Cal's attendance...
my bad, though not sure I believe that's a correlation, playing with Niners and that helps Cal?.....I want him to play anywhere that he gets significant playing time, does well, and people hear that he went to Cal...
niners have an opening next to Warner, nobody really a surefire replacement. So, playing time is available, and playing next to Warner certainly makes things easier. But my point is similar to what you said in "he gets significant playing time, does well, and people hear that he went to Cal..." with the added bonus of all of his NFL fans are in the same geographical area as his college team and might think "oh, there's some talent there, I might as well stop by Berkeley on Saturday too"
Okay, well, I don't want him doing well for the Niners, and I don't see it as a huge miss for Cal if he is great somewhere else.
Just to add: in Matt Miller's round by round projection at ESPN.com., has him coming here to Philadelphia in the 5th round! Great opportunity, he would have a chance to add depth, and of course, see the ring ceremony and banner raising of the current NFL Champion Birds!!!

2025 houston open at memorial park: 2nd round update

michael kim (65, tied for 18th): mk is playing like a boss man with a near flawless round other a snap hooked 3 wood off the tee on the par 4 6th hole into the trees for a bogey & and a 3 jack from 50 feet on the par 5 3rd hole for a par...en fuego 65 wuz fueled by hitting 10 out of 13 fairways & making 88 feet of putts!

masters invitations will be overnighted at the close of play sunday evening to the top 50 players in the world rankings, this is how it looked heading into this tournament:

and the 6 bears also collectively played the par 3s in only 3 over par which is a significant improvement over yesterday

2025 houston open at memorial park: 3rd round update

michael kim (68, tied for 29th): mk kinda lost his focus down the stretch with a dumb azz bogey 6 on the scoreable par 5 16th hole & then a fat greenside bunker shot on the drivable par 4 17th hole which resulted in an unsavory par

what does michael need to do tomorrow to earn a 2025 masters invitation??

first of all 3rd round leader #55 min woo lee is realistically gonna jump mk

assuming kim (7 under par) ties or finishes ahead of #53 ben griffin (5 under par) & north scottsdale resident jake knapp (currently #85 in the world rankings, currently 10th in the tourny) does not win the tournament, michael gotta earn 2.83730 world rankings points tomorrow to jump austin eckroat, tom hoge & matthieu pavon

#49 matthieu pavon: 107.03137 points
#50 tom hoge: 105.8411 points
#51 austin eckroat: 105.43020 points
#52 michael kim: 104.19408 points

a solo 25th finish in the houston open earns 2.88620 world rankings points & probably an invitation to the 2025 masters

What would be cool is if our whole staff trained and prepped for games like our handful of stars do every year for Pro Day. We always seem to have a few guys who were decent but not standouts, but then rock it in pro day, and/or the combine, and ultimately the NFL. Hopefully with the new trainer, we'll get closer to that, with everyone. It'd also make it easer for our top talent to prep for that Pro Day when it arrives.

b&g, 100% agreed, r u thinking of guys like jake tonges (considered "too slow") & jake curhan (considered "non athletic), who else would be on that list??

what is the explanation for this phenomenon??

in speaking with dozens of bearents it's because guys declaring for the nfl draft shift their s&c workouts away from the cal football program to their new agent's s&c trainers for a couple of months with significant gains in key nfl evaluation metrics

yeah the past failed s&c program has been the #1 issue limiting the upward trajectory of the cal football program for years yet there's been no articles or anything from the insiders because they either didn't understand the core roots of the INJURY issues or didn't wanna criticize a courageous cancer survivor who is a man of color...but consider the source, shocky will always tell u thy unvarnished truth without any social/political filtering

how bad wuz brian johnson??

shocky reached out to him via email offering to set up a zoom call with jaylen brown to discuss the benefits of adding yoga movement to the cal football s&c program to mitigate injuries, johnson never responded (in fairness he might've been undergoing chemo therapy) but there wuz no reason for him to not involve his #2 with that offer

editorial notes: shocky is no longer gonna post on any other thread other than this one...greg richardson suspended the monster's privileges for 24 hours this weekend because of the "blog" nature of the this thread violating the bearinsider.com rules & regulations

honestly that feels kinda disingenuous with moving goal posts, his stated reasons for cancelling/censoring cal's monster class and cal's monster class deux back in the day never mentioned that as an issue

if shocky evah decides to return to the cal men's basketball program as the director of energy, recruiting & attendance bringing along jaylen brown as the face of the program he will start a new thread cal's monster class trois but will not post (or realistically even bother to read) anymore on the basketball board...but that's never gonna happen until schulzie & richardson bury the almost decade long dumb azz fued

anyways if more readers will post on this intentionally eclectic thread this will not be an issue, this is intended as an inclusive thread for everyone celebrating the #1 ranked PUBLIC university in the world!!

