vats is one of shocky's favorite players in the program with his academic ambition & humble personality but #71 took a lotta plays off last season...at the pittsburgh game at acrisure stadium there wuz a 1st half 3 & out series when vatikani didn't appear to make any contact with a panther defender on 3 consecutive stuffed running plays, that's not gonna get u PAID in the national football league

sioape has not developed at a strong clip during his time in berkeley due to poor o-line coaching & being outta shape with a low motor but has cored out his body this off season & hopefully will reach his legit nfl upside with coach anae

the following are player's actual and shocky's TARGETED 315+ minimum weights for each offensive line room member after 2025 spring camp:

jordan spasojevic-moko, 6'5" 335 lbs (BEST o-line newcomer, needs to become more quick twitch +1 athletic!!)
sioape vatikani, 6'4" 315 lbs (vats took a lotta plays off last season, new cored out body is lean!!)
nick morrow, 6'8" 315 lbs (missed spring ball, at 6'8" needs to get to 330 lbs)
frederick williams, 6'5" 300 lbs (banged up at the end of spring ball, needs to get to 315 lbs)
braden miller, 6'6" 315 lbs (biggest surprise of spring running with 1s, needs to get to 320 lbs)
bastian swinney, 6'6" 305 lbs (got pushed backwards last season, needs to get to 320 lbs)
tyson ruffins, 6'2" 310 lbs (ran with the 1s this spring but got pushed backwards, need to get to 320 lbs)
daveion harley, 6'1" 300 lbs (just signed, needs to get to 315 lbs)
lajuan owens, 6'4" 355 lbs (physical mauler, needs to core out to 335 lbs)
leon bell, 6'8" 315 lbs (got starting talent upside, at 6'8" needs to get to 330 lbs)
lamar robinson, 6'3" 300 lbs (missed spring ball, needs to get to 315 lbs)
akili calhoun, 6'4" 300 lbs (ran with the 2s, needs to get to 315 lbs)
syris corley, 6'4" 330 lbs (needs to core out to 315 lbs)
tyler knape, 6'4" 290 lbs (needs to get to 315 lbs)
aiden newbill, 6'8" 290 lbs (at 6'8" needs to get to 330 lbs)
justin hasenhuetl, 6'5" 270 lbs (schulzie's favorite german needs to get to 315 lbs)

big c, appreciate ur passion re: the offensive line too, shocky's take is that the o-line is gonna be the most CRITICAL factor in the 2025 california golden bears season & this summer's s&c development of adding healthy weight will determine their ability to control (or not) the line of scrimmage this fall

the fall camp roster with updated weights will be released in the very near future & it's gonna give us revealing insights re: whose gonna have the 315+ bodies to start, compete as part of the playing rotation and potentially win post season awards (and whose undersized azz is gonna be on the bench this fall)

let's circle back on ur trench workers award predictions after the weights #s are released, r u optimistic that coach novak is gonna get these bodies right after all that happened in lansing??

schulzie is asking that every player & football staff member including coach wilcox reach out to chris today & encourage him in the most positive/loving way imaginable to FINISH HIS DEGREE!!

I forget... what happened in Lansing? E. Lansing, Novak's last stop, right?

I'm optimistic for two reasons:

1. Easy act to follow for Novak
2. I'm always optimistic in July, when we're UNDEFEATED!!!

How long do you want to ignore this user?
^ big c, it's real simple, coach novak & coach anae either get our o-line cooked up with 315+ lbs maulers (the bears o-lines have been undersized for years because the head coach didn't have the balls to fire a FAILING s&c coach that wuz a courageous cancer survivor) that can impose their will at the line of scrimmage (without needing trick plays on 3rd and 2, 4th and 1) during clock running long sustainable drives thereby keeping the talented but inexperienced d off the field during the 2025 season or it's gonna be another wilcox mediocre ****show with time running out due to conference realignments on the horizon

yeah the upcoming fall camp release of the updated o-line weights is gonna be really ******* important if u believe in the magic of cal football!!

