2024 alister mackenzie invitational at the meadow club: 2nd round update

the bears enter tomorrow's 3rd & final round in 3rd place 9 strokes behind pacific which shot an unreal 28 under par in the afternoon round with a 62, 64 & two 65s, the tigers will likely not be able to continue at that pace & the bears will need to be off to the races early in the round starting with the vulnerable 492 yard par 5 1st hole with a trampoline speed slot for booming drives

in the 2nd round the bears assaulted the meadow club's 3 par 5s in an unprecedented assault, the 7 bears competing played their 21 par 5 holes in 20 under par!!!

the only bear in the individual top 10 is non team scoring daniel heo who shot a 66 & is tied for 8th...daniel shared 2nd round cal low scoring honors with talented true freshman kai hirayama who also shot a 66 despite a dumb azz double bogey 6 on the short dogleg right 363 yard slightly uphill par 4 18th hole

yeah a healthy breakfast with a couple of carbs is gonna be important to an en fuego final round, shocky's favorite breakfast venue in marin near the meadow club is the san rafael main street crepevine (nothing wrong with pasta for breakfast)...it's not bouchon bakery in yountville great but it's good enuf

EXCITING ucla football update:

in their FUN quest to lose 10+ games in their inaugural big 10 season, the ucla bruins (1-4) got their azzs handed to them in front of 110,000+ fans at penn state

this week the baby bruins host minnesota which beat crosstown rival usc trojans (3-2) on saturday

and the future is bright in westwood as the bruins lose 16 starters after the 2024 season, literally losing EVERY game in 2025 is a LEGIT possibility!!

meanwhile IMPACT wideout j-mike got shut out again (ZERO receptions in 3 big 10 games) & has now caught 5 balls on the season (3 of them in the season opener at hawaii) after catching 65 balls in berkeley in 2022...j-mike got no nfl upside (like jeremiah hunter he struggles to create separation from college defense backs) but his future of valeting cars at chateau marmont is looking bright & ****

agreed that sirmon & td before didn't rotate the inside backers, that strategy works better agains the now extinct pac 12 pro style qbs & not against elite acc scrambling qbs (the bears will also face running threat qb1s at both smu & north carolina state)

eli holstein is a very special player (and exponentially more dangerous than chase garbers when running with the ball), this season he has rushed for 255 yards on 48 carries which is a 5.5 yards per carry average which is around twice the total yardage of both cameron ward & jaydn ott

fully expect coach sirmon to adjust & give hunter snaps this saturday in steel town to keep the starters fresh for the critical 4th q...fyi barth is one of the highest gpa bears & is also very fresh with his curvy brunette yoga female girlfriend (and that's just good zony parenting)

2024 alister mackenzie invitational at the meadow club: 3rd round update

not a great day for the bears at the meadow club other an pga tour kinda 64 (including an eagle 3 on the par 5 1st hole) by non team scoring daniel heo and 67s by both matthew miyamoto & papon sawatyanon

the team finished in 4th place at 42 under par in a kinda weak 15 team field with more than half the other teams shooting lower than the bears anemic 10 under par score today

fully expecting the bears to rebound at the pacific invitational next week on october 14th-16th at the old school stockton golf & country club which will also be an absolute shootout from the tips which measure only 6,486 yards from the black tees with a par of 71

coach wilson will have some tough decisions to make in setting a starting line up with the return of senior team leader tony chen & future superstar eric zhou who made the match play portion of the 2024 us amateur & last week missed a playoff in qualifying for the 2025 masters & 2025 british open by a stroke...interesting to note that zhou has still not competed yet as a bear in a collegiate tournament, really hoping eric is in the lineup for stockton

I don't agree that we need to preserve the blueshirt years for Hampton and Eze - when did that view become conventional wisdom?

First, if those guys turn out to be good, or they decide they don't like our chance under Wilcox, or they decide they're tired of Top Dog, or someone offers them more NIL money -- they might well be gone at any point during their eligibility. Not playing guys who could help now in order to preserve redshirts or blueshirts is a thing of the past, like reading the print edition of a newspaper.

Second, we need to win NOW. I would have burned either of their blueshirt years to squeak out that close game vs. Miami. In a heartbeat!

Cade Uluave became P12 defensive freshman of the year playing the only the last 7 games last year. If they're good enough they need to play.

zony & alky, agreed that both true freshman inside backers aaron & eze need to play NOW while keeping them at the 4 game max threshold for blue shirting...the truth is that the mentally prepared hunter as is now healthy liam johnson is more game ready than the freshmen at this point in their high upside developments & need to be the 3rd4th inside backers in the rotation against pitt in steel town on saturday to keep cade & teddeye not gassed in the 4th quarter

a blown insider backer passing coverage assignment against 5'8" speedster pitt rb1 desmond reid will be a 6 point mistake

The reason they were gassed was a reflection of Cal's offense being unable to convert in the second half. Miami has superior athletic lines.
Cal won't face anyone like that the rest of year.
Time of possession and the huge difference in total offensive plays were why they were "gassed".

Again if they're good enough they'll play. End of analysis. And Uluave was a true freshman so your point is moot in that case. He was good enough and needed to play. But I don't think last weeks' situation will be repeated the rest of the season.

