Sebastabear seems pretty optimistic that Cal is also going to reach its funding goals for football, so couldn't the endowment of these other sports be seen as away to get them "off the books" and self-sustaining so that the school can better focus on the sports that really need the help and the ones that will maintain membership in a power conference (in other words, football and basketball)?
Sycasey, this scenario works until the House settlement falls apart because the concept of restricting private collective payments to athletes dies with an injunction leveled by a federal Judge likley sitting in an SEC state where an anti-trust case has no doubt been filed by said State's Attorney General. Everyone knows it is coming. And plan B is ????

I can't speak to how fundraising would change if the rules change. Presumably the Legends collective would need to re-form.

That said, even if the House settlement in its current form fails to hold, its very existence signals a general desire by even the powerful NCAA programs (not to mention Congress) to have some restrictions and guardrails vs. the current free-for-all, so I suspect SOME kind of framework will have to be created. What the contours of that are, I cannot say.
The NCAA and at least power conference schools have been signaling (no actually begging) for Congressional action for several years now. How has that been working? The rest of us are concerned that Cal doesn't appear to have a Plan B, when House blows-up. But the one thing I can assure you is that is if Cal can't remain in a Power conference, many of the Cal "Olympics" program are in trouble, regardless if being endowed. For example with men's swimming, the top swimmers will chose instead to go to power programs like Texas (SEC), Florida (SEC), Indiana (B1G), Michigan (B!G) , Georgia (SEC), Auburn (SEC) , Arizona (Big 12), etc. and I would also expect that Durden moves to a power conference program (for huge bucks) because everyone whether players or coaches, wants to compete against the best.

BTW, without a power conference football team and its attendant revenues, look for Cal to become overall to compete at a level like Oregon State in all sports, which means a huge drop off, except in certain unique sports (which is OSU's case is their elite baseball program). The economics are that bad.
I mean, what they got was the House settlement and if that blows up they will probably seek something else.

I don't disagree about Cal's need to remain in a power conference.
I'm saying this badly, but I'm not sensing any planning for when the House settlement explodes, which is disconcerting because you can read about what other schools are doing, so they are proactive and not continually reactive like Cal. I appreciate there is no real resource in-house to address policy given that Knowlton was an obvious light weight, and his two successors are even less qualified. Outside guys that have some expertise, like Sabasterbear, don't seem to always have the Chancellor's ear. My sense is that while the Chancellor wants to become more involved in sports on personal level, he has an awful lot on his plate already, and things in college sports are not waiting around for the Chancellor to find some spare time. Rivera seems like a quick study, and can influence the Chancellor, but is he willing to discuss the entire athletic department as opposed to focus just on football? Shocky can come off as over the top, but doesn't mean he is wrong about the lack of direction in Cal athletics in these critical times.

Sure, there needs to be some idea of what to do next if the guardrails are again removed (even if temporarily). That said, given that Lyons seems to be aligned with athletics needs, that Rivera is in place with real power, and that Sebasta and his cohort seem to have a lot more influence now, I am more optimistic about that being discussed now than I would have been before.

WIAF, you are spot on, there is no way the House settlement holds. The "true NIL only aspect" is a joke and will probably fail the first court challenge. We need to be planning for the what comes next.

I think with Knowlton gone we are at good point to look at spinning off management of the revenue sports to be managed by an alumni-run organization that would abide by the House settlement until it is replaced.

Lyons is the most receptive chancellor to athletics in the last 65 years. Calling him inept is way off target. These changes are likely short term as the landscape is changing.

Bowker, Heyman, Tien, Dirks and Christ define inept athletics management. And their "leadership" put Cal where it is. Lyons is putting humpy dumpy back together again. It's going to take time.

alky, 100% agreed that chancellor lyons is the most receptive berkeley chancellor to athletics since t-rexs roamed planet earth!!

oak, co leaders is not a terrible idea in organizational theory, what's terrible is that both the evil as **** jennifer simon-o'neil AND jay larson are absolutely worthless bureaucrats with anti football/basketball agendas...as the athletic department becomes increasingly irrelevant it will hopefully result in their terminations/"retirements" along with the fully unqualified markeisha everrett during the next 12 months

but make no mistake about it, the negotiated forced "retirement" (with lawyers representing both sides, losing football control to rivera wuz the tipping point for jimbo to take the settlement package back to colorado springs) of the con artist knowlton (and last year's retirement of cfo tom lowry who admitted to me on a conference call that he wuz tired of all the football financial "demands") wuz 100% the critical 1st step in restructuring the athletic department away from those who do NOT celebrate the magic of cal football & basketball

I agree regarding removing Larson and Simon-O'Neill. However while Lyons has shown a willingness to prop up football he does seem to favor keeping all the sports they currently offer. That almost certainly will hamstring the overall department. And could prove fatal.

