2024 ncca rancho santa fe regional: 3rd round update

just a magical day for the california golden bears golf program as all 5 starters competed with the steely determination reminiscent of their pga bears idols max, ben, collin & michael in advancing to the ncca finals at la costa may 24th-29th...and shocky is gonna be there for the match play rounds, not gonna miss this **** plus there's nobu downtown in the gaslamp district plus one of my favorite places on planet earth legoland

congrats to internationally tested senior sampson zheng (who got pga tour upside) on finishing 3rd & freshman eric lee standing on business coming in tied for 7th along with buc-ee's brand ambassador ethan fang shooting a clutch 70 today and jeewon park battling back from a triple bogey 7 on the par 4 8th hole to card a 71

and a special shout to fashionista lefty nathan wang on his redunkulous 67 with a birdie 3 on the monster par 4 18th hole in the final round of a ncca regional, it's clear his 71 last week at us open local qualifying at the tough as nails la purisma is accelerating nathan's confidence & development


guess wut, this team got the talent & mental discipline/fortitude that comes with a berkeley education (that's the secret sauce of cal golf, we don't got low gpa dumb azzs like those at golf factories like oklahoma state, sorry rickie) to legit compete for a 2024 national championship

that would be ziqin "eric" zhou from shenzen china who at 10 years old (see video above) got more short game than most pga tour pros, he is a cal commit & will be enrolling in berkeley later this year as part of the 2025 class

ziqin has already played in multiple professional dp tour events & competed against sampson zheng at the asia pacific amateur at royal melbourne (winner got an invitation to the 2025 masters, sampson came in 2nd after a 3 way sudden death playoff)

speaking to markeisha everett is kinda like talking to the dumbest person you've ever met in your life except that she's also arrogant...she will no doubt place the race card for her employment but the reality is that she's 100% unqualified to sell tixs/build the brand for any sport in berkeley

lastly asked everett that with the potential $40,000,000+ annual financial shortfall in the athletic department will she consider reducing the size of her bloated 11 person communications dept (which is kinda ironic since the con artist refuses all interview requests) & she tole me "absolutely not, we have 30 teams that need coverage"
foxy, thx for sharing, mark's recruitment of mike sharavjamts is potentially a game changer in building the cal basketball program's season tix holder fanbase along with engaging berkeley students while adding a talented combo threat to the line up

2024 pga championship at valhalla: 1st round update

despite 2 early bogies in the round & missing 4 outta the first 5 greens in regulation, colin morikawa battled back & hit 7 or 8 unreal perfect golf shots en route to a 5 under par 66...the biggest improvement in collin's game since graduating from berkeley's haas biz school is with his short game as he now got significantly more variety of shots in his arsenal...this up & down on the challenging par 4 17th hole wuz a key glue moment in keeping his round together & set up his majestic uphill 250+ yard soft fade fairway wood directly over the flagstick setting up a 25 foot 2 putt birdie on the 3 tiered par 5 18th hole


it should be noted that morikawa's 2 major championships victories wuz on greens that are relatively flat at both harding park & royal st georges...vallhalla places an emphasis upon ball striking but the majority of the putts only move a cup or two with mostly no major undulations, collin's game travels well to this nicklaus design (as well as muirfield village)

max homa with a very strong opening round 68 which included this bunker hole out on the par 4 15th hole, wut's not shown here in this video is that jordan spieth had literally the same shot before homa & missed it 18 inches to the right...max visibly aligned his club slightly more left & it tracked the whole way for an epic birdie


walked the morning 18 with max & the afternoon 18 with collin so did not see any of the solid 71 from ben an

kinda disappointed but also did not see elvis today, who knows maybe he'll make an appearance tomorrow on the deck of one of the highly inebriated hospitlity tents, drinking (and stumbling sideways down the many hills towards the creeks) is a common site in the bourbon capital

2024 pga championship at valhalla: 2nd round update

yeah it wuz a kinda wild azz day in the kentucky rain

as you can imagine, shocky got no interest in time wasting bureaucracy so instead of taking the pga endorsed spectator shuttle from the louisville football stadium downtown to valhalla (which is a 60-90 minutes deal each way) shocky just parked his avis in a housing development near the club & jogged a mile to get to the front gate...so there's literally nobody walking on shelbyville road & when getting to the club road entrance the security guys are yelling at me for walking on such a dangerous road

whatever...shocky just gives them his modern yoga t-rex smile & keeps moving...doggy dogs don't do shuttle buses, got it?