3. keep this water cooked 400 degrees fahrenheit
4. can't even be in public with a michigan state hoodie on
5. zero toleration
6. any further questions u can take that up with the lawyer

braden miller also made it outta lansing after all that happened (low gpa school with level 7 hypothermia for dumb azzs)#

whose ur caddy??

watching them low key interact without a lotta conversation up close last sunday in tahoe max 100% got the right caddie for him right now in lance bennett who is kinda like a quiet stoic bag man for our california golden bear superhero without a lot of unnecessary ******* drama (homa needs to own his shots/decisions just like he did back in the back as a fearless champion junior golfer playing discount golf balls at valencia muni)!!

https://instagr.am/p/CkT9ar2SE1e
collin is waiting to see wut his best friend kk limbhaust wants to do long term (shocky honestly thinks that kk lacks the clubhead speed to compete on the pga tour, he's currently 137th in driving distance on the korn ferry tour)...limbhaust didn't get into the this week's korn ferry tournament after the rankings reshuffle & is currently the 4th alternative for next week's utah championship...kk is currently #169 in the korn ferry rankings with only the top 156 advancing into the 1st round of the playoffs in mid august & his 2026 korn ferry tour card in jeopardy

if morikawa needs a placeholder caddy in memphis either his wife kat (who played golf at nobu malibu pepperdine) or shocky is available to loop for FREE!!

yeah relationships are kinda complex & sometimes timing/responsibilities/dreams affect those relationships...stay tuned baby, life is NOT linear (and nobody can 100% predict the future)

2025 minnesota open (the land of 10,000 lakes & white people with really bad tans): 3rd round update

max homa (69, tied for 30th): despite homa's decision earlier this week to replace all his equipment (including his water ball retriever) at golf galaxy, max shot his 3rd round in the 60s despite rinsing his balls in the water (apparently the shower pressure at his hotel no es bueno) on the 9th & 18th holes

most importantly max is driving the ball accurately (72%) & is 6th in the field in greens in regulation (86%)...the key to tomorrow's final round are a little extra time working out his green reads & scoring on holes one thru five (homa is +1 on this stretch during the 1st 3 rounds)

max gotta low 60s score in him manana, let's ******* go!!

2023 golf magazine world top 100 list:

as someone who has played all the world top 100 lists since 1997, very interested in receiving today an advance release of the 2023 rankings (ranked every 2 years) which will be publicly released in december
https://top100golf.blogspot.com/2006/01/people-who-have-played-top-100-golf.html

fun fact: my former caddie home course san francisco golf club is #38, the cal club is #45 while the olympic lake (#96 in the 2021 rankings) drops out of the world top 100, the just completed gil hanse renovation will hopefully add some fun & more strategic options to the design along with eliminating the weird walk to the 8th tee box from the 7th green...also looking forward to playing coore & crenshaw's brambles when it formally opens in 2024, yeah it's just up the hill from my future t-rex yoga studio in yountville

there are 8 new additions to the 2023 rankings:

#68 the lido (not played)...tom doak's replica based upon historical documents in wisconsin of the charles blair mcdonald no longer in existence masterpiece on long island...slim wadie & shocky will be visiting the sand valley resort next june

#76 point hardy (not played)...coore & crensahw design on the clifftops in st lucia

#85 te arai south (not played)...coore & crenshaw design in the sand dunes north of auckland...slim wadie (who has never been to nz) & shocky gotta a february g2c2 (global golf centurion club) new zealand trip which will also include tara iti (ranked#20), tom doak's te arai (north) course & another trip to my favorite resort in the world cape kidnappers

#88 lofoten links (played)...in northern norway (home of the spectacular northern lights in the winter) shocky played a round in the morning, went with my kids to the beach all afternoon, took an evening sofa king nap & then played a round teeing off at the stroke of midnight

#95 shanqin bay (played)...this coore & crenshaw gem on the cliffs of hainan island in china is my favorite course in asia, there's nothing even remotely close in terms of greatness

#96 victoria (played)...very cool mackenzie design in melbourne's sand belt region, this clever australian course with spectacular bunkering starts with a downhill drivable par 4 with a million potential strategies

#97 machrihanish (played)...on a remote scottish isle sits arguably the greatest starting 1st hole in golf

#100 royal cinque ports (played)...the low key kinda scruffy english club got wild azz greens with tumultuous undulations

so right now schulzie is a 97 with 3 to go to complete the latest quest

what's your life adventure (and whose gonna accompany you on your journey)?#

the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world (and there's a lotta world to see)

with fall football camp just around the corner, now is a probably a good time to give you shocky's unvarnished opinions re: the 5 golf course architecture rankings programs...shocky played the above 3 new courses to him to complete the 2023 world top 100 list which required him to play point hardy (unwalkable routing, should not be in the world top 100, spectacular setting but basically the dumbed down cartball quivara of the carribean) under an assumed name on a high end luxury cruise in order to gain access