2026 high school recruiting summary:

the staff is targeting a high school class of approximately 15 signees, actionable offers will be at a PREMIUM

right now there are 3 verbal commitments (all on the defensive side of the ball subject to gpa academic excellence)

there are 4 recruiting weekends scheduled for this spring & summer: april 3rd, may 29th, june 5th & june 12th

^ there are around 20 scheduled official visits for these 4 official visit weekends, the vast majority of these prospects got actionable offers

there will be continued player evaluations & the building of relationships which will result in some current conditional offers being upgraded to actionable offers & additional scheduled official visits to berkeley

prospects not interested in life after football & working hard in the classrooms of berkeley in building generational wealth are not a good fit & should probably just sign with a football factory for disposable gladiators which will then set them up for working on the loading dock at restoration hardware when they're 30 years old & everybody around them is tired as **** about their dumb azz stories of being a football star back in the day

2026 high school recruiting update:

this weekend will kick off the 1st of probably 4 major recruiting weekends with KEY prospects visiting berkeley on official visits (as opposed to information gathering unofficial visits)

artem korchagin is a 4.1 gpa well constructed 6'5" 310 lbs mauler with a non stop workout motor to get better in all facets of his life...artem is relatively new to football, his best days are 100% in front of him

does korchagin wanna adventure in cali?...it all starts this weekend at the claremont resort looking out the window at palm trees & UNLIMITED future for building generational wealth both on the field with coach anae & in the classrooms of berkeley

I am in no way trying to justify what's been going on in our S&C the past few years, but the training for combine / pro day is very specific and sometimes the young men start thinking, "this is my last shot" and get super-motivated.

2025 spring ball: practice #8

the biggest defensivet surprise arguably of the spring has been the emergence of washington transfer 6'5" 205 lbs tristan dunn (#22 in the above video) who is earning reps with the 1s at safety with his elite length & ability to coverage ground in the passing game while maintaining a physical presence (which is a point of emphasis with the staff) in the run game

Wayne Stewart was a 6' 7" all-Pac-8 tight end for Cal in the late 60's. He was also a defensive back, if I remember, in his soph year. He played for the Jets and Chargers in the NFL.

Yes. Since you asked; 6-7" Wayne Stewart in 1966. In the season opening game at WSU he had 3 interceptions including a 66 yard Pick Six. He started all year. A year later he was moved to WR ("Split End"), where he had a two years as a starter and was All Pac 8. He also spent a year on the men's basketball team. He went on to 4 years in the NFL (mainly with Joe Namath and the NY Jets) as a tight end. Good guy, great Golden Bear who recently passed away.

So Tony Gonzalez was not Cal's first football/basketball two sport star to play in the NFL.

EDIT: Sorry I missed seeing SantaCruzBear's post on my phone. My mistake, but I recall Wayne only playing WR on offense (not Tight End) at Cal. He was pretty thin. I was surprised to see him later as a tight end as he obviously bulked up.

I'm going through catching up on many weeks of this thread and what has generated the strongest reaction in me thus far is considering the possibility that Tommy Tofi might decide to come to Cal. I know this is probably a long shot but, man, I really want this guy at Cal. Tommy Tofi could be a program altering commitment, if it were to happen.

It will be very interesting to watch his older brother John and see how he does at Cal. John is a very interesting prospect....he's probably 115 lbs lighter than younger brother Tommy, so a different kind of athlete entirely.

Part of me risks selling John short by wondering how much of his recruitment might be an effort to make Cal more attractive for his brother (the Zach Maynard/Keenan Allen effect). But another part of me suspects that John may just blossom at Cal. He's an excellent basketball player from an exceptionally athletic family....my gut says don't sell this guy short. I will be so happy if John turns out to be a stud off the edge and eventually starts getting to the quarterback for the Bears. Let's hope Berkeley becomes home for the Tofi family for years to come!

I gotta call "Booth!"

The taller a player is, the less likely he is to have the "short area quickness" that DBs need, especially corners. Harder to get those long legs going and changing direction when they need to react in space.

But if Dunn's got what it takes, that's great!

zony, the bears recruitment of tommy tofi is 100% legit & gaining momentum!!

at the recent tofi boyz attended practice #7 brother 2028 ernie tofi (who is considered the best athlete in the fam) wuz offered by the staff

and ur rite john tofi got an ELITE upside as until very recently he focused on hoops but that violent explosive +1 athleticism that he displays near the bucket portends a bright future in berkeley as a developing apex predator edge defender

tommy has been clearly told so there's nothing lost in translation that he's the #1 priority on cal's BIG BOARD!!...tommy is working to shed 10 lbs from his current 6'7" 335 lbs & will be taking his 6 national official visits this summer including berkeley on may 30th before making a final decision in mid july & graduating in december in order to enroll in college in january of 2026

all the tofi boyz have noted the growing poly vibe within memorial stadium which does not require costly/time consuming plane tickets/weather delayed layovers, overpriced hotel rooms with lumpy beds, rental car waiting lines that r outta suvs & sorry azz dog food restaurants for the fam on game weekends!!
