There is one women's sport at Cal with an endowed HC position, and that's Field Hockey. If you want to be honest (you don't have to, it's your post) at least say this is with your heart.
Also, the elimination of Field Hockey doesn't open up any facilities for another sport, nor for campus housing....the very specific field is on top of Underhill...
Also a big sport in the ACC...
https://instagr.am/p/C_MfZlcPoE2
mb, unfortunately the financial reality is that there are also the salaries of 2 assistant coaches plus the travel costs to the east coast since the majority of the women's field hockey opponents are on the east coast (agreed it's a big sport in the acc with the affluent prep schools in the region that play the sport)

like rugby, women's field hockey needs to be reclassified as a club sport & play west coast schools within driving distances

the financial tsunami heading towards berkeley is gonna require some tough cost savings measure, that's just the reality of the situation

fyi, my daughter shay played field hockey at notre dame high school in north scottsdale, not a hater of the sport but let's be real here, the overwhelming majority of the young ladies playing this prep school sport are white & from very affluent wealthy enclaves (they don't need the schollys to attend berkeley, their families just want their daughters be tagged for special admissions acceptance)

Total bs response, not factual(oh the "Monster" knows what schools have it in the east?!!), and I will avoid the confrontation with the fake liberalism. Do better.

The night before the Big Game and after a midnight walk around the GameDay site, I got a top dog and talked with him for 30 minutes about cult movies. Cool dude.

Then spent the night at the Graduate hotel in a room with a view of the Campanile (painting below in lobby)

Okay brah....you avoid the heavy international influence to the Cal Field Hockey team, but you are good with it in all the sports that Cal is good at? Hint: Your girl Lulu ain't from the East Bay...........brah.
Again, I HAVE SEEN field hockey being played at non-private, very middle of the road High Schools, so spare me the name dropping (from a "volunteer" coach...waaay beneath your attempts at dropping wealthy names, oh but he is an Ivy so that makes him cool ....brah.)
I like that the Field Hockey coach is an endowed position, period. The team travel isn't significantly worse than any other Cal ACC program, and, considering that the sport is played heavily in the conference, it's not hard to make a trip and get two games out of it...it's probably the only sport that gained a definite advantage (from a travel perspective) moving to the ACC.
I don't know a single fact about the finances of the other Cal sports, so any sport "I want cut" is talking out of my ass (some of us try to avoid that, but like yourself, I fail now and then). And I don't honestly know that Field Hockey is going to survive either-because you need educating, ("move it to a club sport") only two schools west of the Mississippi play it-Furd and Davis.

mb, why is it that the only 2 other schools west of the mississippi that play women's field hockey are both academically elite & can recruit white high gpa east coast/international prep school players from affluent families??

plz also respond to what sport team needs to be cut if field hockey is retained in order to get to 16 sport teams in berkeley??

and do u think the financially upside down cal athletic department should borrow tens millions of dollars more in order to start a coed quidditch team that competes in the transvylania european coastal league (travel costs shouldn't be too bad if the team forgoes shocky's favorite hotel in the world the george v in paris & instead stays in a sofitel or something)??

What part of "I didn't want to talk out of my ass" didn't you understand? I am all about the savings of money, which, with the only endowed coach in women's athletics , is a pretty good place to start; also how I started my original point. Did you take reading comprehension off today, or a ponytail has you distracted? You don't know if 16 is the right number, and you sure as hell don't know how endowment in the various sports is doing.
By the way: some of the Field Hockey boosters are looking to endow more scholarships, because they were under the allowed amount...
Please continue with the fake liberal indignation...but please be careful, it won't play well at your elitist golf clubs. Bruh: they play Field Hockey in the ACC, and at some pretty mainstream schools....
Lastly, I don't care if Field Hockey survives honestly. The Department of Education is possibly getting dissolved today...we don't even know what the Title IX number needs to be....
Ps: not a big fan of women's collegiate soccer because each year the number of women going straight to clubs/pros is increasing. Fairly true on the male side as well. (Note the word FAN...has nothing to do with the economics of the sports). I also believe that MLB should be supporting college baseball; NCAA should threaten to not support baseball and they would come running with dollars...

real facts: golf at $18,000,000+ (not including the tpc stonebrae $23,000,000+ practice facility/clubhouse which will be paid over 4 installments) got more money than football; baseball has almost used up all of its stu gordon fundraised "save baseball" money & rugby is not even close to the bear insider myth that it's "self-funded"...lance cooper got more money lost in his sofa than most of the cal olympic sport teams including women's field hockey

Honestly, they shouldn't even be trying to figure women's sports/title IX until the Government has it figured out.