golf digest: the oldest rankings & the most well known rankings, requires panelists to be a 5 or less handicap when invited onto the panel...shocky wuz kicked off the panel a decade ago officially for serving on multiple ratings panels (which wuz apparently against the rules) but really because he publicly criticized the golf digest mathematical formula for rankings & stating that all panelists that play a majority of their rounds in golf carts should be removed from the panel...this resulted in the "schulzie rule" which remains today that all golf digest panelists cannot publicly comment on social media re: their architecture opinions

golf magazine: once the most respected rankings by purists when tom doak ran the panel, it's now fallen out of favor with the decline in magazine readership & well known "for sale" corruption of selling ranking slots including to the trump organization...the current panelists chief ran morrissett (a knowledgeable professioral type whose fun 1st wife dumped him for a gregarious pine valley member) monetizes ranking spots (most notably to the cabot organization) & sells panelist positions with the always hustling ferret faced steve lapper...full transparency: shocky wuz kicked off this panel a couple of years ago by ran after criticizing his ethics

golf week: 1800 mostly high handicappers that are passionate about golf course architecture, shocky wuz kicked off this panel a year ago by pointing out on the internal rater message board that this wuz basically just a commercial money making endeavor for the magazine with 1800 panelists paying 300 bucks a year ($540,000) to serve on the panel

top100golfcourses.com: this is the fastest growing rankings service for those under 60 years of age that don't subscribe to magazines but rather seek news/information from the internet...shocky serves on the executive international rankings panel as a courtesy to his golf buddy website owner david davis of amsterdam...very accurate rankings without the conflicts of interest of the 3 american magazines (all of which are experiencing steady declines in readership) with a much more global perspective...this is the only growth based buy stock among the 5 rankings services

planet golf: the most accurate world list compiled by a single source well traveled darius oliver of the mornington peninsula south of melbourne with input from his peer groups of global architecture critics such as shocky...the majority of members of g2c2 (global golf centurion club, for those of us that have completed at least 1 of the world top 100 lists) refer to this as the connoiseur's "golden list" when discussing the rankings among ourselves

^ good to know, always FUN too to take the quick tour of the public hearst castle when traveling cali's intergalactically beautiful central coast

https://instagr.am/p/CwtM0SeLx0S
real talk: the economics for newspapers & magazines are quite different than back in the day...if built today on money from a home delivery newspaper empire, hearst castle today would be a 2500+ square foot eichler in pismo beach

unlike cali's touristy areas like san diego's cluster**** crowded beaches or the car fumes from the los angeles beach scene, central cali is relatively tranquil with panoramic beauty & a lot of local tasty dining options for those with a sense of adventure!!

2025 california golden bears fall camp scheduling update:

the check in date for all players will be tuesday july 29th with fall camp practices starting later next week

will be very interesting to see the updated current weights for the entire offensive line room & also which former walk ons are now roster scholly players subject to the ncca maximum roster of 105 (college athletics including football will no longer have walk ons, all players on the roster will receive a scholly)

it's also possible there will be a player departure or two...

the following is a reprint from cal's monster class back in the day:

visited this morning the recently opened nicklaus design group ferry point golf course just outside of nyc with panoramic views of the manhattan skyline

https://instagr.am/p/C7dS0GksHlA
arrive from my upper east side central park hotel by cab at the clubhouse around 7:30 am to stretch & warm up at the practice facility

upon arrival the head golf professional tells me that ferry point's developer donald trump heard that as a golf digest & golf magazine rankings panelist that i had an 8:10 tee time and would i like to play with the donald at 8:20 am instead?

so i say sure, no big deal, let's do this

so we make the introductions on the practice green & the 1st thing i notice is that trump has the weirdest color hair ever (kinda yellow orange) & that he has total man boobs along with an oversized obnoxious red cap

i walk & carry my lightweight leather mackzenie bag while the donald drives a golf cart literally to within 6 inches of every green...just as annoyingly, we then proceed to play thru every group on the golf course in front of us (why does he do this, why not just take the 1st tee time?)...it's funny to watch people's reactions as he dictates the playing thru, some golfers are understandably agitated while others want a selfie with him on their phones, he very clearly enjoys all the drama he's created

so he tells us while we wait for the short par 4 8th green to clear that he thinks ferry point is one of the greatest golf courses in the united states (it isn't, there are at least a dozen courses on long island & the hamptons that are significantly better) & that he's qualified to make that statement because of his extensive travels around the globe playing golf, that nobody knows golf architecture better than him & that includes actual golf architects

