callixte alzas update: the WORLD class 2026 cal commit from france (saint cloud, west of paris) wuz a quarterfinalist in the 2025 british amateur & is currently competing at (one of the 4 final stage qualifying sites) royal cinque ports along the coast in southeast england for a spot in the 2025 british open to be held in july at royal portrush in northern ireland

callixte est magnifique!!

shocky would luv to tee it up with callixte at my beloved golf de morfontaine which is without doubt the best golf course in continental europe with a parisian romantic vibe (no pro shop, no caddies, no golf carts, everybody walks with their bag over their shoulder or with a push trolley, doggy dogs are welcome with water dishes on the course) & a world top 25 golf course

MAJOR announcement by the cal ticketing office, the bench student season tickets are now being sold for football & men's basketball games for an annual cost of $125
https://calbears.com/sports/2023/8/10/the-bench-student-section.aspx

this is an abject FAILURE decision by markeisha everrett & presumably with ron rivera's approval (if he truly has the keys to anything) that's gonna limit the magic of cal football to those from affluent pebble beach families on 17 mile drive while ******* over the poor azz kids from seaside

berkeley has a record setting number of 1st in family college students with crushing/staggering student loan debt that are from very low socioeconomic backgrounds that worked their azzs off to achieve 4.5+ gpas & earn admission/schollys to the #1 ranked public university in the world...many of them also worked part time jobs in high school & did not go to high school football games (just like 99%+ of all incoming international students have never attended an american football game) like the rich kids at legoland & stinson beach high schools

poor as **** kids who grew up on the 2nd floor over a laundry in san francisco like my berkeley grad moms back in the day will NEVER be able to afford going to cal football games & honestly this is gonna cost the program thousands of potential future fans/donors that will NOT be imprinted with cal football during their collegiate days

and then when many of these currently poor as **** students build generational wealth in a vast variety of ways including venture capital start ups then the university will ask them to donate and these solicitations are gonna be ignored/deleted

not offering FREE tixs to all berkeley students for all gamedays is not only out of character for a PUBLIC university but also 99% locks in the cal men's basketball program which is in an alligator roll death spiral since the termination of cal's monster class to another 16th (only ahead of stanford) attendance ranking among acc teams

yeah ron & the players are gonna look up at the stands at the september 6th texas southern game & see 40,000+ empty/unoccupied seats along with blue tarps everywhere & wonder why there's NO ENERGY in the stadium

2025 british open final qualifying (36 holes):

congrats to last year's berkeley grad sampson zheng shooting a 68 & 69 today and finishing 2nd at west lancashire in liverpool to earn an invitation to next month's british open along with collin morikawa & byeong ben an

also strong playing (but perhaps disappointing to him) by callixte alzas shooting a 74 & 77 at royal cinque ports in trying to qualify for his 1st major championship as one of the youngest competitors...callixte, this is only the debut of your many future major championships on the biggest stages in golf amie!!

michael kim will need a top 5 to 10 performance at the john deere this week to qualify as a top 50 ranked player in the world (currently ranked #55 in the official rankings)...max homa (paired with rickie fowler for the first 2 rounds) needs a victory to get invited to royal portrush on the blustery north irish seas

cal athletics sports endowments update:

aqua man ned (far right in the floor seats with the dark blue sweater drapped around his neck, good guy but often annoyed shocky wuz blocking his views back in the day) & carol (more cheerful than her husband, a real fashionista particularly with her sparkly shoes) spieker are donating $26,000,000 to endow the men's polo water and men's swimming/diving teams

there are now 5 programs endowed: men's & women's golf, rugby, men's water polo and men's swimming/diving

the next programs likely to fundraise endowments are the rowing & tennis programs

chancellor lyons has set a target date of june 2027 for all men's non revenue sports to become endowed, there's minimal financial support (with almost no fanbases) for baseball, men's soccer, men's gymnastics and the men's track & field/cross country programs which will hopefully result in the crushing/staggering debt driven athletic department rightsizing with these sports cut and both evans field & edwards stadium repurposed for the greater good of the university

Let me try to provide some context. If there is one take away from the failure that was the Christ/Knowlton regime it was their failure to understand that if the football team doesn't succeed in providing Cal access to a power conference in the future, a lot of the "Olympic" teams won't be able to achieve elite success regardless of what happens with the endowment of these specific Olympic teams. While I salute those folks endowing these Olympic sports, I just hope they appreciate the ceiling to the benefit of their generosity without a successful football program. That is why this supporter of the golf team has moved his support to funding the football program.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
alex, you bring up a very interesting point re: the olympic sports fundraising cannibalizing the football & men's basketball programs

the christ/knowlton regime (which has thankfully ended, hopefully the evil as **** jennifer simon-o'neil & lazy azz non innovative markeisha everrett are next to be shown the door) has seen the prioritization of a new women's softball stadium & a new women's sand volleyball facility along with a new tennis complex instead of fully funding the football program or building the critically needed basketball practice facility

and now chancellor lyons is directing the athletic department staff to fundraise for sports that really nobody gives 2 ***** about instead of football & basketball like virtually every other d1 university in the united states

silver medalist discus thrower mykolas alekana is transferring to oregon, both of cal's mens & women's track/cross county programs need to be shuttered NOW not in june of 2027

ur 100% on the money, if football is relegated to the bay coast football conference with annual rivalry games with cal poly the entire athletic department is gonna be financially unsustainable (except for the 5 programs that are already endowed) & memorial stadium will be converted to a city of berkeley homeless shelter aka people's park

but the football program is also contributing to its downfall by losing 3-4 games last season because wilcox opted to listen to his buddy longwell instead of shocky re: mateen bhaghani (the collin morikawa of placekicking with his ice in his veins laser accuracy, my efforts to work out a scholly deal with the football staff at mateen's parents request wuz unsuccessful) & this week's decision to not offer FREE tixs to all berkeley students which is beyond ******* stupid from a marketing/branding standpoint & imprinting potential future season tixs buyers/donors to the university with the magic of cal football
sycasey