Now that could just be a public statement to keep the peace for now but the TV money is not increasing anytime soon and it is unlikely the donors will continue to feed the department at a rate that allows for full revenue share for eternity. Especially if football continues to flounder.

The 2025-2026 athletic calendar has to be used to determine a viable path forward. The can has been kicked down the road for far too long. And football has to win. NOW. not 7 games. 8 or more. Preferrably more. And they need to make CMS a real home field advantage. Stop losing at home. They have to get fans in the seats. Free student tickets is fine, but Cal needs to find 10k more fans that are willing to pay to see this team play at CMS.

Free student tickets is a good idea to create longer term fans and potential donors/supporters. But they need to capture paying fans for this to work. That is where Markeisha needs to be booted. Find a strategy to get folks in the stadium. Winning will work but while building a winner they need fans to come now. And come back again. And again. And again.

Get creative and be bold.

Another way of looking at it is if Chancellor Lyons can achieve full endowment for 10-15 of Cal's 29 non-revenue athletics programs (he is currently at 5, I believe, in relatively short order), the Athletic Department would then be supporting only 14-19 non-revenue sports, which would be in line with a 'right-sized' Athletic Department.

6956, while we can agree that cal needs the revenues from another 10,000+ paying fans, they aren't just gonna magically materialize into strawberry canyon in the real world

a very high percentage of students that attend football/basketball games that remain in the bay area after graduation are likely to become season tix holders

and that's why growing the fanbase via FREE tixs for all berkeley students not only creates a louder hostile home field advantage at memorial stadium on gamedays now but it's also a critically needed INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE!!

pitts, there's zero chance that "10-15" of the current programs will be endowed & less than 1% chance that any meaningful fundraising will occur with baseball, men's soccer, men's gymnastics, both men's & women's track & field/cross country, women's lacrosse or the women's field hockey programs

yeah the anti revenue sports trio of jay larson, jennifer simon-o'neil & markeisha everrett are all MYOPIC (all graduated from garbage time skools for dumb azzs) worthless bureaucrats that got no value in the marketplace that will never leave berkeley unless compelled to do so like general knowlton & former cfo tom lowry...and there are forces working together to make sure this happens

2025 john deere classic (somewhere in the humid as **** midwest): 2nd round update

max homa (68, tied for 2nd): max continues to gain strokes on the field with his positive attitude, even after his perfectly driven 3 wood on the par 4 13th hole dropped into a dirty divot in the middle of the fairway which resulted him hitting his next shot 60 yards (half of the distance on the 122 yard 2nd shot) max wuz still joking about it with rickie (who is basically a low gpa version of shocky) & jake (who also got some brutal lies in divots too)...the keys to this weekend will include not engaging in heavy late nite drinking with colt & SMILING!!

james hahn (70, tied for 44th): congrats to the haas biz grad on making the cut!!...not well known fact: hahn got kicked off the cal golf team back in the day

michael kim (75, missed cut): the former john deere champion's driver took a vacation day missing 10 outta 14 fairways via a variety of pulls & snap hooks...that's golf sometimes, still a terrific season for michael!!

"A fully endowed men's sport" still requires that we fund an equivalent women's sport out of our football revenues to be compliant with Title IX. That is separate from the women's sports we already need to fund to offset football. And soon under the House settlement we are going to be funding NIL out of our football revenues. Bear in mind that the House settlement only applies to P4 schools and Cal has the absolute lowest revenues among P4 all the schools.

A men's sport should not be considered "fully endowed" unless an associated woman's sport is also fully endowed.