so in front of his 2 buddies & his cart caddie i tell the donald that actually i'm one of the 13 guys (and the youngest) to have played the world top 100 courses & stare him down...total silence, one of his buddies who is the chairman of macys starts to laugh & donald play punches my shoulder kinda hard, he's been pwned...whatever

dude is an interesting guy but playing golf with him is not really a celebration of the game but more like riding a roller coaster

you're fired, shocky#

as a financial conservative (that believes in balanced fiscal budgets/discipline & the full funding of the police but that will never vote for election deniers) & social liberal (except transgender males tryna compete in women's sports & dei protections for failing employees) independent that strongly believes that all citizens of the united state of america should pick up litter & adopt rescue doggy dogs, shocky can tell u that after spending 5+ hours (golf & lunch) with donald trump that he lacks empathy for others & that he's non intellectually curious in a self agenda driven feral kinda way

trump is quite strong & athletic for his age with a large frame that generates clubhead speed even with a short non flexible backswing, shocky tole donald that he would benefit from a yoga/meditation practice to which he responded about something that's not gonna be repeated here that involved the body parts of female yoga teachers

OK Shocky:

Amazing you actually played golf with Trump, which you mentioned before.

It's no surprise he doesn't respect golf customs or ethics (e.g., walking to each hole -- which since I've never played golf, I never knew was a consideration until you mentioned it.)

I won't make this too political, but you know I'm a STEM grad from Cal, and you know Trump could never earn either of our Cal degrees.

great list. My adaptations fwiw is LA North after Hanse's artful renovation back to the original Thomas design, is the number 3 course. Just way too much golf architectural eye candy to be ignored. Better than Rivera, which I I grew up on, that was altered poorly by a famous golf course architect IMHO. By the way, LA North is a crappy spectator course from a tournament perspective.

Also, reflecting my SoCal biases, I would find a way to get Torrey Pines South on the public course ranking, and without dropping off funky Morro Bay, which.I love. Valley Club in SB makes my top 10 list. I also love Spyglass, but it is hard to take issue with your top 10 list, especially the top two (I have not played Brambles).

^ alex, would not strenuously disagree with flipping riv & lacc south (i go back & forth between these 2 george thomas designed gems)...agreed fazio as usual ****** up another classic course particularly the par 8th hole with his totally outta character domed green, would love to see a faithful restoration that restores the thomas character as recommended by riv's #1 steward geoff schackelford

fun fact: brambles gets the #10 slot in a coin flip with the terrific cal club in south san francisco

torrey pines south would not be cheap for berkeley students on a budget (which wuz one of the criteria for this affordable list) unless they are sd county residents with a local card but it's a beautiful place to spend a summer day despite lacking any truly short par 3s or par 4s & sometimes just feels like a really brawny long slog without a lotta subtlety

mackenzie's valley club is fabulous finishing on the uphill dogleg right par 4 18th green in front of the iconic clubhouse, not ranking it in the cali top 10 is probably a function of my last visit right after the club had suffered terrible water erosion/landslides with a couple of holes severely damaged...need to get back to montecito & then a tasty crab sandwich at brophy brothers on the wharf!!

perhaps the greatest wasted opportunity for a world class course in california is the sandpiper in santa barbara, if properly reimagined (tom doak got architectural plans pending environmental approvals) this could be a very special course...right now it's a hamburger helper design that does not tap into the site's tremendous upside/potential

2025 minnesota open (land of 10,000 lakes & the ginormous mall of america): 4th round update

max homa (69, tied for 39th): overall a very strong week with 4 rounds in the 60s!!...only mistakes ball striking wuz a couple of wipey cutty sark drives lost way right when homa doesn't stay on top of the ball but that's fixable

max got the game right now to win on the pga tour, really hoping that cal nation will walk with me in napa & root for our golden bear at silverado september 11th thru the 14th which will include the minnesota gophers big 10 invading memorial stadium with a logistically ideal 7:30 pm kickoff on saturday september 13th

yeah it would help max's scores with the occasional loose tee ball if caddie lance bennett would low key drop a golf ball in the light rough, got it??

fun fact: shocky beat donald in our match despite his loose compliance with the rules of golf at ferry point but oddly enough trump did NOT offer to pay up over lunch which honestly is kinda a character flaw in the monster's book...full transparency: shocky got comped the 250 dollars green fee by the head pro & donald did provide me a FREE lunch afterwards