Shocky1

^ agreed with ur reasoning but it doesn't change the fact that it wuz a coaching mistake to not give snaps to hunter (who is more game ready than the 2 true freshmen) to keep cade & teddeye fresh in the 4th quarter...coach sirmon seems to be acknowledging that mistake & fully expect to see #31 at inside backer this saturday afternoon steel town

why is pittsburgh unbeaten (5-0) & nationally ranked??

the pitt oc runs 5'8" speedster rb1 desmond reid to the edges in wide open space & passes to him over the middle 3rd of the field when guarded by slow as **** linebackers, they are maximing his talents

cal does the opposite, the bears staff predictably runs our rb1 & rb2 intentionally into telephone poles in the heart of the opposing line (continually putting them in dangerous positions which has resulted in serious injuries to them, then the head coach talks coachspeak postgame blah blah blah football is a violent game, next man up, blah blah blah) & telegraphs swing passes to the sidelines

coach bloesch update: mike thinks the reason his rb1 who preseason wuz named the #1 rb selection in the 2025 national football league draft rushed for 2 yards on 7 carries is because we've played "three really talented defensive lines" and "we gotta execute better"

bloesch does NOT think it's because of his playcalling, wowza!!!!!!!

sounds like he's gonna add to his current 6 game playcalling streak of ZERO ******* PITCHOUTS to rb1 & rb2, wonder how that's gonna play out??

mike is an outstanding offensive line coach but with that being said his simplistic 1980s texas high school smashmouth football schemes are NOT gonna work against ELITE college teams with size & SPEED, the good news is that it will work against lower division teams like tulsa, north texas, san diego state, etc.

compounding problems is that bloesch isn't listening to anybody other than qb coach sterlin gilbert who comes from a similar texas high school coaching background/philosophy

Shocky, this is spot on and what I have been saying since the bowl game. That Bloesch blames our infective running game on the Miami DL and execution" when he repeatedly, predictably ran straight into it is almost criminally stupid. Moreover, his 5 can't beat their 9. He didn't see this by the 4th quarter? And up to then I thought the light bulb had gone off. We lost because we ran repeatedly up the middle on first and second down and got ZERO first downs in the 4th quarter other than Miami penalties against Fernando on 3rd and long sacks.

Wilcox promoting Bloesch to OC permanently when Spavital left was his laziest OC hire yet. Could he not see how critical it was that he get that hire right?

Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
calalum, coach bloesch cites the three elite defensive lines (auburn, florida state & miami) the bears played as an excuse for his insanely poor run game schemes which overlooks the fact that a little bit dinged up jaydn ott rushed 14 times for 49 yards against the uc davis aggies & then 2 weeks later southern utah's targhee lambson rushed 24 times for 149 yards against the uc davis aggies

does southern utah gotta better rb1 & offensive line than cal??...or do the thunderbirds got better schemes/playcalling than cal??

but nothing is gonna change until coach wilcox gets involved with the playcalling...hall of fame collegiate coaches like mark few & kyle willingham get involved in every aspect of their programs, justin delegates without accountability & that's how u get an annual .500 winning program

Guys, do you really expect Bloesch to sit up there and say "The main reason we haven't run the ball well is because our offensive line is below average."?

That, however, is in my opinion the primary reason we can't run the ball effectively.

That and the entire offensive philosophy that dictates that our QB hands the ball to a stationary RB who then tiptoes up to the line and looks for a hole that is usually not there. The O-line is not driving forward at the snap, they are more holding their ground. I'm not sure if you call this the RPO (Run-Pass Option) or what, but this is NOT a power running game.

The RPO (or whatever it's called) allows us, in theory, the ability to pass or run without the defense immediately knowing what we're going to do. This probably helps a lot on our pass plays. But this year it's not working on most running plays. My admittedly limited football knowledge tells me that it's mostly because our line is not strong enough to open holes, and in fact the defense is penetrating into the line and stopping the RB before he can go anywhere.

Running up the middle is great when you have the line to do it, or when the defense is on its heels worrying about the pass. We're getting neither, a lot of the time. Yeah we should try running outside a bit more. But my sense is that they will stuff a bunch of those too, for losses.

My solution, at least until Vatikani returns, is to pass first and pass often, preferably quick vertical strikes to our TEs (Dyches is awesome and way underutilized, btw) and maybe inside posts to our WRs. Get the chains moving and the defense adjusting to that and then we should be able to run more effectively.

With this line, we need to pass to set up the run.

When this happens a certain % of our inside runs with Ott and the Jet are going to be major gashes, with some going to the house.

But back to the original question....

When Bloesch says it's the opposing D-line that's the problem, that's his polite way of saying our O-line isn't good enough. And by polite, I mean that's there's no upside to telling the media that your OL sucks.

Saying we have to execute better is also code: it means "Our OL is sucking right now, but I believe in them and I know they can do better, so I'm saying they just need to execute better, because if I tell the media they suck it will not give them the confidence they need to play their best."

Shocky1

zony, agree with much of what ur saying particularly using the pass to set up the run & attacking the middle 3rd of the field in the downfield vertical passing game but the playcalling is a major contributor to the abysmal run game results

jaydn ott rushed 14 times for 49 yards against davis, 2 weeks later southern utah's rb1 rushed 24 times for 149 yards against davis

r u suggesting southern utah's offensive line is significantly better than cal's offensive line??

of course not, it's the playcalling

Good post, AZ. We are not stretching the field vertically and not doing a good job stretching it horizontally. Combine that with a somewhat subpar O-line and we have what we have. (hard to take deep shots when the QB doesn't have much time)

I agree that we need to pass more, which will set up the run. Bloesch is running up the middle to keep the defense honest, but that is the reverse of what we should be doing, given our personnel.

All that said, he called a pretty good game last Sat. Bloesch is not why we lost to Miami. (combination of things)