2025 john deere classic somewhere in the bum**** midwest: 3rd round update

max homa (68, tied for 2nd): the bro of valencia got the most insano golf break of his life when his sketch 2nd shot on the par 5 10th hole soared over the spectators, a giamnormous viewing mound and bounced across a community street into some random azz empty field that wuz somehow not marked as outta bounds into a decent lie!!...yeah playing golf is FUN, hopefully max & lacey's son cam is not gonna run up on shredder davis thompson (who would probably work at a mortuary if he didn't play on the pga tour) at the duck city bistro throwback or something

james hahn (72, tied for 58th): james missed 8 outta 14 of the not narrow fairways, gotta drive the ball into play for scoring opportunities manana

real talk: the rainstorms favor max in that they penalize slow/deliberate as **** guys (who get soaked/drenched) like mortuary man david thompson while it encourages homa to go thru his pre shot routine quickly/efficiently without a lot of mentally draining & unnecessary 37 alex noren practice swings before making an intuitive athletic swing like a junior golf rat champion at valencia muni

2025 john deere classic in the land of country music: 4th round update

max homa (69, tied for 5th): NEWSFLASH: max is playing golf with a SMILE & almost as much FUN as gabi!!...if homa drains the 2 10 footer birdie putts on the 17th & 18th hole he's right there at the top of the leaderboard...constructive takeaway: other than the putt on the 17th hole, max did not putt aggressively enuf particularly with the rain drenched greens to keep his speed up & hold his lines (leaving key putts short/missing on the low side), fully expect a simple correction next time cam's dad is in contention

homanation update: max will not be traveling to the scottish & british opens this year but will travel from scottsdale to the pga tour at the end of the month at the travelers in minneapolis (the land of 10,000 lakes & mosquitos)

james hahn (74, 63rd): yeah there's probably a correlation between james missing 23 fairways this week off the tee & also missing 23 greens in regulation

don't be a dumb azz: ^ michael is apparently very confused re: us open (top 60 in the official world golf rankings receive an invitation) & the british open (top 50 receive an invitation), kim is currently #56 in the owgr...needs to finish in the top 3 (a separate qualifying criteria) at the scottish open to secure an invitation, otherwise michael is gonna be watching the open on tv

collin morikawa caddie update:

veteran caddie billy foster will be on the bag the next 2 tournaments, foster brings significant links golf knowledge to the equation as a uk resident in yorkshire, this is not expected to be a longterm relationship for the 59 year old who doesn't wanna relocate again to the united states... kk limbaust (currently ranked #162 on the korn ferry got 10 tournaments left in the 2025 schedule to play better & retain his korn ferry card for 2026, if not he's gonna have a major decision to make to either then caddie for collin & make millions over time with his best friend on golf's largest stages or play on the asian tour in front of 500+ fans) is in the korn field tour field this week at tpc colorado & will not be caddying for his former teammate at the scottish & british opens this month

cal's monster class EXCLUSIVE: meet the worthless bureaucratic ****tards

listening to these 2 unlikeable anti football/basketball agenda dumb azzs with degrees from mediocre skools talk about espn gameday being a highlight of their careers is just straight up lying & tryna rebrand themselves as advocates for football now that the con artist isn't there to protect them anymore

jay larson

*****the architect behind misappropriating money from football & men's excellence in basketball donations to other agendas without notifying donors

*****the catalyst for the zoom call self reporting violation which resulted in multiple football staffers being suspended

*****recently tried to significantly reduce the daily food stipends for football players which would have basically wiped out the nutrition program & effectively terminated the football program...larsons wuz overriden by lyons & rivera and this wuz the final straw that resulted in the chancellor fully turning the keys over to the fb gm

*****the co lobbyist for nil dollars to be split 50/50 between men's & women's sports in order to be in "compliance" with title ix despite the fact that there is no other collegiate institution that shares that interpretation

*****abysmal leadership of FAILING men's athletic programs including basketball, baseball, soccer & cross country/track & field

jennifer simon o'neil

*****enabled for years teri mckeever to engage is racist & abusive behavior that resulted in multiple women's swimmers having suicidal iterations...let's be very clear about this, jennifer simon-o'neil is evil as **** and the unfunded student athlete lawsuits has the potential to be a financial tsunami

*****the co lobbyist for nil dollars to be split 50/50 between men's & women's sports in order to be in "compliance" with title ix despite the fact that there is no other collegiate institution that shares that interpretation

*****demanded that the women's basketball budget be the same as the men's basketball program, again a practice not replicated anywhere else on planet earth