Schocky - Have you played Mayacama? My friend played there last week and was raving about it. I haven't played some of your top 10 cali courses, but I'm a huge Spyglass fan - especially that first batch of holes in the sand dunes. I want to play Pasatiempo which I hear is great after the remodel.

hollywood, mayacama is a top 5 nicklaus design & wuz by far the best course in the wine country until brambles...it's got 5 par 5s & 5 pars 3s so the variety of holes is intriguing but at the end of the day like most of jack's architorture work it's just over the top difficult with the back tees only 6,758 yards but commanding a 74.1 course rating & an unreal 154 slope

once took my tiger moms to cama (we warmed up/conversed next to joe montana who can barely move his neck from all of his brutal nfl collisions, sad) & she lost a dozen balls with the lakes & ravines fronting a majority of the greensites in keeping with the nicklaus design company philosophy that golf should be played thru the air (which is almost impossible for 90% of all golfers on planet earth) vs the coore & crenshaw philosophy that golf should always offer the option of being played along the ground (which is FUN for golfers of all levels)

the club got walking caddies but the hike straight up a steep mountain from 12th green to the 13th tee no es bueno on a muy caliente summer day...shout out for the fantastic culinary meals at the club & also the on site super high luxe casitas hidden from the golf course near the beautiful tuscan clubhouse that overlooks the golden rolling nor cal hillsides

the problem with spyglass is the sequencing of holes, you play the spectacular dunes holes early & then the rest of the round is kinda anticlimactic thru the woods...golf architecture nerds such as myself will tell u that the routing/scorecard should be changed to playing holes 7 thru 9 (starting with a friendly handshake downhill par 5), then the back nine and then finishing with the fabulous sandy dunes hole 1 thru 6 with the 18th hole an epic brutal finale...but that's probably never gonna happen

both mayacama & spyglass would be in shocky's 2nd ten for cali & probably in the high teens

have functional football strength

is this **** fotoshopped (congrats dazmin)??#

If that's not AI we are freaking in business this year. Yes!

I want our players to have functional football strength... strength that will still be around in the 4th quarter. I want them to be able to stay on the field (and out of the training room) at least as much as the players on other P4 teams, if not more.

To the extent that the above goals are furthered by the progress as measured in these pics, hey, great. But in December, we will be impressed by increased wins, not in increased muscle size and definition, as shown in photos.

substance over style; steak over sizzle

big c, hear wut ur saying but football is a violent game usually won by well constructed apex predators

so bears putting in the work this summer & building up their bodies is not just some superficial non substantive photo op, it's an essential part of still being around in the 4th quarter & winning games late in the season both of which have not been hallmarks of wilcox coached teams

cal has had the worst blocking wide receiver unit in d1 football the last several years because the prior wr coach didn't demand physical blocking but also because the players in that room wuz undersized which also resulted in more than half the room injured throughout last season...none of those guys looked like bad azzs without their shirts on

hear wut ur saying but the weight updates of cal's offensive line next week relative to shocky's mandated 315+ lbs for all guys in the starting line up & playing rotation will be a strong early indicator to the monster re: whether or not this is gonna be a 8+ win team this fall or another candy azz soft mediocre ****show that can't impose their will at the offensive line of scrimmage

yeah sometimes guys gotta work out even when they really don't wanna ******* work out, got it??

napa valley, agreed that the lack of before & after fotos of shirtless o-linemen is kinda concerning but let's see how the updated weight #s turn out next week, ok?

and yeah leidy is not gonna be weighing 315+ lbs this fall or something no matter how many state street pizza slices (shocky's favorite pizza on planet earth!!) or soft drinks she downs

econ, trevor rogers fom caldecott tunnel high school (and a long lineage of berkeley grads that bleed blue & gold and not orange) is not only track SPEED fast as **** but now he's now also built like a bad azz that can violently block on the edges thereby creating gaps in the running game while still remarkably looking kinda like a much higher gpa version of carrot top!!

somewhere on planet earth there's a curvy brunette yoga female from an academically mediocre school that will someday think 3.5 gpa trevor's carrot top hair is attractive or something...

cal's monster class book recommendation:

nightshade by michael connelly is set on catalina island off the cali coast, nobody captures the essence of life in california better than this generational talent author who makes u never wanna say goodbye to his protagonists in his absorbing novels!!

and yeah the love interest is the poly curvy brunette yoga female tash who is the 2nd in charge dock master *and shocky imagines she wears a ponytail to work which she constantly reties in a triggering kinda way!!