Sebastabear seems pretty optimistic that Cal is also going to reach its funding goals for football, so couldn't the endowment of these other sports be seen as away to get them "off the books" and self-sustaining so that the school can better focus on the sports that really need the help and the ones that will maintain membership in a power conference (in other words, football and basketball)?
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
sycasey, kevin kennedy has worked his azz off to generate the necessary funding for the football program, hopefully this fall season will reap winning results from his tireless fundraising

my point is that baseball (almost all of the stu gordon fundraising has been expended), men's soccer, men's gymnastic and the men's track & field/cross country programs are NOT gonna be endowed (or anywhere near that) by rich's june 2027 deadline, we're just doing a going thru the motions bull**** bureaucratic process to "save" these sports

and when those programs are eventually/inevitably chopped it will be possible in compliance with title ix to cut the all white rich girls women's lacrosse & field hockey programs which are hopelessly losing games while expensively flying back & forth across the country to the east coast where these elite prep school sports are played by mostly private schools

Shocky is next up to fully endow the men's basketball program! The following will immediately take place…

*All men's basketball games will have dog rescue adoptions at half time.
*Instead of bear growl contest, it will be a curvy brunette yoga twister game
*During timeouts, Madsen will call Shocky over to draw up a "pitchout" play to run on the next inbound
*The first 3000 students that show up that have a 3.5+ GPA will get into the game free.
*Bucees double heart attack pulled pork sandos to be launched from the cannon
*Shocky goes head to head with a current cal golfer on a pre game putt from half court
*An in game contest called "name that truck stop" where Big 12 are called out

I'm definitely getting season tickets!!!

I wonder what other major FBS schools charge students for season tickets? I don't mean the huge programs that always sell out no matter what (Ohio State, Alabama, etc.), but rather those in a similar position to Cal. Do they give out free or super-cheap tickets to students?

I generally agree with the idea that you should give out free or extremely cheap tickets to help build a student fan base, just curious if anyone knows where Cal is on the spectrum.

comparing cal to other schools is not really relevant, a typical academically mediocre school grad is not gonna be as wealthy as the vast majority of berkeley grads in 10 years from now & in a position to donate to the university if they got school spirit (which is highly unlikely if they've never attended any gamedays, their relationship with berkeley will be strictly transactional not emotional)

I can't speak to how fundraising would change if the rules change. Presumably the Legends collective would need to re-form.

That said, even if the House settlement in its current form fails to hold, its very existence signals a general desire by even the powerful NCAA programs (not to mention Congress) to have some restrictions and guardrails vs. the current free-for-all, so I suspect SOME kind of framework will have to be created. What the contours of that are, I cannot say.

The NCAA and at least power conference schools have been signaling (no actually begging) for Congressional action for several years now. How has that been working? The rest of us are concerned that Cal doesn't appear to have a Plan B, when House blows-up. But the one thing I can assure you is that is if Cal can't remain in a Power conference, many of the Cal "Olympics" program are in trouble, regardless if being endowed. For example with men's swimming, the top swimmers will chose instead to go to power programs like Texas (SEC), Florida (SEC), Indiana (B1G), Michigan (B!G) , Georgia (SEC), Auburn (SEC) , Arizona (Big 12), etc. and I would also expect that Durden moves to a power conference program (for huge bucks) because everyone whether players or coaches, wants to compete against the best.

BTW, without a power conference football team and its attendant revenues, look for Cal to become overall to compete at a level like Oregon State in all sports, which means a huge drop off, except in certain unique sports (which is OSU's case is their elite baseball program). The economics are that bad.

Bill, I think you know this, but the San Diego State student tickets are only "free" in sense that there's not a separate charge for them, per se. As SCT has noted on several occasions, SDSU students pay a hefty student fee that goes to support athletics. If Cal imposed a similar fee, all students would pay it, which would increase the tuition/fee cost that much more. On the other hand, such a fee probably would be covered as part of the financial aid students might get. So the question is probably, if Cal did that, how long it would take to overcome the student anger at imposing that fee. I get that your idea is for the school to just eat the cost of the tickets, based on the fact that the stadium is not currently selling out, on the assumption that there will be an alumni ROI down the road. I don't necessarily disagree with that, but I'm not sure SDSU is a good example for comparison.

BTW, without a power conference football team and its attendant revenues, look for Cal to become overall to compete at a level like Oregon State in all sports, which means a huge drop off, except in certain unique sports (which is OSU's case is their elite baseball program). The economics are that bad.
I mean, what they got was the House settlement and if that blows up they will probably seek something else.

I don't disagree about Cal's need to remain in a power conference.
I'm saying this badly, but I'm not sensing any planning for when the House settlement explodes, which is disconcerting because you can read about what other schools are doing, so they are proactive and not continually reactive like Cal. I appreciate there is no real resource in-house to address policy given that Knowlton was an obvious light weight, and his two successors are even less qualified. Outside guys that have some expertise, like Sabasterbear, don't seem to always have the Chancellor's ear. My sense is that while the Chancellor wants to become more involved in sports on personal level, he has an awful lot on his plate already, and things in college sports are not waiting around for the Chancellor to find some spare time. Rivera seems like a quick study, and can influence the Chancellor, but is he willing to discuss the entire athletic department as opposed to focus just on football? Shocky can come off as over the top, but doesn't mean he is wrong about the lack of direction in Cal athletics in these critical times.