*****abysmal leadership of women's athletic programs:

women's basketball: failed to measurably increase attendance despite this past season's generational squad, facilitated the hiring of a head coach who is an introvert that cannot raise nil funds & the hiring of an unqualified marketing director in markeisha everrett

women's softball: hired a mentally unstable head coach, last year's entire starting line up including the pitching staff is now out of eligibility or in the transfer portal as a result of the the crazy town bus crashing in strawberry canyon

women's soccer: like swimming former berkeley student athletes filing complaints re: coaching staff abuse/bullying
https://www.ktvu.com/news/more-athletes-describe-years-of-mistreatment-by-cal-soccer-coach

women's gymnastics: head coaches left to clemson & roster retention under attack, program in upheaval

women's volleyball: 15-17 record last season & 7-13 in acc play

women's field hockey: 7-10 record last season & 1-6 in acc play

women's lacrosse: 6-10 record last season & 0-9 in acc play

women's track & field: tied for 12th place in the acc indoor championship last season

women's cross country: 15th place in the acc tournament last season

women's sand volleyball: there's no critically needed dedicated basketball practice facility in berkeley but o'neil is spearheading a new sand volleyball facility built for the maybe 100+ fans

in a performance based organization that held its highest ranking employees accountable with specific metrics both larson & simon-o'neil would already be fired for absolute FAILING PERFORMANCES

the good news is that both will be redundantly unnecessary in 12 months from now if a basketball general manager is hired along the same lines of responsibility as ron rivera for football

getting rid of jim knowlton (which involved a negotiated "retirement" severance that involved attorneys on both sides) & cfo tom lowry (who once tole me on a zoom call that he wuz tired of the football program's financial "demands," his replacement is the very capable berkeley grad sierra achin-cryns) is clearing a path to terminate both jay & jenny

cal's monster offensive line recruiting update:

2026 4.1 gpa 6'5" 310 lbs interior trench worker artem korchagin from thomas county central high school in georgia (close to the florida border & tallahassee) and a teammate of unreal 5 start talent camron brooks is gonna take an official visit to berkeley on june 13-15th

don't judge fast rising artem by his offers, he's been playing football for only 2 years & the relentless worker's upside is limitless plus he's smart as ****

artem, r u ready to check out the cosmopolitan west coast (san francisco got the most european vibes of any city in the united states) with ideal cali weather (aren't u kinda tired of the nasty humid hot as **** southern weather??) & learn more about building generational wealth thru nfl development with meeks in the acc & hard work in the classrooms of berkeley??

oak, lyons pushed out knowlton (who had already lost his financial ally lowry) & for the 1st time in their sorry azz careers both larson and o'neil will be in a position as co athletic directors that will involve them being held ACCOUNTABLE during the next 12 months which wuz never the case with the con artist and the former chancellor who thought berkeley shouldn't be involved in big time athletics

rich is creating a pathway using the above documented facts to tell both the ****tards in 12 months from now that based upon performance ur employment is no longer necessary at the #1 ranked public university in the world

jay & jenny don't got no nowhere to hide anymore as they carry out their anti football/basketball agendas

the purpose of college athletics in the year 2025 is creating school spirit (which facilitates alums returning to campus on gamedays) which is critical to building a fan/donor base that will financially support universities at a time of significantly reduced state & federal funding so they can continue to fulfill their academic missions at a world class high level

it's not about preferred varsity blues admissions for rich white girls playing women's lacrosse & field hockey or middle class white boys playing baseball (and yeah shocky played varsity baseball at stinson beach high school back in the day) that nobody gives 2 ***** about

in these existential times with the financial tsunami heading towards berkeley either a sports program fundraises an endowment or it gets washed away into the cold abyss

yeah rich is NOT inept but that don't mean that shocky still isn't hoping that lyons & rivera wake the **** up tomorrow morning & eliminate (refunding any dollars already collected) the discriminatory (favors kids with affluent parents & no student debt) $125 student bench pass & offer FREE football & basketball gameday tixs to ALL berkeley students!!

dwm, agreed that max is now playing with a FUN mindset & synched up swing freedom with less technical thoughts, playing more like a junior golf rat champion at valencia municipal with budget golf balls than an entitled whiny azz complainer making millions on the pga tour

homa didn't putt with enough speed on sunday which resulted in putts being short and/or missing on the low side, he also missed 9 outta 14 fairways off the tee but the misses wuz small particularly the drive a foot into the rough on the scoreable par 5 17th hole which resulted in a lay up instead of a 2nd shot onto the green for an eagle look

fun fact: max has gained a couple of miles of ballspeed with his cored out body (can't rep lululemon looking like jay & jenny, so glad homa non renewed the ugly azz master card logo endorsement on his shirt collar, always looked like he got mustard & ketchup on his clothing after a messy top dog or something) & is hitting the ball further than ever

max is gonna win again on the pga tour!!