So putting that aside for a second: based on Lyons saying all men's sports have to be endowed, what male sports do you think are in trouble?

mb, the crushing unprecedented financial debt being incurred by the athletic department needs to be addressed NOW:

cal currently operates 13 men's sports, the following teams will be retained:

1) football
2) men's basketball
3) men's golf (the most endowed program in berkeley including football)
4) men's tennis
5) men's swimming & diving
6) men's water polo

the following 7 teams will be cut/reclassified as club sports (with zero athletic dept funding)

1) baseball (41 counters): the stu gordon fundraising money is nearly all gone, evans diamonds will be repurposed for the greater good of the university with an internal accounting "sale" to the central campus
2) men's cross country (18 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, edwards field will be repurposed
3) men's gymnastics (21 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, sport cut
4) men's rowing (71 counters): will become a club sport, can still compete for championships
5) men's rugby (62 counters): will become a club sport, can still compete for championships
6) men's soccer (41 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, will become a club sport playing local schools
7) men's track & field (65 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, edwards field will be repurposed

this will create a reduction of 319 counters which is the key metric for title ix compliance

cal currently operates 15 women's sports, the following teams will be retained:

1) women's basketball
2) softball
3) women's gymnastics
4) women's golf
5) women's tennis
6) women's swimming & diving
7) women's water polo
8) women's volleyball
9) women's beach volleyball

the following 6 sports will be cut/reclassified as club sports (with zero athletic dept funding):

1) women's cross country (14 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, edwards field will be repurposed
2) field hockey (26 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, will become a club sport
3) lacrosse (30 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, will become a club sport
4) women's track & field (51 counters): lack of donors/fan interest, edwards field will be repurposed
5) women's soccer (32 counters): lack of donors/fan interst, will become a club sport
6) women's rowing (60 counters): will become a club sport

this will create are a reduction of 233 counters which combined with the men's reduction of 319 counters will result in a total of 552 counters with all current scholly honored thru a berkeley degree/graduation

the athletic department will be operating 15 sport teams in compliance with the current ncca minimum of 15 sports programs...the expectation for all teams will be to graduate 95% of their student athletes & compete for championships

the repurposing of evans diamond & edwards field via an internal "sale" to the central campus will allow for an accounting debt relief of the current hundred million dollars of athletic department debt that will never have future revenue streams for repayment

at that point there will be a corresponding streamlining/rightsizing of the current bloated/mismanged athletic department with more than half of the current bureaucracy released with a vast savings of salaries, benefits & retirement costs to the university

when chancellor lyons wuz promoted one of his 1st actions wuz commissioning a study of the athletic department, consultants are gonna bill him a $1,000,000+++ to tell him wut this monster post summarizes for FREE but that's just how non financially accountable organizations work that can't even figure out marketing 101's 1st step in building the brand/building a pipeline to future Builders of Berkeley would be to offer FREE tixs to all students for all football & basketball games which is beyond ******* obvious

or rich can just not do **** & let the impending pending financial tsunami heading for berkeley wash away all sports & berkeley will become become an ivy league sports model institution with no schollys on a shoestring budget (which will please the majority of the academians at berkeley) with an empty memorial stadium sitting quietly on fall gamedays with the seagulls circling above from further afar as alums discontinue returning to their alma mater

econ, alky & pitts, my take is that chancellor lyons is coming around to the ephinany that there's no chance for financial survival of the cal athletics department with the unlikeable & unqualified current athletic director that can't even read a financial statement much less manage expenses or drive revenues

rich is hoping that lifelong hard working berkeley alums are gonna financially bail out the wasteful & bureaucratic athletic department, the upcoming BIG GIVE on march 13th is gonna see unprecedented low donations directed to the con artist's athletic department

donating to the cal athletic department is kinda like burning money, why not just send a personal check to cover knowlton's $1,300,000+ salary??