so the scheffler incident after the pedestrian (a vendor working the tournament) fatality on shellyville road resulted in the starting times being moved back 80 minutes so scottie could get released from the booking precinct & get back to tee off

anyways with the monster coaching him up & yelling "go bears, let's do this collin, let's roll baby!!!" after his 7 buried birdie putts collin morikawa is in 2nd place after an almost near perfect 65 which included 100% all world shotmaking...on his final hole (the uphill par 4 9th hole) collin & his caddie jj misjudged the wind which resulted in his wedge coming up short/rolling 80 feet down the hill & a bogey 5...this strategy/clubbing wuz a dumb decison particularly as the front left pin close to the false front had a backstop 10 feet behind the hole which could've been utilized by morikawa to funnel his approach back to the pin & taken the coming up short dangers completely outta the equation


ben an (currently ranked #23 in the world) continues his elite play with a 67 that included an eagle 3 on the uphill par 5 18th hole & is currently tied for 29th at 4 under par...and yeah ben also underclubbed on the 9th hole & finished with an eerily similar bogey too

max homa is also playing very well but a couple of kinda unforced errors resulted in a 70 & he's tied for 29th at 4 under par...fully expect max to make a charge this weekend


so shocky has walked 30+ muddy miles in the kentucky rain the last 36 hours & is flying home back to the desert tonite as both of his daughters shay & taylor are at the tree fort for the weekend

yeah elvis gotta be exhausted from tryna find his girl as acc defenders will be tryna chase down all american jadyn ott this fall

2025 5'11" 185 lbs running back nate shepard from mandeville high school in louisiana is gonna official visit cal on june 13th-16th


nate is not a dumb azz, he got a 4.2 gpa & is also officially tripping to duke

shepard is gonna luv the west coast with its ideal year round weather in the cosmopolitan wonderfully diverse san francisco bay area, yeah life is an adventure

2024 pga championship at valhalla: 3rd round update

playing with poise & confidence (while calmly chewing gum which facilitates proper breathing in stressful situations) collin morikawa shot a nearly mistake free (which is a remarkable achievement on a 7500+ yard course with deep lush rough) 67 & is at 15 under par & tied for 1st...yeah the haas biz ad grad is gonna be the final twosome with his so cal junior golf buddy xander, this is a comfortable pairing for the two childhood competitors

the turning point in the round wuz on the par 4 15th hole when xander (who overthinks/waggles his club too much when stressed out) airmailed a short iron over the green for a double bogey while collin rolled in this clutch birdie that did a 360 while circling the cup before theatrically dropping...let's ******* go!


morikawa's much improved short game wuz on display on the par 3 3rd hole with a chip in birdie which wuz an important bounce back after his only bogey on the day on the brutal par 4 2nd hole...this week he's #1 in the field in short game stats


a pulled drive into the left rough on the par 4 16th hole snowballed into a double bogey but max homa birdied the 18th hole en route to a 69 & is at 6 under par & tied for 29th


despite 5 birdies not a great day for ben an, he shot a 72 & is at 3 under par & tied for 54th

the future is unknowable (life is not linear) but make no mistake about it collin gotta tremendous opportunity to win his 3rd major championship & cement cal golf's growing reputation as the #1 collegiate combination of pga golf development & world class academics

let's roll, baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fun xander schauffele story: back in the day pre the cal's monster class era shocky drives topless in his broke azz lexus convertible at the speed of light from north scottsdale down the i-10 to tuscon national to watch his california golden bears compete in the arizona wildcat invitational

while walking the course shocky saw the most shocking display of beyond breaking bad sportsmanship he's ever seen during a college sporting event: the smu head coach (with his assistant coach standing next to him) yelling at a tcu golfer (from a latin america country) "why don't you come over here right now you big ***** & let's settle this right now?...yeah walk away from me you piece of ****!"

3 holes later the smu coach drives his cart over & says to me "sorry you had to witness that, we had a free drop ruling dispute earlier in the round...once again, sorry you had to experience that conversation"

shocky looks him in the eye & tells him, "your apology is NOT accepted, your not ashamed that you literally challenged a collegiate student athlete during a competition to fight you, your only embarrassed that i clearly saw what happened" before the monster walks away

a hole or two later while waiting for the green on a par 5 to clear for max homa, i visit with coach desimone (everybody loves des) in the fairway & tell him wut happened...at that point a san diego state player's dad comes on over & joins the conversation

both des & stefan schauffele (who is german/french) tell me that the smu coach is an arrogant jerk...stefan tells me that his son xander (who at that point is introduced to me with a fist bump, we're the same height) gotta japanese moms & wut nationality am i?...shocky tells them he is a rescue doggy dog of mixed descent with a japanese moms like rickie fowler who they all know too

stefan & xander are both good guys & fun to converse with during the ensuing years when our paths have crossed again...gonna be rooting 100% for collin morikawa (japanese dad/chineese moms) to win an epic 3rd MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP later today but xander is not some evil nemesis (like mr glass) in this exciting storyline on the biggest stage in golf

follow up update: shocky wrote a letter to the smu president while carbon copying the smu athletic director, the tcu president, the tcu athletic director and pro golfer/neighbor of mine tom lehman (his daughter a student at tcu at the time, they attended my son's wedding last october on the usc oppenheimer gameday) outlining wut happened & praising the tcu golfer from walking away from a potential violent physical confrontation during a ncca competition

the smu athletic director wrote me back 2 months later advising that the smu head coach had been fired
