around the basketball program via recruiting (do u really think that any high school prospects read this board?) and unwillingness to call out knowlton (read the monster comments re: his direct conversation with lisa & doug goldman re: the basketball practice facility not moving forward anytime soon) attendance is actually worser than the wyking & fox eras

creating energy around a program & cultivating a larger haas gameday fan base is far more complicated than just winning more basketball games, got it?

update re: yesterday's zoom call between knowlton & the acc commish

the acc commish is encouraging cal to play more west coast teams in non conference play particularly mid majors during the middle of acc conference play

the commish fully understands (unlike the con artist) the importance of the sec football scheduling model of a-c-c-d games to ensure bowl eligibility

right now the bears for 2024 got an "a" game at auburn, a "b" game hosting san diego state & a "d" game hosting uc davis

it's absolutely critical that in cal's inaugural 2024 season in the acc that bowl eligibility is achieved from both a recruiting & fan base energy standpoint...there's gonna be another round of conference realignment in the future & if the bears aren't a perennial bowl team we're gonna be left behind, the mountain west is a death blow...reality is that cal is the acc because of the lobbying efforts of stanford's condeleezza rice & notre dame's jack swarbrick, it got nothing to do with jim or carol who wuz sitting on the sidelines with their hands in their pockets eating popcorn

so that's why not signing the oregon state and/or washington state future football game contracts that are sitting on knowlton's desk awaiting his signature should never be executed, the con artist is awaiting both schools dropping their lawsuits against the departing pac 12 schools

oregon state is a nationally ranked team that could mean cal is not bowl eligible in 2024, the bears got zero recruits from oregon in the current high school class & the fan base got zero interest in traveling to a drizzly azz truck stop town like corvallis anymore

the bears will be playing the irish in the future but not until the current notre dame/stanford series is done in 2025 & the nd tv deal with nbc is finalized...right now it's looking like 3 to 5 games during the next 12 years

the acc comish is working to replace the big 10 in the rose bowl, he's already got deals in place with the holiday bowl & the la bowl (which would be a huge boost for cal recruiting in so cal with usc & ucla games never happening again) for acc teams

not surprisingly at the end of the zoom, knowlton made a cheap shot comment about larry & george as pac 12 commishs which is ironically disingenuous coming from the worst/least qualified athletic director in the nation who plays dodgeball with every interview request

yeah the con artist is continuing his degradation of cal revenue sports, the 4th out of conference game for 2024 is absolutely critical with respects to the upward trajectory of the cal football program...he's made in clear he's not gonna cut any sports or reduce any of his massive infrastructure of worthless bureaucrats like himself & markeisha, financial comprehension/responsibility is not in his tool kit

only a dumb **** would schedule oregon state for 2024 (or extend mark fox's contract)

Shocky, excellent points on scheduling. I'm going to restate in my own words the most important and urgent takeaways, in case someone who actually talks to Knowlton reads this board.....

1) Cal should not schedule football games with Oregon St. or Washington St. in the foreseeable future.

2) Cal needs to get back to qualifying for bowl games ASAP. Thus, for 2025 Cal needs that 4th out-of-conference game to be winnable...a "c" or "d" level opponent.

3) OSU and WSU are "a" or "b" level opponents with minimal recruiting advantages to playing them. They are maybe 50/50 shots to beat either of them.

4) Scheduling OSU or WSU next year would be minimizing one of the main near-term advantages of the ACC vs. the Pac-12 for Cal: an easier path to 6+ wins, a bowl game, and early steps on the path toward rebuilding the program.

5) Thus, Cal should not schedule OSU or WSU next year, or for the foreseeable future.

6) Informed Cal fans will be pissed off at Knowlton if he schedules either OSU or WSU next year.

7) We already dislike Knowlton, but if he schedules OSU or WSU next year the pitchforks will come out for Knowlton. This will be the straw that breaks the camels back.

8) AD Knowlton: DO NOT SCHEDULE OSU OR WSU NEXT YEAR, or maybe ever.

Cal Athletic Department personnel who lurk on BearInsider: please be sure Mr. Knowlton sees this.

Unless they get into a decent conference, the Beavs and the Cougs will begin to decline... and we can maybe schedule them at that time, after they become B-- or C level opponents (wait as long as it takes). Nobody really thinks Oregon State is going to stay good for very long, do they?

Yes, I'm fine with considering scheduling them down the road, although there are plenty of schools we could play instead. I just want to be sure we make a damn bowl game in 2025....then we can go from there. I'd be okay with a more difficult schedule if/when we're good enough to make a bowl game most years.

As for how good Oregon State will be going forward....it's an interesting point. Yes, the obvious answer if that they will decline once they are no longer in a power conference. But I think the plan is to gather up a bunch of mid-major level western schools and form a conference with OSU and WSU (maybe called the Pac-something)....

....I would note that Jonathan Smith is an excellent coach who has done extremely well with recruits who generally have star ratings well below the average for P-12 teams. So will their recruiting fall off substantially from that existing level? I'm not so sure.

Secondly, if OSU plays a mid major schedule populated with games against teams like UNLV, Fresno St, Nevada, SDSU, WSU, etc., maybe they win 8-10 games every year. Maybe that's fine with their fanbase and recruiting base. Maybe they play in a low/mid level bowl every year and Smith coaches them up to maximize their talent. That already sounds like a higher level of achievement than Cal has achieved during the Wilcox era.

In that case, why schedule them? Cal would probably have a 50/50-ish chance of winning and OSU would be viewed as a team from a lesser conference that power conference schools would not get a lot of credit for beating.

So minimal upside with a significant chance of a loss. I'll pass.

I totally respect Jonathan Smith though. The guy is a leader.

zony, luv ur post, 100% that cal should NOT schedule oregon state and/or washington state, we r all watching knowlton

as recommended by the acc comish, a mid major mid season home game would be an excellent 4th occ opponent & would facilitate 2nd team player development

and here's the thing re: 2024, honestly think auburn is a tuff but winnable game on the road, already talked to hundreds of bears fans that r gonna make the september roadtrip to the deep south (our turnout is gonna be >>> than the fun ole miss sec experience at the grove (memories that r seared into our minds)...the monster's plan rite now (always subject to change, life is unknowable) is to travel with slim wadie & play coore & crenshaw's new wicker point on lake martin in alabama while flying in & out of atlanta

one of my favorite authors is greg iles who writes epic novels about the chains of the past that painfully grip the deep south from moving forward, will try to meet him if possible

yeah with the right 4th occ opponent we got a legit chance of being 3-1 and maybe even 4-0 in the occ which would mean we need only a couple of acc wins for bowl eligibility