great leaders listen to their constituents, we're seeing the early 1st steps right now

today's great news re: ron riviera as the cal football general manager further underscores the irrelevance of general knowlton

The Cal FB program will have its own P&L, separate from the Cal Athletic Department. Rivera will be the defacto Athletic Director of Cal's largest revenue generating athletic entity. Donations to Cal FB, and revenues generated by Cal FB, will go to Cal FB. Not to the Athletic Department. And will be administered by Rivera, not JK. JK has been ('is being') completely neutered and circumvented - and otherwise rendered irrelevant and powerless - re ALL THINGS 'touching' Cal FB.

my nor cal favorite hidden gem is alistar mackenzie's dreamlike northwood on the russian river with the tallest trees on a golf course on planet earth & only 28 bucks to walk!!...runner ups: morro bay (42 bucks) & the golden gate park par 3 course (23 bucks for sf residents)

I view these as semi-hidden:

1. Corica Park South, Alameda. Redone by Rees Jones in the Australian Sandbelt style. I just played a tournament there a couple of weeks ago. After a decent drive on 1, with about 125 to the pin, I pulled eight-iron and hit a 20-foot high knockdown shot that bounced about 10 yards in front of the green, bounced on to the front and rolled to about 15 feet from the back right hole location. I turned to my playing partners and said, "That's how they play the shot in Australia." I doubt there's another public course in the Bay Area where you could play it that way, as most of the courses are perpetually over-watered.

2. Soule Park, Ojai. I haven't been back to play it since Hanse's renovation, but I played the original course in the late 80s-early 90s when I lived in Ventura County. It always had a great routing in a beautiful location, as the Ojai Valley is bounded by steep hillsides that are almost cliffs, and the course has Matiliija Creek running across it. My understanding is that it's even more strategic now, and still affordable to walk.

3. Boundary Oak, Walnut Creek. I add this at the risk of being laughed at, since Robert Muir Graves doesn't get much applause. But it's a fun course to play, with mostly dog-legged holes, and very tough greens, because the course goes up and down a slope that used to be a walnut orchard. The 14th hole is something I find very rare, a good three-shot par 5 for average players, where the strategy is dictated by the counterslop dogleg and a long, narrow, very sloped green.

I played Northwood a lot as a kid with my father, as we rented a cabin in Guerneville for several summers. The trees are lovely, but the last time I played the course, I thought the condition was so-so. MacKenzie, as I understand it, basically designed the course to serve campers at the Bohemian Grove, which is just across the Russian River.

corsica park: jeff, one hundo in agreement re: the south course (40 bucks to walk after 3:00 pm for the locals) with it's sand capped fairways during the renovation redesign it became the bay area's closest version (other than the very firm bouncy fairways at brambles & the cal club) to the wildly FUN & magnificent gems in melbourne's sand belt regions which reward creative ingenuity in the ground game as much as shotmaking skills

soule park: soule park (42 bucks to walk) in ojai is a terrific example of fantastic affordable public golf tho shocky prefers rustic canyon (39 bucks to walk after noon) in moorpark which is also a gil hanse design...rustic canyon's short par 4s with their thoughtful shot options are as strong as any course in california not named cypress point...only negative is the kinda weird walks across the bisecting sandy barranca on the back nine when traversing from a couple of greens to the next tee but that's not a dealbreaker at all

boundary oaks: your comment about the reverse camber 14th fairway (the olympic's lake is probably the best example of that design principle anywhere) makes me wanna check it out this fall perhaps on a cal football gameday...robert muir gets a bad rap among architecture buffs like me for imposing his hand/machinery upon the topography vs the preferred minimalist architects like bill coore & tom doak that softy set their routings upon the land with a light touch
